Designed for pre and post treating textiles for printing with pigment inks, the TR300’s small footprint and on-demand operational benefits appealed to company director, Lawrence Chapman as he strived to optimise the performance of Countryside Art’s cotton printing. With customers ranging from schools and charities to globally renown retail clients and visitor attractions, Countryside Art’s portfolio of UK made products holds universal appeal. “We’re able to offer small minimum runs, short lead times, competitive pricing and superb quality,” states Lawrence, as he discusses the company’s range of tea towels, cushion covers, tote bags and aprons; all printed on a bank of Mimaki Tx300-1800 textile inkjet printers. “We work with clients to turn their design ideas into reality across a multitude of products that represent our core ethos of delivering high quality, bespoke giftware with an expert, personal approach.” Simple to use, the TR300 roll-to-roll unit applies a coating to the fabric to improve print results, and once inserted into the coater, the fabric passes through a padder, where it is saturated with the necessary chemicals before passing through squeeze rollers and a dryer, and finally being rewound onto a roll. Countryside Art invested in the TR300 through authorised Mimaki partner, RA Smart (CAD & Machinery) and the company’s Magnus Mighall is confident of the opportunities the new machine presents. “The versatility of the Mimaki coating a pre-prepared fabric offers. “We are now able to coat textiles as and when machine means Countryside Art can offer their customers the opportunity to we need them,” Lawrence describes, “The ability to enhance our colour yield use specific fabrics, which up until this point would not have been cost effective has made a significant difference to colour matching, which for our corporate to coat using an external supplier.” customers is especially critical,” he continues. “From a technical perspective, it’s also possible to enhance the finished Countryside Art sports substantial direct to textile printing capabilities, product with a range of treatments, be it pre or post print – aiding the wash and thanks to its five Mimaki TX300-1800 wide format printers, running Mimaki rub fastness and even adding fire retardant or waterproof coatings,” Magnusl water based pigment inks and printing direct to a variety of cotton base continues. “We’re proud to have Countryside Art as a long standing customer, cloths, all woven specially for the company to ensure the highest quality and with their first investment in a Mimaki textile printer some five years ago, and we an ethical and sustainable supply chain. The product was purchased and installed by Morgana Systems, the UK exclusive distributor for Valiani products. Commenting on the purchase, Nick Murray, Managing Director of Wellington Press, said: “We are now regularly handling thicker substrates. The Optima 160 can cut up to 20mm, and we can now work on materials up to 1,600mm x 1,230mm. It also allows us to produce work faster thanks largely to the twin head tool station. That means, for example, that we can cut and crease at the same time.” The Valiani Optima 160 replaces an existing Valiani Matt Pro Ultra V150 at Wellington Press. “The V150 was a great product, and has served us well, but, as demand has grown, the time was right for us to move to a more capable and more productive machine,” added Nick. “Morgana kept in touch with us after the initial purchase. We were able to update them on our progress with that unit, and when the more robust Optima unit became available to them, they talked to us about the benefits the change might offer us. We were looking for faster production and the ability to cut thicker boards, and that is what the more robust Optima can provide.” The Valiani Optima series of flatbed cutting tables offer extreme versatility. The Optima 160 machine is a vacuum flatbed die-cutting unit that is able to cut a wide range of materials up to 20mm (3/4″) thick, on a bed measuring 1,600 x 1,230mm. The unit is ideal for in-house prototyping, point of sale displays, or short to medium runs of packaging boxes – which can even incorporate high levels of personalisation. Valiani Optima units provide the user with reliability and flexibility, and are simple and intuitive to operate. The Optima series incorporates refined cutting technology that can satisfy the most demanding of users. The 160 offers a vacuum table for holding the media in place, a twin headed tool station, and interchangeable accessories for cutting, half-cutting and creasing, drawing and oscillating, and perforating a wide range of media. either for prototype or small production runs; banner products; point of sales The Optima comes as standard with a camera for crop mark detection. QPP September 2021.indd 13 20/08/2021 17:01 PIXEL PROPHET

PIXEL PROPHET SEEKING SERENDIPITY Serendipity is not a word used very often, and it’s a concept rarely enjoyed in these days of internet trawling and online information gathering and purchase. It’s the process of discovering something by accident that you never really knew you wanted but will be found to be pleasant or useful, or both. It’s a condition more common in the days of window shopping when the high street was packed with more variety and choice, rather than the same chain outlets and cheap cut price disposable dross. But, as Martin Christie suggests, maybe it was a time when browsing the town was more of an adventure than a disappointment.

