The settlement ended a longstanding flood-control dispute between the county and Colonies Partners. More videos:

The vindicated defendants maintained their innocence from the beginning, alleging the prosecution was politically motivated. In February 2010, Ramos and then state Attorney General Jerry Brown held a news conference announcing the Colonies’ case as the “biggest corruption scandal in county history, if not the state of California.” Ramos was re-elected District Attorney that year and Brown was elected governor.

Ramos denies the case was politically motivated.

The former defendants have taken legal action against the county and state. And on March 1, Colonies Partners filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the county and state in U.S. District Court in Riverside.

Stephen G. Larson, attorney for vindicated Colonies corruption case defendant Jeff Burum, said District Attorney Mike Ramos is “throwing his subordinates under the bus” and distancing himself from the bungled bribery case.

Hits and misses

Despite the failed Colonies prosecution, Ramos touted the successes of his office and the Attorney General’s Office, including the conviction of former Rancho Cucamonga councilman and Assessor’s Office employee Rex Gutierrez, who was sentenced in December 2010 to two years, eight months in prison for stealing $147,000 in taxpayer money in the form of fraudulent pay and expenses from March 2007 to January 2009.

Another win for prosecutors, said Ramos, was the attorney general’s prosecution of former county Supervisor Neil Derry, convicted of a misdemeanor for failing to properly report a $5,000 campaign contribution he received from a Highland developer in 2007.

Like the vindicated Colonies defendants, Derry believes his criminal case was politically motivated because, while serving as county supervisor, he pushed to trim the district attorney’s budget and eliminate take-home vehicles for its investigators.

“Ramos uses his office to pursue and charge his political adversaries for minor infractions. In my case, he had the attorney general charge me for one, single campaign violation that was actually properly reported, after I had him investigated for sexual harassment that cost taxpayers $140,000,” Derry said in a statement.

Initially charged with two felonies, Derry entered into a plea agreement with the AG’s Office, pleading guilty to the misdemeanor count. His conviction was subsequently dismissed and his probation terminated.

Ramos was cleared in 2010 of sexual misconduct allegations by former investigative technician Cheryl Ristow, who claimed to have had an affair with Ramos from September 2003 to February 2005. A six-month investigation by an outside law firm determined that Ristow’s allegations were unfounded, and that she had a history of disciplinary action at the DA’s Office.

Ethics and integrity

Ramos stands by his office’s record of ethics and integrity. He maintains the Colonies case was completely above board and justified. He stressed,

He said his focus was cracking down on gang crimes and human traffickers and working to reform the death penalty, leaving the Colonies case to the team of prosecutors assigned to it.

“The people who are attacking me about that case think that I was involved in it on a daily basis. The team was put in place years ago,” Ramos said. “So I want to make it very clear that people who may have thought I was involved in that on a daily basis, I was not. I had trusted my team.”

Stephen G. Larson, attorney for former Colonies defendant Jeff Burum, interpreted that as Ramos trying to distance himself from the case.

“It is sad that, after years of politicizing the Colonies prosecution and using it as the basis for his re-election campaigns, Mike Ramos is now running from it, is claiming that it was not a ‘priority,’ and is throwing his subordinates under the bus. This is not leadership or justice,” Larson said in a statement.

Rajan Maline, attorney for former defendant Jim Erwin, blamed Ramos for “destroying the reputations and causing untold financial and emotional trauma to these good men.”

“If Ramos is asserting that he RELATED ARTICLES was not involved on a daily basis then we would have to San Bernardino County DA implies challenger is a puppet funded by former add irresponsibility to the list Colonies defendants of faults,” Maline said. “The fact is that this was Ramos’ Colonies Partners files federal lawsuit described ‘biggest case in San against San Bernardino County, top state officials over corruption case Bernardino history.’ If he wasn’t involved on a daily More than $100 million sought by basis, he should have been.” vindicated Colonies corruption case defendants Deputy District Attorney Doug Poston, a prosecutor of more than 20 years and president of the San Bernardino County Public Attorney’s Association, called the allegations against Ramos “hogwash.”

“You have to try the tough cases, that’s how it is, and sometimes it doesn’t always turn out the way you want it to,” Poston said. He said the PAA’s 200 prosecutors formed their own committee that endorsed Ramos for a fifth term in office.

“We believe in Mr. Ramos – his ethics and his integrity,” Poston said.

racing is great and as a driver you never forget the site of your first win. More videos: “I couldn’t have scripted it any better. Being my ‘home’ track it made it even more special. That first win just took so much pressure off my shoulders that I had put on myself.”

