GM Bulletin No.: 14659 Date: October 2014 Service Bulletin SERVICE UPDATE SUBJECT: Service Update for Inventory Vehicles Only Quality Audit for Flex Plate Ring Gear Teeth Chipping / Breaking Starter Motor Grinding Noise – Vehicle No Start Expires October 31, 2015 MODELS: 2015 Chevrolet Impala (VIN 1) 2015 Chevrolet Malibu Equipped with 2.5L Engine (LKW) This service update includes vehicles in dealer inventory only and will expire October 31, 2015. PURPOSE This bulletin provides a service procedure to perform a quality audit on certain 2015 model year Chevrolet Impala and Chevrolet Malibu vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine (LKW). Some of these vehicles may break or chip teeth on the flex plate ring gear, leading to a grinding noise during starter motor engagement, or a no start condition. The quality audit must be completed before vehicle delivery (and in addition to normal pre-delivery inspection activities) to identify vehicles with the condition. If the condition is found, dealers are to replace the automatic transmission flex plate. This service procedure should be completed on involved vehicles currently in dealership inventory as soon as possible but no later than October 31th, 2015, at which time this bulletin will expire. VEHICLES INVOLVED All involved vehicles are identified by VIN in the Global Warranty Management System – Investigate Vehicle History Application. Dealership technicians should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content. Additionally, a list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the “Service Update Bulletin Information” link under the “Service” tab in GM GlobalConnect (US) or attached to the GlobalConnect message (Canada) used to release this bulletin. Part Number Description Quantity/Vehicle 12664939 Automatic Transmission Flex Plate 1 SERVICE PROCEDURE Caution: Carefully listen and observe for the following conditions during the quality audit: A grinding sound or unusual noise from the starter motor. A “free-spinning” of the starter motor without the engine turning over. This procedure specifies 1 minute wait intervals between cranking events. It is very important to wait 1 minute between cranking events in order to avoid overheating the starter motor. Install the EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool to maintain system voltage. If not available, or procedure is performed in the lot, connect a fully charged 12 V jumper or booster pack. If no type of battery maintaining tool is available, let the vehicle run for a minimum of 5 minutes at the end of this procedure. If at any point during the procedure you hear an abnormal starting noise as described above, stop and consider this vehicle to have a broken flex plate. Quality Audit 1. Push and hold the accelerator pedal with your right foot all the way to the floor, and if equipped with push button start additionally hold the brake pedal with your left foot all the way to the floor. 2. With the accelerator pedal pushed all the way to the floor, turn the key to start and release key, or push the start button and release. 3. Engine should crank for 4 seconds and then stop without starting. Notice: If the accelerator pedal is inadvertently not pushed all the way down the vehicle will start. If this occurs, wait one minute and repeat that cranking event. It is not required to begin the whole procedure from the start. Page 3 October 2014 Bulletin No.: 14659 1. Turn the ignition off then release the accelerator pedal (and brake pedal if equipped with push button start), and wait 60 seconds. 2. Repeat 19 times for a total of 20 (being sure to wait 1 minute between cranking events) If at any point you hear an unusual starting noise stop the procedure and consider this vehicle to have a broken flex plate. See broken flex plate replacement below. 3. Perform a “normal” vehicle start after successfully passing 20 cranking events. If no unusual noise was heard, the vehicle passes and no further action is required. 4. If a battery maintaining tool was not used let the vehicle continue to run for a minimum of 5 minutes. Turn the ignition off. Broken Flex Plate Note: While performing the Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Replacement procedure, inspect the starter motor drive gear to assure that no damage has occurred. 1. Refer to Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Replacement in the Service Information for complete repair instructions. WARRANTY TRANSACTION INFORMATION Submit a transaction using the table below.
