Buhlmann (SREL), and Jeff Camper (Francis Marion University) DESCRIPTION Taxonomy and Basic Descriptions This guild contains 4 primary species: the flatwoods salamander, Carolina gopher frog, dwarf siren, and tiger salamander; and 2 secondary species: upland chorus frog and northern cricket frog. Primary species are high priority species that are directly tied to a unifying feature or habitat. Secondary species are priority species that may occur in, or be related to, the unifying feature at some time in their life. The flatwoods salamander—in particular, the frosted flatwoods salamander— and tiger salamander are members of the family Ambystomatidae, the mole salamanders. Both species are large; the tiger salamander is the largest terrestrial salamander in the eastern United States. The Photo by SC DNR flatwoods salamander can reach lengths of 9 to 12 cm (3.5 to 4.7 in.) as an adult. This species is dark, ranging from black to dark brown with silver-white reticulated markings (Conant and Collins 1991; Martof et al. 1980). The tiger salamander can reach lengths of 18 to 20 cm (7.1 to 7.9 in.) as an adult; maximum size is approximately 30 cm (11.8 in.). -

New Hawaiian Pest Plant Records for 1995 PATRICK CONANT (Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture, Plant Pest Control Branch, 1428 S King St, Honolulu, HI 96814) Fabaceae Ulex europaeus L. New island record On 6 October 1995, Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife employee C. Joao submitted an unusual plant he found while work- ing in the Molokai Forest Reserve. The plant was identified as U. europaeus and con- firmed by a Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) nox-A survey of the site on 9 October revealed an infestation of ca. 19 m2 at about 457 m elevation in the Kamiloa Distr., ca. 6.2 km above Kamehameha Highway. Distribution in Wagner et al. (1990, Manual of the flowering plants of Hawai‘i, p. 716) listed as Maui and Hawaii. Material examined: MOLOKAI: Molokai Forest Reserve, 4 Dec 1995, Guy Nagai s.n. OVS Outdoor Education 2019/2020 Trip Offerings September: ● Surf overnight September 13th - 14th base camping at Refugio or Emma Wood State Park, and working on water skills. Surf / Sup / Bodyboarding. Fun in the water. ● Stargazing / Hiking Mt. Pinos - September 21-23 Students will join Mr. Sittig to explore and geocache among Ventura county’s highest elevations by day and explore the sky at night. This trip will be a great opportunity for exploration of some great trails through the pine-forested peaks close to home. ● Rock Climbing in the Sespe - September 22-23 Students will base camp at Wheeler Gorge campground and spend the first day climbing in Wheeler Gorge. Day 2 we’ll venture up into the sespe to give it a go on the classic trad route of Sespe Wall. October: ● Sierras Backpacking Trip - October 8-10th Students will head into the Domeland or Golden Trout Wilderness for 4 days on the trail at altitude in the Sierras. High mountain lakes and running streams will contrast with some the Sierras taller peaks as backdrops. ● Yosemite National Park Basecamp exploration October 20-23 spuds are headed back to the valley to explore the trails in and around yosemite valley. Base camp will be in the valley floor with on night of backcountry camping. ● Pine Mountain Weekend Excursion Bouldering / hiking / stargazing TBD November ● Backpacking Santa Rosa Island November 1-3 * [additional cost to student for boat ticket] On this trip, students will visit the more remote Santa Rosa Island, and participate in beach exploration and hiking through some magnificent landscapes, including the legendary Torrey Pine forest and the stunning Lobo Canyon ● Rock Climbing in the Eastern Sierras - Alabama Hills November 8-10th This is a Sport and trad climbing mecca. -

Field observations indicated that Liriomyza trifolii (Burg), Agromyzidae infested cantaloupe leaves in moderate populations, while Melanogromyza cuntans (Meign) infested leaves in low populations. The present study revealed that the parasite Tachina larvarum L. (Tachinidae) and the predator Syrphus corolla F. -

We sought to quantify relative effects of land cover at two different but Anaxyrus californicus interacting scales on habitat suitability for the endangered arroyo toad (Anaxyrus californicus). Based on an Anthropogenic development ff Riparian areas existing distribution model for the arroyo toad and available land cover data, we estimated e ects of land cover along streams and within entire watersheds on habitat suitability using structural equation modeling. -

The species was discovered in 1996 and was determined to occupy 26.7 km of the San Antonio River from approximately 2.4 km northwest of the San Antonio Mission de Padua, to the river delta above the San Antonio Reservoir. The construction of the San Antonio Reservoir dam in 1963 isolated this northern population of arroyo toads. Through time, the Fort Hunter Liggett landscape has changed drastically. The land was heavily grazed by cattle until 1991, which considerably reduced vegetation in riparian areas. Military training following acquisition of the land in 1940 far exceeded current allowable training. Fire was used extensively to reduce unfavorable vegetation, and as a result, extreme tree loss occurred through the ranges. -
