BOLIVAR Simon Bolivar was one of the great figures of the 19th century, who liberated much of South America from Spanish rule. The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba – the earliest known form of a Habano. The brand was created in 1966 for the president Fidel Castro and since 1982 has been available in limited quantities to the public. The word Cuaba, as per Cohiba, is dated back to Columbus times; it was the name for a highly combustible bush used to light the “Cohibas”. The 1970’s saw a tremendous success for the brand, as cigar shops opened to the public all over the world selling an exceptional range of premium cigars rolled at the “Laguito” factory. All Davidoff cigars produced in Cuba were discontinued in 1991 and the brand then started to produce cigars in the Dominican Republic. In 2013 the “Nicaragua” series were released incorporating Nicaraguan tobacco into the blend. ROMEO Y JULIETA Named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers, the origin of Romeo y Julieta as Habanos state back to 1875. Winston Churchill became the devotee of the brand and following his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has not only been commemorated on a band, but it has also served to describe the marque's most famous size - Romeo y Julieta Churchill.