Johnson was no stranger to local fans. He had established himself as a standout off-road racer, winning events at Glen Helen Raceway, less than 10 miles north on I-15.

“Back in 2002 coming into the situation I did at Hendrick Motorsports, and following in the footsteps of Jeff Gordon, there was a ton of pressure,” Johnson recalled. “Winning early just was the icing on the cake, it gave me the confidence I needed. One of the best memories as of late was winning in the Superman car in 2016, that was a fun victory lane for sure. It’s awesome seeing all my California friends that come out to the track and it’s just nice to be home for a few days.

“I hope they never have to repave it.”

In a very short period of time, Sprint Cup Series Larson has experienced success driver Jimmie Johnson (48) leads at Fontana. In addition to his the race with 20 laps to go during the Auto win in 2017, he was runner-up Club 400 at Auto as a series rookie in 2013. Club Speedway Sunday in Fontana, CA. March 23, 2014. “It’s always a lot of fun to go to a worn-out surface. Fontana is one of my favorite tracks because there are so many different lanes to choose from and the seams are tricky to drive,” said Larson. “It’s a super-wide race track and you can run anywhere from the bottom to the top. You need to conservative on your tires and be patient against the wall, but also aggressive.

“It’s just an intense race track. Because the race feels so demanding with what you’re fighting in the car, it feels like a long race, but it’s a really fun place to drive.”

Reigning Cup champion Martin Truex Jr. has yet to win in Fontana, but he enjoys competing on the track.

“It has old pavement and it’s a wide race track with lots of racing lanes, high speeds and lots of room,” Truex said. “That’s the biggest thing … you can

race all over it, so it’s lots of fun.

“My favorite part is that there are so many lanes to race on. High, low and in the middle. And it changes throughout the day so there’s always a new place to look for speed.

“My least favorite part of the track is it’s so far away. That’s the only thing I don’t like about it.”

Joey Logano has enjoyed success on the track, and has spent a few moments taking a quick look at the infield.

“I would say one of the coolest parts is the infield,” said Logano. “It’s such a family atmosphere, lots of people riding bikes, playing outdoor games and just having a good time.

“They even have a convenience store, so in my opinion, probably the most underrated infield in NASCAR.”

Tire wear is a major concern for all.

“You can abuse your tires on the short run and suffer for the long run, or vice versa, save your tires early and be rewarded later,” said Paul Menard. “The best part is the old surface, opening up options on which line you can run. Least favorite are the seams, if you run across them wrong it will kill your lap time.”

While the majority of the drivers enjoy racing at Fontana, being in the West for three weeks also brings challenges.

“That’s tough on the families of these crew guys” said Clint Bowyer. “They are either staying out on

According to the U.S. Forest Service, there is usually an influx of eagles during the winter months, from late November to late March or early April. Bald eagles generally stay close to water, thanks to a diet made up of fish and ducks.

Biologists using radio-tracking have learned that the same eagles often return to the San Bernardino mountains year after year, and that when they aren’t in Southern California they’re as far away as Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Canada, according to the Forest Service.

In the film, each of the bullets triggers a different memory.

It’s the same script Hinds used in “Dreamscape,” a stage play performed since 2012 nationally and internationally, except with 10 minutes of set-up added to the beginning. The next 62 minutes are dreams from Myeisha’s life.

“We all want to show our characters fairly, and I

didn’t want to stereotype Myeisha,” said Walker, who won the acting award at the Slamdance film festival in Park City, Utah in January. “She’s not the same as Tyisha, but they are — just as Rhaechyl is, just as any young female is.”

Hinds wrote the film with director Gus Krieger and filmed it locally for close to $200,000 using Inland Empire actors, he said. The stars are Walker, a Banning resident, and John Merchant, formerly of Pomona, as the officer who kills her.

Since Hinds wrote “Dreamscape,” in 2004, Black Lives Matter and others have changed the conversation. There’s no longer the denial of facts he once had to deal with, he said.

What he hopes can happen in 2018 and beyond, he said, is for the film to start a conversation from a point that the news cycle doesn’t facilitate.

“There has to be ongoing vigilance, and I believe the arts are one way to create that type of vigilance by giving us a different outlet for these type of things that are not just a demonstration but are in addition to demonstration and pursuing legal changes,” Hinds said. “So through the beauty of the arts – and there’s a lot of beauty in the way the story is told – I’m hoping it allows us to have this conversation that the police and the African American community have had really since the inception of slavery and beyond.”

Officials said the suspect, identified as Isaias De Jesus Valencia, 39, was being pursued by police Friday

night when his car crashed near the apartment complex. The man ran from his vehicle and was followed by officers on foot.

