This nasalization is known to lead to changes in perceived vowel quality. The goal of this project is to verify if it is beneficial to first recognize nasalization in vowels and treat the three groups of vowels (those occurring before nasal consonants, those occurring after nasal consonants, and the oral vowels which are vowels that are not adjacent to nasal consonants) separately rather than collectively for recognizing the vowel identities. The standard Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) and the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) paradigm have been used for this purpose. The results show that when the system is trained on vowels in general, the recognition of nasalized vowels is 17% below that of oral vowels. -

Introduction This paper is concerned with the analysis of certain rules governing nasality and nasal assimilation during recitation of the holy Quran. I These rules are a subset of tajwi:d, a set of rules governing the correct prescribed recitation and pronunciation of the Islamic scriptures. The first part of the paper will describe the historical and cultural importance of the Quran and tajwi:d, with the proposition that a tension or conflict between the necessity for clarity and enunciation and the desire for beautification of the divine words of God is the driving force behind tajwi:d's importance. Though the rules are functional rather than "natural," these prescriptive rules can be integrated into a study lexical phonology and feature geometry, as discussed in the second section, since prescriptive rules must work within those rules set by the language's grammar. Muslims consider the Quran a divine and holy text, untampered with and unchangeable by humankind. Western scholars have attempted to identify it as the writings of the Prophet Muhammad, a humanly written text like any other. Viewing the holy Quran in this way ignores the religious, social and linguistic implications of its perceived unchangeability, and does disservice to the beliefs of many Muslims. -

An articulatory theory of sound change An articulatory theory of sound change Hypothesis: Most common initial motivation for sound change is the automation of production. Tokens reduced online, are perceived as reduced and represented in the exemplar cluster as reduced. Therefore we expect sound changes to reflect a decrease in gestural magnitude and an increase in gestural overlap. What are some ways to test the articulatory model? The theory makes predictions about what is a possible sound change. These predictions could be tested on a cross-linguistic database. Sound changes that take place in the languages of the world are very similar (Blevins 2004, Bateman 2000, Hajek 1997, Greenberg et al. 1978). We should consider both common and rare changes and try to explain both. Common and rare changes might have different characteristics. Among the properties we could look for are types of phonetic motivation, types of lexical diffusion, gradualness, conditioning environment and resulting segments. Common vs. rare sound change? We need a database that allows us to test hypotheses concerning what types of changes are common and what types are not. A database of sound changes? Most sound changes have occurred in undocumented periods so that we have no record of them. Even in cases with written records, the phonetic interpretation may be unclear. Only a small number of languages have historic records. So any sample of known sound changes would be biased towards those languages. A database of sound changes? Sound changes are known only for some languages of the world: Languages with written histories. Sound changes can be reconstructed by comparing related languages. -

In this paper, the writer conducted phonological study which attempts to find the phenomena of those processes in song lyrics. In taking the data, the writer transcribed the lyrics of the songs, along with checking them to the internet source, then observed the lyrics to find the phenomena of assimilation, reduction, and elision. After that, she classified the observed phenomena in the lyrics based on the phonological processes. From the data analysis, the results showed that there were three processes found both in the first and second songs: assimilation, reduction and elision. The difference is that in the first song, it has four kinds of assimilation, while from the second song only has three kinds of assimilation. Ohala, Chair Understanding the relationship of aerodynamic laws to the unique geometry of the hu- man vocal tract allows us to make phonological and typological predictions about speech sounds typified by particular aerodynamic regimes. For example, some have argued that the realization of nasalized fricatives is improbable because fricatives and nasals have an- tagonistic aerodynamic specifications. Fricatives require high pressure behind the suprala- ryngeal constriction as a precondition for high particle velocity. Nasalization, on the other hand, vents back pressure by allowing air to escape through the velopharyngeal orifice. This implies that an open velopharyngeal port will reduce oral particle velocity, thereby potentially extinguishing frication. By using a mechanical model of the vocal tract and spoken fricatives that have undergone coarticulatory nasalization, it is shown that nasal- ization must alter the spectral characteristics of fricatives, e.g. -

What is the International Phonetic Alphabet? The aim of the International Phonetic Association is to promote the scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science. For both these it is necessary to have a consistent way of representing the sounds of language in written form. From its foundation in 1886 the Association has been concerned to develop a system of notation which would be convenient to use, but comprehensive enough to cope with the wide variety of sounds found in the languages of the world; and to encourage the use of thjs notation as widely as possible among those concerned with language. The system is generally known as the International Phonetic Alphabet. Both the Association and its Alphabet are widely referred to by the abbreviation IPA, but here 'IPA' will be used only for the Alphabet. The IPA is based on the Roman alphabet, which has the advantage of being widely familiar, but also includes letters and additional symbols from a variety of other sources. These additions are necessary because the variety of sounds in languages is much greater than the number of letters in the Roman alphabet. The use of sequences of phonetic symbols to represent speech is known as transcription. The IPA can be used for many different purposes. For instance, it can be used as a way to show pronunciation in a dictionary, to record a language in linguistic fieldwork, to form the basis of a writing system for a language, or to annotate acoustic and other displays in the analysis of speech. -