e can’t turn back the digital clock but the relentless rush to move everything we need on web-based shelves W rather than real ones has a self- perpetuating result that shoppers have less immediate choice and variance. Having the world at your fingertips is just an illusion if you can’t actually touch it. The global pandemic has, of course, significantly accelerated the migration to the cloud. Still, there’s a certain irony to the fact that in aid of recovery, people are now being encouraged to shop locally when so many of the shelves have already been cleared of stock and options are limited. Perhaps a realisation that lots of short journeys for the person rather than lots of long ones for goods and lorries might actually be better for the environment will sink in and reverse the situation. But much of that resource, along with many household names, has already been lost forever, or so it seems. I fear it will take more than a few words in this obscure column to turn around the juggernaut that is ‘popular demand for convenience’ as many pundits like to term it. Still, hopefully, the proverbial penny (and not a bitcoin) will begin to drop. The business plan of not keeping anything in stock and only ordering when you need Ships have got a little bigger since the Suez canal was built in 1869 it was thought up by the accountants, those bean counters who believed “just in time” was Columbus, who set out to find a route to China acres of vegetation. a sustainable way to run an economy. Because it is open-source, it is also a minefield of deadly traps that may well blow up in your face if you don’t tread cautiously. Increasingly it is the domain of those who want to direct you where they want you to go. The perception that the internet is free for everyone is, of course, another illusion. We all pay for it in various ways, connection charges, or allowing our personal information and preferences to be collected and used for marketing purposes. Then there are those who pay a lot more to have their name and services promoted to the top of the search engines regardless of any qualitative scrutiny or vetting. So customers comparing your prices online may be looking at a product that doesn’t begin to compare on quality even it appears to do on price. For example, unless you can actually see it and touch it, how can you compare chalk and cheese, which actually looks the same in texture online? As we know, if we have a customer at the counter and can talk them through what they actually want and what they want to spend, then we can direct them to the best option for both of us. Trying to converse by email is a mechanical, metronome-like conversation that has so many potential flaws. It is virtually useless with anything more than basic information. That’s also why working from home was never going to inevitable bugs are likely to be sought out and imperious nature of this decision that has really work in the long term, and for most proper jobs. fixed before it is more widely used. QPP September 2021.indd 29 20/08/2021 17:02 NEW PROFIT CENTRE ACA AND TASKFORCE SIGN TRADE SERVICE laminating, coating and varnishing, embossing and debossing and wire binding. However, it makes sense for us to use Taskforce for the stitching and binding work. We are just 60 miles apart and, with our own fleet of vehicles, we can collect or deliver quickly and speedily.” Alex Porteous, managing director of Taskforce, says: “We heard that ACA were selling a binding line and so it made sense to talk. In fact we had recently bought a 12 station Muller Martini Pantera which has quick set up, is compact and can change easily from hot melt to PUR. The surprise for us and ACA is that we haven’t talked before this; it’s a very good fit.” Both companies remain entirely financially independent and are finding trade bouncing back after the Covid lockdowns. There is no transfer of equipment or thought of a buyout. ACA was founded in the 1980s but it was only five years ago that it was the subject of a £6.5m management buyout, backed by Royal Bank of Scotland. This has brought new vision and an emphasis on investment in equipment, people and service. Bridging the Glasgow Edinburgh divide, two trade finishers have signed Taskforce was set up in 1990 with three staff when it discovered a gap in trade a joint venture that will enhance business for both. SIGN UP SYSTEMS INVEST IN GENESIS V CUTTER Nottingham based Sign Up Systems has invested in a Blackman & White Genesis V flatbed digital cutting system from i-Sub as it looks to speed up its finishing process, diversify its work and produce new products. The company, which started out providing aluminium systems for the signage and graphics industry, first diversified into print in 2016 when it invested in a dye-sublimation machine and a 3.2m UV roll to roll system. A few years later it installed further large format printing equipment; a move which opened up a host of potential new avenues, but also left the company needing to upgrade its finishing options. “Finishing was definitely the bottleneck in our business,” explains Sign Up Systems’ Managing Director Jon Bromhead. “We could print a lot of work; we just couldn’t finish it. We realised that what we needed was that missing link — and, as it turned out, that was the Blackman & White Genesis V cutter.” Jon Bromhead and his team were initially in the market for a used cutting machine, but quickly realised that only a new one would meet their needs.