He went into the apartment complex and barricaded himself inside one of the units. When officers arrived, authorities said, he fired through a door, striking the two officers. 

The second officer was shot in the face as he attempted to rescue Casillas, Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

It's "tough right now," McDonnell said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Pomona Police Department. It is a family. Everyone is impacted by this."

During the standoff, deputies used tear gas to get the suspect to surrender, but he refused to comply, according to the Sheriff's Department. Deputies with the Special Enforcement Bureau eventually entered the building and deployed a police dog.

Valencia was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempting to murder police officers and is being held without bail.

McDonnell said authorities can start the "actual investigation" now that the suspect has been arrested.

"It has been a long night," he said.

Casillas was sworn in as a Pomona police officer in September 2017, Pomona Police Chief Michael Olivieri

told reporters. He was nearly finished with his field training when he was killed.

"It's a sad day for our community and a sad day for law enforcement in general," Olivieri said. "He left his family at home to protect yours."

Raised in Los Angeles County, Casillas attended "local colleges and universities," Olivieri said. He is survived by his wife and two children, as well as his parents and two brothers.

Olivieri called Casillas a hero, and a "man to be looked up to." He had worked in different positions within law enforcement — as a records specialist and jailer before becoming a police recruit — to "better prepare himself to achieve his goal" of becoming an officer.

"His ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten," Olivieri said.

At the end of the news conference, sheriff's deputies surrounded Olivieri as he walked away from the crowd. Some patted him on the back.

Earlier Saturday, more than a dozen Pomona police officers, L.A. County sheriff's deputies and county fire vehicles blocked the street in front of the apartment building where the suspect was barricaded. A handful of SWAT officers were gathered outside the entrance to the beige structure. Every so often, their muffled megaphone calls to the man to come out echoed through the street.

The Napa County Sheriff-Coroner's Office identified the shooter as 36-year-old Albert Wong of Sacramento, who formerly was housed at the Pathway Home, a residential unit within the Yountville Veterans Home. He was found dead next to the bodies of three employees Friday afternoon, all with gunshot wounds.

Authorities identified the victims as the home's executive director, Christine Loeber, 48; therapist Jen Golick, 42; and Jennifer Gonzales, 29, a psychologist with the San Francisco Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.

At a news conference Saturday morning, officials said the victims brought a "unique sense of purpose and humanity to their jobs." 

Yountville Mayor John Dunbar said the Pathway Home program "has been unique from the very beginning," partly because of the way it allowed veterans to interact with the community. The program included activities such as fishing or bowling trips.

In some cases, those in the program needed to be reintroduced into daily life, Dunbar said — that included being in crowded rooms or places with loud noises.

Some local businesses would offer the veterans anything they needed, he said, to "come and relax." http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-veteran-napa-killings-20180310-story.html[3/12/2018 7:41:47 AM] Victims at Yountville veterans facility who brought 'humanity to their jobs' are mourned

"Sometimes that's part of the programming, to just be human," Dunbar said.

He said Loeber was tireless in her efforts on behalf of veterans: "She would sleep in her office more often than not because she had to be there to fill a shift. That's the kind of personal dedication she showed all of us."

The mayor described Wong as "one of our heroes who clearly had demons."

Authorities said they don't yet know whether Wong targeted the victims specifically or chose them at random.

President Trump on Saturday said on Twitter that he mourned "the loss of three incredible women who cared for our Veterans."

Golick's father-in-law, Bob Golick, told the Associated Press that she recently had expelled Wong from the program.

California Sen. Bill Dodd told KGO-TV that Wong had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder from his service in the Middle East.

After an hours-long standoff, law enforcement officers entered the room at the veterans home where the gunman had been holding the hostages shortly before 6 p.m. That is where they found the four bodies.

Cissy Sherr, who with her husband became Wong's legal guardian after his father died when he was a child, told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat that she was devastated by the violence.

"Like many of our young men [in the military], he did see some rough times," Sherr told the paper. "He's always been soft- spoken, honest and patriotic and loyal. It's heartbreaking."

The first Napa County sheriff's deputy to arrive at the scene exchanged gunfire with the gunman, who allowed some of the employees to leave before holing up in a room with the three hostages. Childs said authorities credited the responding deputy for saving lives "by eliminating the ability of the suspect to go out and find other victims."

The deputy was not injured.

Childs said authorities tried throughout the day to reach the gunman on his cellphone to no avail. Three hostage negotiators were at the scene, but the standoff dragged on throughout the day with no contact with the gunman or the hostages. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-veteran-napa-killings-20180310-story.html[3/12/2018 7:41:47 AM] ÿ ÿ
