Parallel rays, collected by many lenses, must (through reflection or refraction) cross this transparent clear-zone in such a way that they become focused on one receptor. Superposition depends mostly on diameter and curvature of the cornea, size and shape of the crystalline cone, lens cylinder properties of cornea and cone, dimensions of the receptor cells, and width of the clear-zone. We examined the role of the latter by geometrical, geometric-optical, and anatomical measurements and concluded that a minimal size exists, below which effective superposition can no longer occur. For an eye of a given size, it is not possible to increase the width of the clear-zone cz ¼ dcz=R1 and decrease R2 (i.e., the radius of curvature of the distal retinal surface) and/or c ¼ dc=R1 without reaching a limit.

U radu su objedinjeni literaturni podaci koprofilnih člankonoţaca Hrvatske te rezultati vlastitog istraţivanja ove skupine organizama na području planine Biokovo. Uzorkovana je balega domaćih ţivotinja na kojoj je ustanovljena prisutnost ukupno 62 vrste koprofilnih člankonoţaca rasporeĎenih unutar tri reda: kornjaša, grinja te dvokrilaca. Najviše zabiljeţenih koprofilnih člankonoţaca pripada kornjašima (7 porodica). Najveći broj zabiljeţenih svojti pripada porodici Scarabaeidae. Rezultati obraĎeni različitim analizama dali su uvid u ekologiju, pojavnost, rasprostranjenje te utjecaj smanjenja stope stočarstva na koprofile i travnjačka staništa unutar kojih čine vaţan element bioraznolikosti. Predstavljene su mjere očuvanja te potreba za zaštitom koprofilnih organizama. In addition to feeding on mammal dung, dung beetles also use dung to form underground brood balls which are used for larval development. This process instigates several ecological functions, such as dung removal and nutrient cycling. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of dung removal in pastoral and natural habitats but the effect of dung beetle body size on the amount of nutrients transferred when dung is buried remains unclear. In this preliminary study, we investigate the role of African dung beetle body size in nutrient cycling. We analyzed the nutrient content of soil directly underneath dung pats using three treatments containing dung beetles of varying sizes and one control treatment without beetles over a 112-day period. Our data show that dung beetle body size has a significant effect on the quantity of macronutrients transferred over time and that dung beetle body size is an important factor in the type and amount of nutrients transferred.

However, our knowledge of the interplay between individual and social factors in determining rank trajectories of males is still limited. The overall aim of this the- sis was therefore to investigate mechanisms that underlie individual dominance rank trajectories in male crested macaques (Macaca nigra) and to highlight po- tential individual and social determinants of how males can achieve and maintain the highest rank possible. Data for this thesis were collected on 37 males during a field study on a natural population of crested macaques living in the Tangkoko- Batuangus Nature Reserve in Indonesia. In study 1, I validate Elo-rating as a particularly well suited method to quantify dominance hierarchies in animal species with dynamic dominance relationships. In studies 2 and 3, I suggest a personality structure for crested macaque males consisting of five distinct factors and further demonstrate that two personality factors determine whether males will rise or fall in rank.
