C O N S O L I D A T I O N 1897 – 1917 Consolidation Era (1897 – 1917) he few years before the turn of the twentieth century, and the first 10 years of the new century, saw Manitoba’s brick-making industry attain Tnew heights of production and operational sophistication. It was during these years that the largest and most technologically advanced operations in the history of the industry were attained (except for the very late entry of Lockport’s Red River Brick and Tile into the fraternity in 1971). And production was phenomenal. The first few years of this period were defined by two interconnected developments. The first was the inauguration of two new railway lines in Manitoba: the Canadian Northern (CNo, begun in 1896 in Manitoba and greatly expanded north and west through 1897 and 1899), and the Grand Trunk Pacific (begun in 1903 with construction to the west, via a more northerly route, beginning in 1905). Both of these new transcontinental lines brought even more opportunity for growth and development to Western Canada, and CNo was instrumental in opening the Parkland and Interlake regions of Manitoba to agricultural settlement, and thus a whole new market for southern brick-makers. The other development concerned immigration. With the success of Wilfred Laurier’s Liberals in the election of 1896, a new Manitoba Member of Parliament, Clifford Sifton (representing Brandon North) was appointed Minister of the Interior, and he quickly inaugurated a major new immigration policy. Seeking to populate the west with capable farmers, he had immigration agents reach out to Americans, people from Scotland and the North of England, and Eastern and Central Europe. -

P a g e | 1 RIVERDALE MUNICIPALITY BY-LAW NO. 2019-09 ____________________________________________________ BEING A BY-LAW OF RIVERDALE MUNICIPALITY TO PROVIDE FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF PROPERTY WITHIN THE URBAN CENTRES OF THE MUNICIPALITY, INCLUDING RIVERS, CHIMO, WHEATLAND, BRADWARDINE, PARADISE VALLEY & ASPEN ROAD DEVELOPMENT __________________________________________________________ WHEREAS, The Municipal Act provides, in part, as follows: 232(1) A Council may pass by-laws for municipal purposes respecting the following matters… a) the safety, health, protection and well-being of people, and the safety and protection of property; c) subject to section 233, activities or things in or on private property; o) the enforcement of by-laws 232(2) Without limiting the generality of subsection (1), a council may in a by-law passed under this division… (a) regulate or prohibit; (d) establish fees or other charges for services, activities or things provided or done by the municipality or for the use of property under the ownership, direction, management or control of the municipality… 233 A by-law under clause 231(1)( c) (activities or things in or on private property) may contain provisions only in respect of a) the requirement that land and improvements be kept and maintained in a safe and clean condition; b) the parking and storing of vehicles, including the number and type of vehicles that may be kept or stored and the manner of parking and storing; c) the removal of top soil; and d) activities or things that in the opinion of the council are or could become a nuisance, which may include noise, weeds, odours, unsightly property, fumes or vibrations. -

WESTMAN COMMUNICATIONS GROUP BRINGING NEW COMMUNICATION CHOICES TO GILBERT PLAINS AND GRANDVIEW GILBERT PLAINS & GRANDVIEW MB; May 1, 2018 – Westman Communications Group is pleased to announce that it is making a $1.2 million investment to upgrade its network facilities in Gilbert Plains and Grandview in August 2018. This upgrade will give residents and businesses access to Westman’s high speed Internet options, enhanced video services, and for the first time, they will have a choice for phone services. The local community councils have voiced their support of Westman bringing services to the towns. “The residents of the Gilbert Plains Municipality are very excited and looking forward to a new choice for internet and home phone services,” said Blake Price, the Reeve of Gilbert Plains.
