The Master Plan for Brunswick Golden Isles Airport (BQK) is in its final stages, and was presented in a public meeting on August 17. The document is the culmination of work done over two years by RS&H, an engineering firm specializing in aviation services, with input from the public and a committee of community stakeholders. The 20-year plan anticipates current and future needs at the airport in order to identify the best use of resources for the growth of general and commercial aviation services as well as associated industrial properties. Runway extensions and additional taxiways were also featured in the Master Plan. Additional growth space was designated for current and potential new tenants in aviation-related businesses that require runway access. Included in the detailed document are suggested enlargements of the passenger terminal and parking areas of the airport. An expanded security feature, which would be required if larger-capacity aircraft are used in the future for passenger service, is indicated in the plan. A strong tourism economy and higher utilization of the airport by local residents gave these issues a high priority status in the plan, according to Glynn County Airport Commission Executive Director Robert Burr. “We have been fortunate to show a steady increase in ridership at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport,” noted Burr. “One of our most valuable features to travelers is our free parking, and as our numbers grow, we want to make sure we continue to offer the best passenger experience available.” “The Master Plan provides a framework for the airport to accommodate future growth, but it does not limit our options,” added Burr. “It gives us a carefully researched map to follow to continue to be a benefit our community.” To view a copy of the Master Plan, visit: http://flygcairports.com/projects.html

BQK Welcomes Endeavor Airlines has replaced their Regional Airline serving the Brunswick Golden Isles with Endeavor Air. Continuing to operate the 50 seat jet service into Atlanta, Endeavor is wholly owned by Delta Air Lines and is committed to enhancing the support for this service by establishing an Atlanta crew base and maintenance facility. “We have been pleased with Express Jet Service and we are even more delighted with Delta’s decision to move to a company with even greater local support services,” Robert Burr stated.

New TSA Equipment at BQK If that forgotten key ring in your pocket sets off an alert when going through TSA screening at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, you can forego a whole body pat-down, thanks to new AIT, or Advanced Image Technology equipment. The new device was designed to provide improved efficiency and customer service at the checkpoint. Unlike past equipment that created a detailed body image, the AIT system provides a generic outline of the human form and shows a rectangular shape over the part of the body that generated the concern. This allows the TSA agent to concentrate on a specific area rather than starting with a search of the entire body. In the past, if a passenger set off the alarm when going through the metal detector, the more intrusive procedure was required. Passengers will still have the ability to opt out of walking through the new machine and undergo the pat-down if they choose. “The new equipment has been well received by the passengers,” noted Robert Burr. “They report that it is less intrusive and easier to go through the screening process.”

From the Archives: Bad-to-the-Bone Banshee

Brunswick’s Glynco was originally established as an airship (blimp) base to provide convoy escort for merchant marine vessels in World War II. NAS Glynco was located on the property of the current day Brunswick Golden Isles Airport and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. In the 1950s, the base added two training commands that prepared crews for numerous aviation operations. Among the aircraft used in the base’s training mission was the McDonnell F2H Banshee fighter, seen here at NAS Glynco in the mid-1950s. This multi-purpose carrier-based plane could be used as a day fighter, a night fighter or a photoreconnaissance aircraft. The Banshee became one principal fighters used by the Navy’s Seventh Fleet in the Korean War. The plane had twice the power of its predecessor, the FH-1 Phantom, which was also used at NAS Glynco. The Banshee gave the U.S. troops a formidable advantage with its ability to carry bombs, rockets and cannons. The Banshee was capable of extended missions of up to 1,200 miles, thanks to the 200-gallon wing tip fuel tanks. The plane offered several new design features, including an ejection seat, a pressurized and air-conditioned cockpit and a canopy made of bulletproof glass with electric heat that could prevent frost. The F2H Banshee was the aircraft flown by the characters in the James Michener novel, The Bridges of Toko-Ri, which was later made into a movie starring Grace Kelly and William Holden.
