Catterall: “Tyrone Nurse Is Just Another Piece of Meat!” CATTERALL: “TYRONE NURSE IS JUST ANOTHER PIECE OF MEAT!” Undefeated Jack Catterall takes on Tyrone Nurse next Saturday for the British Super-Lightweight title, and he’s already displaying extreme confidence in his abilities. Speaking to British Boxers, Catterall spoke on the benefits of sharing the ring with the two World Champions after sparring Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Alvarez. “It gives you that experience, it’s being in that environment and feeling uncomfortable. You feel the pressure when you’re in the gym with World Champions, but you can see the graft that they do put in,” he revealed. When asked about Nurse the southpaw added: “I would never underestimate [Tyrone Nurse], I know he’s training the best he can. I can’t put these fighters on a pedestal…Tyrone is just another piece of meat and I have to go through him!” The British Title holds weight for the 24-year-old, and he’s looking forward to a domestic match-up of this magnitude. “I’m happy, I couldn’t con my supporters with sh*t fights. They work hard to see [the fights]. It’s a good fight, Tyrone’s a good fighter. We’re going to put a good fight on for the fans. “I’m excited [to fight in Leeds], I’m going to bring an army from Chorley down to Leeds, the Leeds fans love a good scrap I can’t wait.” Main event on the card sees Leeds hero Josh Warrington (25-0, 5 KOs) take on the undefeated Dennis Ceylan (18-0-2, 8 KOs) in a Final Eliminator for the IBF Featherweight World Title. Rising Manchester Super-Featherweight star Zelfa Barrett (18-0, 11 KOs) has a chance to win his first professional title when he takes on Chris Conwell (9-2, 2 KOs) for the Vacant English strap. Undefeated Liverpool Super-Welterweight talent J.J Metcalf (16-0, 8 KOs) takes on Leeds native Damon Jones (15-1, 3 KOs) in an official eliminator for the British title currently held by Warren stablemate Liam Williams. An action-packed undercard also features British Middleweight Champion Tommy Langford (18-1, 6 KOs); former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and GB squad standout Sam Maxwell (Super-Lightweight, 3-0, 2 KOs); Bradford Welterweight Darren Tetley (14-0, 5KOs); Chapel-en-le-Frith Cruiserweight Jack Massey (12-0, 6 KOs); Doncaster Featherweight Reece Mould (6-0, 2 KOs); Leeds Flyweight Jack Bateson (1-0, 1 KO) and the professional debut of Leeds fighter Jack Daniels. Tickets for Warrington vs. Ceylan priced at £40 (Upper Tier), £50 (Lower Tier), £70 (Floor), £100 (Floor), £150 (Foor) and £250 (VIP/Hospitality) are now available from: First Direct Arena www.firstdirectarena.com 0844 2481585.

  • Lou Dibella – Khurtsidze Can Crush
LOU DIBELLA – KHURTSIDZE CAN CRUSH SAUNDERS’ DREAMS Billy Joe Saunders has been warned that his dreams of facing the winner of Canelo Alvarez v Gennady Golovkin will be ruined by the desire of Avtandil Khurtsidze. Undefeated Saunders, 27, makes the second defence his WBO Middleweight title against the colourful Georgian at London’s Copper Box Arena on July 8, live on BT Sport and BoxNation. Khurtsidze sealed his status as mandatory contender for the Hatfield traveller’s World crown with a fifth round win over Tommy Langford in Leicester on April 30. It was his sixth consecutive KO win since moving to Brooklyn and signing with Lou DiBella, one of the World’s leading promoters. Saunders narrowly beat another DiBella boxer Artur Akavov in December and the New York promoter believes the Briton faces an even tougher night against Khurtsidze who has won 33 of his 37 fights. DiBella said: “Billy Joe is a very skilled fighter, but you never know which Billy Joe is going to show up. “The fight with Akavov was a close, competitive fight. No one predicted that and Billy Joe hasn’t looked the best of himself in a long time. “The one thing about Khurtsidze is that he’s hungrier than Billy Joe, he’s relentless with his attacks and capable of doing damage at any stage of the fight. “Khurtsidze could be down by four or five rounds and still mount offensive attacks that could win him the fight. “He is dangerous from the first bell until the end of the 12th round.” With the IBF, WBA and WBC belts on the line when Canelo and GGG meet in September, the winner of Saunders v Khurtsidze will be in line for a huge payday and the chance to become undisputed World Middleweight Champion against the victor.

  • English Champ Ekow Essuman Joins Queensberry
ENGLISH CHAMP EKOW ESSUMAN JOINS QUEENSBERRY ENGLISH CHAMPION WELTERWEIGHT Ekow Essuman has signed a promotional agreement with Frank Warren to fight under the Queensberry Promotions banner. The former decorated amateur – who reached the Podium Squad within the Team GB set-up – has now reached 13-0 as a professional, with five of those wins coming via KO. The Nottingham man took possession of the English title in October 2018 with an impressive stoppage victory over Andy Keates before perhaps his most notable win arrived in March 2019. The redoubtable former British champion Tyrone Nurse was selected for a voluntary defence of his belt and the man known as ‘The Engine’ showed just why by edging his more experienced opponent over ten rounds. The most recent defence of the now 31-year-old came back in November at York Hall when he ventured down south to put his belt on the line against the previously unbeaten Curtis Felix Jr. Essuman inflicted a first defeat on the home fighter with an eighth round stoppage and now has the British title firmly in his sights. “I am ecstatic, really ecstatic,” said Essuman on joining forces with the Hall of Fame promoter. “I have been a pro since 2016 after missing out on the Olympic draft – even though I was on GB and fighting across the world – and I have got myself to English champion and defended against someone like Tyrone Nurse to getting myself into position for a British eliminator. “So I am thrilled to be coming on-board with Frank Warren now and he is the perfect person to take my career and showcase it to the public.

CATTERALL’S LAS VEGAS TRIP TO WARN TAYLOR-RAMIREZ WINNER: “I’M NEXT” JACK CATTERALL is on a Las Vegas spying mission as he plots to become World Super-Lightweight champion. Edinburgh’s IBF and WBA World champion Josh Taylor meets WBC and WBO title holder Jose Ramirez on Saturday and Catterall will be front row making sure the winner doesn’t duck out. The winner has vowed to face WBO mandatory contender Catterall next after the Chorley man agreed to step aside and allow all four belts to be at stake in boxing’s capital. Catterall, who boasts a pristine 100% record with 26 wins, no losses and no draws, said “I’m excited to be here for fight week. “It is a massive fight, hopefully it is a good fight and I can let everyone know I’m serious about fighting the winner. “I will do some training, sparring and ultimately watch the fight. After the weekend we will have a clear direction of where we’re going. “I stepped aside on the promise that I will get the winner and I am under no illusion because anything can happen, but ultimately I have allowed them to create this big undisputed title fight. “I have beaten everyone in front of me, done everything asked of me on my side.” Catterall, 27, believes that a Taylor win will set-up a huge England v Scotland battle, but has doubts about Ramirez keeping his word if he triumphs. “I hope Josh wins and hope he is a man of his word” added Catterall, who will spend two weeks in Las Vegas training.