Chapter 9 Consonant substitution in child language (Ikwere) Roseline I. C. Alerechi University of Port Harcourt The Ikwere language is spoken in four out of the twenty-three Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Rivers State of Nigeria, namely, Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Emohua and Ikwerre LGAs. Like Kana, Kalabari and Ekpeye, it is one of the major languages of Rivers State of Nigeria used in broadcasting in the electronic media. The Ikwere language is classified asan Igboid language of the West Benue-Congo family of the Niger-Congo phylum of languages (Williamson 1988: 67, 71, Williamson & Blench 2000: 31). This paper treats consonant substi- tution in the speech of the Ikwere child. It demonstrates that children use of a language can contribute to the divergent nature of that language as they always strive for simplification of the target language. Using simple descriptive method of data analysis, the paper identifies the various substitutions of consonant sounds, which characterize the Ikwere children’s ut- terances. It stresses that the substitutions are regular and rule governed and hence implies the operation of some phonological processes. Some of the processes are strengthening and weakening of consonants, loss of suction of labial implosives causing them to become labial plosives, devoicing of voiced consonants, etc. While some of these processes are identical with the adult language, others are peculiar to children, demonstrating the relationships between the phonological processes in both forms of speech. On the Treatment of Consonant Cluster Reduction
ON THE TREATMENT OF CONSONANT CLUSTER REDUCTION Young-Seok Kim In this paper we will consider a theory of Consonant Cluster Reduction (CCR) without deletion rules. Through its analysis of CCR and closely related phenome,1a in the phonology of Korean, this paper explains why CCR should be dealt with by a general convention which we shall refer to as Stray Erasure Principle. It will be shown that, though primarily based on the Korean language, this theory makes correct predic tions about similar phenomena in other typologically unrelated languages such as Menomini. 1. The Syllable Structure of Korean The phonemic inventory of Standard Korean comprises 9 (or 10) vowels and 21 consonants including glides. 1 At the phonetic level, only a limited number of con sonants (i.e. [p=], [t=], [k=], [1], [m], [n] and [IJ] are allowed in the syllable-final position because of Obstruent Neutralization. However, all the consonants can in principle occur both morpheme-initially2 and morpheme-finally provided we admit that there are some accidental gaps for some reason or other. True consonants can also occur before an on-glide y or w. The canonical syllable structure of Korean would then look like this: (1) ~ (C) (G) V (C) Since we do not find evidence supporting the syllable-internal hierarchical struc ture, we will take no account of the possibility of assigning G either to the onset (cf. B.-G. Lee 1982) or to the nucleus, which in turn is dominated by an upper node, namely the rime. BROWN UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON Abstract The history of the phoneme ∂ad and its merger with the phoneme Âa’ has proven enigmatic. By presenting data from Old South Arabian speech communities and lexical data from the Islamic tradition, this article brackets a period of ∂ad / Âa’ free variation between the fourth and mid-eighth centuries CE. These data support the theory that the pre-Islamic and early Islamic Arabic speech community was divided into two segments in respect to the ∂ad / Âa’ relationship: a group that pronounced both separately and produced the lettered tradition of the Qur’an, and some that did not distinguish between the two phonemes. This article presents data from the earliest Arabic texts on ∂ad / Âa’ minimal pairs, those of Abu ¨Umar al-Zahid (d. 345/957) and al-∑aÌib Isma¨il Ibn ¨Abbad (d. 385/995). These texts also pro- vide glimpses into how the Islamic lexical tradition explained the his- torical link between the two phonemes. Jacobsen Jr. University of Nevada A well-known phonological characteristic of most of the Indian languages of the Northwest is the presence of contrast ing pairs of plain and labialized dorsal consonants. In 1920 Boas observed: The study of phonetics indicates that certain features have a limited and well-defined distribution which, on the whole, is conttnuous. To give an example: the extra ordinary development of the series of k sounds and of laterals (1 sounds) is common to the most diverse languages of the NOrth Pacific coast, while in California and east of the Rocky mountains this characteristic feature disappears •••• The labialization of k sounds following an 0 or u is widely spread in the eftreme-Northwest, arid infrequent 'Outside of that territory.
