The document is the culmination of work done over two years by RS&H, an engineering firm specializing in aviation services, with input from the public and a committee of community stakeholders. The 20-year plan anticipates current and future needs at the airport in order to identify the best use of resources for the growth of general and commercial aviation services as well as associated industrial properties. Runway extensions and additional taxiways were also featured in the Master Plan. Additional growth space was designated for current and potential new tenants in aviation-related businesses that require runway access. Included in the detailed document are suggested enlargements of the passenger terminal and parking areas of the airport. An expanded security feature, which would be required if larger-capacity aircraft are used in the future for passenger service, is indicated in the plan. A strong tourism economy and higher utilization of the airport by local residents gave these issues a high priority status in the plan, according to Glynn County Airport Commission Executive Director Robert Burr. “We have been fortunate to show a steady increase in ridership at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport,” noted Burr. “One of our most valuable features to travelers is our free parking, and as our numbers grow, we want to make sure we continue to offer the best passenger experience available.” “The Master Plan provides a framework for the airport to accommodate future growth, but it does not limit our options,” added Burr. “It gives us a carefully researched map to follow to continue to be a benefit our community.” To view a copy of the Master Plan, visit: http://flygcairports.com/projects.html BQK Welcomes Endeavor Airlines Delta Air Lines has replaced their Regional Airline serving the Brunswick Golden Isles Airports with Endeavor Air. Continuing to operate the 50 seat jet service into Atlanta, Endeavor is wholly owned by Delta Air Lines and is committed to enhancing the support for this service by establishing an Atlanta crew base and maintenance facility. “We have been pleased with Express Jet Service and we are even more delighted with Delta’s decision to move to a company with even greater local support services,” Robert Burr stated. New TSA Equipment at BQK If that forgotten key ring in your pocket sets off an alert when going through TSA screening at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, you can forego a whole body pat-down, thanks to new AIT, or Advanced Image Technology equipment. The new device was designed to provide improved efficiency and customer service at the checkpoint. Unlike past equipment that created a detailed body image, the AIT system provides a generic outline of the human form and shows a rectangular shape over the part of the body that generated the concern. This allows the TSA agent to concentrate on a specific area rather than starting with a search of the entire body. In the past, if a passenger set off the alarm when going through the metal detector, the more intrusive procedure was required. Passengers will still have the ability to opt out of walking through the new machine and undergo the pat-down if they choose. “The new equipment has been well received by the passengers,” noted Robert Burr. “They report that it is less intrusive and easier to go through the screening process.” Pilots’ Progress Congratulations to these pilots who have achieved their licenses and advanced their ratings at McKinnon St Simons Island Airport. NAS Glynco was located on the property of the current day Brunswick Golden Isles Airport and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. In the 1950s, the base added two training commands that prepared crews for numerous aviation operations. Among the aircraft used in the base’s training mission was the McDonnell F2H Banshee fighter, seen here at NAS Glynco in the mid-1950s. This multi-purpose carrier-based plane could be used as a day fighter, a night fighter or a photoreconnaissance aircraft. The Banshee became one principal fighters used by the Navy’s Seventh Fleet in the Korean War. The plane had twice the power of its predecessor, the FH-1 Phantom, which was also used at NAS Glynco. The Banshee gave the U.S. troops a formidable advantage with its ability to carry bombs, rockets and cannons. The Banshee was capable of extended missions of up to 1,200 miles, thanks to the 200-gallon wing tip fuel tanks. The plane offered several new design features, including an ejection seat, a pressurized and air-conditioned cockpit and a canopy made of bulletproof glass with electric heat that could prevent frost. The F2H Banshee was the aircraft flown by the characters in the James Michener novel, The Bridges of Toko-Ri, which was later made into a movie starring Grace Kelly and William Holden.     Military Bio of the Honorable T. Jackson Bedford Jr. Judge, Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia Born April 18, 1944 during World War II, Judge Bedford was almost two years old before his father, a Navy Veteran of the Pacific War, ever saw him. Judge Bedford grew up a “Navy Brat” with his family following his father during a 24 year career as a Naval Officer, which also included service in Korea during the Korean War. After graduating from high school in Oklahoma City, Judge Bedford attended the University of Virginia in 1962 on a Naval ROTC Scholarship. While a student at the University of Virginia, he was a Company and Battalion Officer in the NROTC Battalion and in his 4th year received recognition by being awarded the General Dynamics Outstanding Midshipman Award. Upon graduating from the University in June 1966, Judge Bedford was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and received orders to Naval Pre-Flight School in Pensacola where he also attended 1 | Page Basic Naval Aviation Officers Training School. After completion of his basic Naval Aviation training he received orders to the Advanced Naval Flight Officer Training School at Naval Air Station Glynco, Brunswick, Georgia. In March 1967 Judge Bedford was awarded his “Wings of Gold” as a newly minted Naval Flight Officer (NFO) with specialty training as an Electronic Warfare Officer. Thereafter, he was ordered to VAQ33, a fixed wing Electronic Warfare Squadron stationed at Quanset Point, Rhode Island. As a member of this squadron, Judge Bedford flew in a large single engine plane known as the EA1F, affectionately nicknamed the “Fat Spad.” In fact, it was the last single engine propeller driven plane flown in combat by the U.S.

Fortunately, the reason was not a dangerous forest fire, but the Georgia Public Safety Aviators Conference. The training event, based at Manning Aviation, the airport’s Fixed Base Operator (FBO), was designed to teach Georgia Forestry Commission pilots and cooperating agencies valuable skills in interagency communication, firefighting techniques, search and rescue/recovery, and resource management.

The exercise was part of certification required by the Federal Aviation Administration, therefore airport officials reached out to invite other organizations to benefit from cross training and shared information. “Exercising our plan gives us a better understanding of how to improve our performance in a real emergency,” noted Vernon Bessing, Brunswick Golden Isles Airport Operations and Facilities Manager “Everyone benefits from the experience and we all come away with new ideas.” The exercise involved fire fighting, rescue and recovery, communications and security operations. Participating agencies included the Glynn County Airport Commission, ExpressJet, Glynn County Government, Glynn County Emergency Management Agency, Glynn County Fire Department, Glynn County Police Department, Defensive Aspects Group, Glynn County Coroner, Southeast Georgia Health System, American Red Cross and The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

Washington, DC AIR SAFETYS FORUM BIOGRAPHIES Dr. Kathy Abbott Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor, Flight Deck Human Factors, Federal Aviation Administration Dr. Kathy Abbott has over 30 years of experience specializing in aviation human factors. She currently serves as the chief scientific and technical advisor for Flight Deck Human Factors to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on human performance and human error, systems design and analysis, advanced automation for flight path management, flight crew training/qualification, and flight crew operations and procedures. She is FAA liaison to industry and other government and international agencies dealing with flight deck human factors. Since 1996, Dr. Abbott has led the integration of human factors engineering into development and application of FAA/international regulatory material and policies for flight guidance systems, avionics, all-weather operations, Required Navigation Performance, flight crew qualification, data link, instrument procedure design criteria, electronic flight bags, electronic displays, design-related flight crew error, and other areas. Dr. Abbott also is vice chair of the Flight Safety Foundation Icarus Committee. Before joining the FAA, she conducted research on flight deck design and operations at the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. She is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (since 2001) and a Liveryman of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators (GAPAN) (Freeman since 2005 and elected to the Livery in 2008). Among other honors, she has received the 2005 GAPAN Cumberbach Trophy for contributions to aviation safety and the 2002 Aerospace Laurel from Aviation Week and Space Technology.
