"Füssen im Allgäu", as the town is usually known, is on the edge of the Alps and marks the end of the Romantic Road that begins in Würzburg. Füssen is right on the German/Austrian border in the south of the Allgäu in the administrative district of Swabia. The town looks back on a rich history that reaches right back to the Roman era. According to archaeological findings from the castle hill it appears that in the 5th century Füssen served as a Roman military base and as a stopping off point for those travelling along the Via Claudia Augusta to that passes the town. Füssen, that is today home to some 15,000 people, is divided into four sectors including the historic town centre that annually attracts large numbers of visitors from all over the world.

Further major attractions include the castles of Neuschwanstein and , situated in the town of the same name just five kilometres from Füssen as well as the unique theatre that was only completed in 2000 and which is now the setting for theatre and concerts of every genre. The theatre is now recognized as playing an important role in the region’s cultural scene. Füssen not only has a late Gothic castle complex known as the "Hohe Schloss" but also the baroque "St. Mang" monastery that sits high above the town. Surrounded by mountains and lakes Füssen is not only an attractive all-year-round destination for tourists but is also recognized as being an important hub for both trade and Hohenschwangau Castle industry.
