  • Gentildonna Becomes First 3Yo Filly to Claim Horse of the Year Title
FROM: Yuji Kinoshita General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, The Japan Racing Association (JRA) DATE: January 28, 2013 GENTILDONNA BECOMES FIRST 3YO FILLY TO CLAIM HORSE OF THE YEAR TITLE The Japan Racing Association today will present its 2012 Horse of the Year title to Gentildonna, who turned in a stellar season as the first three-year-old filly to capture the Japan Cup and only the fourth filly in JRA history to sweep the Triple Crown for fillies. The annual JRA Awards, which will be handed out in a ceremony today, recognize horses, trainers, jockeys and thoroughbred-related individuals and organizations for accomplished performances or achievements in the 2012 season. Gentildonna scored her historic victory in the Japan Cup against one of the toughest-ever fields, including Solemia and 2011 Horse of the Year Orfevre, who had recently taken first and second, respectively, in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The Deep Impact filly, who dominated judging by receiving 256 out of 289 votes, is the first three-year-old filly to win the JRA’s highest honor. She also was the unanimous pick for Best Three-Year-Old Filly. Gentildonna and jockey Yasunari Iwata Orfevre, with a sole G1 triumph in the Takarazuka Kinen after winning four G1 titles in the previous season, earned high marks for his runner-up effort in the Arc to collect 273 votes for Best Older Colt or Horse. Gold Ship, who claimed two of the season’s three-year-old classics and bested a field of senior G1 runners in the Arima Kinen, was the unanimous pick for Best Three-Year-Old Colt.
