Keeneland cont. Elaborate Further... In August of 2002, Anita Cauley entered Ornate (Gilded Time) for a $30,000 claiming tag at Ellis Park. As the even-money choice, the 5-year-old went unclaimed in an easy victory. That was a good thing, as Ornate, in her very next start, registered the first black- type win of her career in the grassy Pleasant Temper S. at Kentucky Downs.

Trey Young, Lee McMillin & Anita & Jim Cauley L Marquardt Fast forward a year, and Ornate was put up for sale again, this time at Keeneland November. The asking price was higher, and ultimately, Cauley opted to buy back the mare at $95,000. Again, this was a good thing. That=s because Ornate went on to be something of a mini blue hen for Cauley, producing three homebred stakes winners, including the recent GII Pocahontas S. winner On Fire Baby (Smoke A I used to just race, then breed and sell them when Glacken), as well as the Grade II winner High Heels they were done racing,@ Cauley said yesterday from (E Dubai) and SW & GSP French Kiss (Hussonet). French Kiss, a winner of nearly $285,000, gave Ornate her second black-type winner, while On Fire Baby came on since the catalogue to make it a hat trick. On Fire Baby aired by four lengths on debut at Ellis Park in August, tired to fifth in the GI Alcibiades at Keeneland Oct. 7, then bounced back to win the Pocahontas at 9-1 odds Oct. 30 (video). AWe were hearing stories from Florida when she was a 2-year-old that she was a nice filly,@ Cauley said of On Fire Baby. Cauley said that temperament is something Ornate instills in all of her foals. AShe was a great filly in terms of her attitude--she really wanted to go to the racetrack, and that can be half the battle,@ said Cauley. MAKING MAGIC ON THE GOLD COAST The Magic Millions Yearling sale on the Gold Coast in January may not have been a regular stop for Northern Hemisphere buyers in the past, but it should be marked on the calendar in the future. Not only is it one of the leading venues to buy yearlings in the country, but the backdrop is regarded as one of the top tourist attractions in all of Australia. AIt is just a fantastic time of year to be on the Magic Millions Sales Pavilion Gold Coast,@ said Vin Cox, managing director of Magic Millions. AIt is a phenomenal destination; the beaches, the weather, the parties and the fashion are just spectacular. There are theme parks for the kids, restaurants to die for and views that are simply out of this world. When you contrast that to that time of year in Kentucky, Ireland or England, it will blow your socks off. While Magic Millions is always looking to draw new patrons--from both the domestic and international arenas--to the Gold Coast through incentives and bonuses, Cox explained that the Thoroughbred industry in Australia is fueled by something much deeper than just what promotional dollars can buy. AThe Australian racing industry is a vibrant industry, with a lot of young fans and players,@ offered Cox. AIt is in the daily press, it is commonly on television, and everybody likes to go to the races at some stage in the year. Racing is ingrained in our culture.@ Cox continued, AIt is a well-funded and well-organized industry. Prize money is very good, our races are very well attended, and people really take pride in going to the races by dressing up. We hope to have some run off from that. Maybe people will want to get involved by coming to Magic Millions to buy a horse and take it from there.@ In addition to a catalog that offers buying opportunities for all price brackets, the most basic ingredients that continue to draw families and horsemen and horsewomen alike to the Gold Coast every January remains the wealth of summertime activities and postcard-like locales, comprised of golden beaches, scenic hiking trails, theme parks, shopping, nightlife and entertainment. AAnyone who comes here will be blown away by just how much fun it is and what there is to offer,@ said Cox. AWe have sand and surf combined with great racing and a great sales carnival.
