ICTM Study Group on Musics of 24 June 1988 Circular No. 13

1988 Study Group Meeting at :

We are hoping for a fine turn-out for the first meeting ever of our Study Group at Deakin University in , , 3-6 September. All members of this Study Group are invited to attend (no personal letter of invitation is needed--the offer of one, in Circular No. 10 in September 1987, was simply to assist any member who might find one helpful for an application for a travel grant from his/her institution or a foundation). I am confident that this meeting will be a memorable event!

For any of you who plan to attend but have not yet notified Florian Messner, please do so at your earliest convenience. Additional information about local arrangements is in the mail from Australia--you should receive it at about the same time as you receive this Circular which is being sent from Hawaii. Florian needs to know as soon as possible how many members will attend so he can proceed with local arrangements (it is especially important that any member who wishes to stay with a family notify him as soon as possible).

Other Events Concerned with Musics of Oceania:

SIMS-88 in : the sessions on Intercultural contact through music and dance since 1960 in Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia are tentatively scheduled for Thursday 1 September. Waigani Seminar: according to the latest information I have received, the schedule of events within it is not yet fixed.

News of Members:

(I have received only a small amount of news from members since sending Circular No. 12. Because much correspondence in relation to the events in Australia this summer concerned tentative plans, I will not include that here to avoid disseminating information that by now may be incorrect.)

Chenoweth hopes to complete work in the Fallon the first volume of a long term project on music of Papua New Guinea.

Lamasisi is currently in Vienna completing work on a doctorate.

Lawson is currently in the Marshall Islands conducting the Territorial Survey of Oceanic Musics for that region.

Nero has completed the Ph.D in Anthropology at liC-Berkeley. Congratulations, Dr. Nero! She has been appointed Director of the Program in Micronesian Field Studies at UC-Irvine. Although not focussed primarily on music, this program can now be expected to yield information of significance to our interests.

Publication by Member:

The 1986 Supplement of Commercial Recordings of Papua New Guinea Music, compiled by Don Niles, has been published and work is on-going for further supplements. New Member:

We are happy to welcome one new member . Please add the name and address to the list of members distributed in March 1987 . Relen REEVES

Change of address (after 1 September 1988) : Karen NERO

Death: Kim Bailey, a member of our Study Group since Fall 1987 , died 11 April 1988 in Guam . Her study of the traditional music of Ponape in the 1970s and more recently of Chamor ro music in the Mariana Islands and Guam are important contributions to knowledge of Micronesian musics.
