The Hutt and Pakuratahi rivers are also key features of the park along with their riverside flats which are popular for camping and picnicking. The lower hills of the park are covered in native podocarp and beech forest and offer a range of short walks and more challenging tramps. Native birds including kereru, fantails, grey warblers, tūi, bellbirds and rifleman are common and freshwater fish species include bullies, koaro and freshwater crayfish.
