A big dream has to be fought for.

Concept.

Ferry Porsche gave his all for the sports car of his dreams. His dream came true – not because he hesitated, waited or was lucky, but because he excelled himself.

This attitude, this fighting spirit is found in every Porsche that we’ve built since 1948, in the smallest bolt and in every race that we’ve ever won. It is also evident in every concept. The result was described by Ferry Porsche as follows: “The 911 is the only car that you can drive from an African safari to Le Mans, to the theatre and then on the streets of New York.”

For us, it’s never been about more horsepower alone, but more ideas per horsepower. About engines that are more efficient rather than larger, design that follows principles rather than fashion, and sports cars that you can drive every day.

When all of that comes together, we call it Intelligent Performance. The core of the Porsche marque – and its future. That’s what we are fighting for, and have been since the very start. For a dream that is always guaranteed to make our hearts beat faster.

That’s why we bring all of our skills to bear, continually striving to be even better. To remain out in front, with one goal above all else: to build the next 911 that can do more, delivers a higher output and yet uses less fuel than ever before.

For the best 911 of all time: the new 911.

The route to the future has many highs and lows, but also plenty of curves.

Chassis.

The chassis provides the connection between the vehicle and the road. This is where crucial tenths of a second can be shaved off. That’s why our engineers have developed its strengths even further. For maximum driving pleasure and control, also when driving at the limit.

The standard package includes Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Stability Management (PSM). Both systems offer high levels of stability and safety combined with extraordinary agility by modifying the damping forces or selectively applying the brakes.

Available as an option on all ‘S’ models: rear-axle steering. Previously reserved exclusively for the 911 Turbo and 911 GT3 models, it improves both performance and everyday practicality. For a significant increase in manoeuvrability and stability. Highly practical: the lift system available as an option on all models. It raises the front of the 911 by approximately 40 mm – for increased ground clearance over ramps at speeds of up to approximately 35 km/h (21 mph).

Adrenaline at the push of a button and plenty of thrills and spills guaranteed: the optional Sport Chrono Package. Its functions enable an even sportier setup for the chassis, engine and transmission, catapulting you into new spheres of dynamic performance. Without taking your hand off the steering wheel completely, you can choose between four different settings thanks to the mode switch derived from the 918 Spyder: Normal, SPORT, SPORT PLUS and Individual Mode, which can be used to adapt the vehicle even more closely to your personal driving style.

In conjunction with PDK, the Sport Chrono Package includes three additional functions: Launch Control, motorsport derived gearshift strategy and SPORT Response. The latter is a completely new feature on the 911. Using the button at the centre of the mode switch prepares the engine and transmission for the fastest possible power delivery. This means maximum throttle response – for approximately 20 seconds.

13 Persistent rain, sleet, snow, leaves, sand… the perfect conditions for a round of sport.

Porsche Traction Management (PTM).

The essential feature of all 911 all-wheel drive models: enhanced Porsche Traction Management (PTM).

Derived from the 911 Turbo, the electronically controlled and fully variable multi-plate clutch distributes drive force between the permanently driven rear axle and the front axle even faster and more precisely than ever before.

The driving state of the vehicle is continuously monitored so that it is possible to respond to different driving situations. Sensors are used to collect a range of data, including the rotational speed of all four wheels, the lateral and longitudinal acceleration of the car and the current steering angle.

If, for example, the rear wheels threaten to spin under acceleration, a greater proportion of drive force is transmitted to the front by a more powerful engagement of the multi-plate clutch.

In this way, PTM, working in conjunction with Porsche Stability Management (PSM), always ensures the appropriate distribution of force necessary for excellent driving performance and particularly well-balanced handling at the limit.

The Breeding Ground

Porsche launches its long tradition at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1951 with two 356 SLs. The marque has won a total of 17 overall victories there thus far. Part of the course still consists of a French country road – the most slippery part of the 13.6-kilometre (8.4-mile) circuit.

Start/Finish

Good Foundation

With 21 kilometres (13 miles) of ascents and descents, the Nordschleife – or North Loop – of the Nürburgring in the Eifel region of Germany is the Porsche engineers’ favourite (and most extreme) test track because its range of surfaces comes the closest to actual road conditions. The 918 Spyder is the first series production vehicle to complete the circuit in less than 7 minutes.

But the racing successes here are also impressive. In 1967, a 910 takes the first of 11 overall victories in the 1,000-kilometre race, and in 1983, Jacky Ickx wins the decisive victory in the World Endurance Championship here in a 956. A legendary track, with legendary victories.

The attraction lies in the mix. Three high-banked curves plus roads on the infield: the only place to experience this type of course is at the 24-hour race on the Daytona International Speedway in Florida. At Porsche’s first triumph in 1968, which is a triple victory, the 907 is quick not only on the oval but also on the pit lane shown here – with five drivers switching at the wheel. Porsche has celebrated 19 more overall victories since then. The surface has been renewed only twice over the half-century of Daytona history, the last time in 2010 – it is markedly soft, but also robust.

Hot Dance

Narrow, crooked roads, including more than 72 kilometres (44 miles) of nonstop hills and dales. The Targa Florio circuit in Sicily quickly developed into true Porsche terrain. On bumpy public roads, the compact and agile sports cars can outwit their high-powered competitors. The first overall victory is taken by a 550 Spyder in 1956. Ten more follow, and the Manufacturers’ World Championship race is won at the last Targa Florio in 1973 by Gijs van Lennep and Herbert Müller in a 911 Carrera RSR 3.0.

33 ALL THE RIGHT MOVES FOR THE ROAD

Success on a course depends not least of all on the tyres. Racing tyres and road tyres differ in the following ways:

Tread When the weather is dry, race cars use tyres with no tread, which are known as slicks. The tyres of series production cars, by contrast, always have a tread of at least 6 to 8 millimetres.

Width The tyres of an LMP1 race car such as the 919 Hybrid are 310 millimetres wide on both the front and rear axles. By comparison, the Carrera S tyres measure 245 millimetres on the front axle and 295 on the rear.

Pressure Racing tyres are inflated to considerably lower pressures than tyres for the road: 1.9 bar in an LMP1 versus 2.7 bar for the rear axle of series production cars.

Working temperature A racing tyre enjoys better grip thanks to working temperatures of more than 100 degrees Celsius. It has twice the grip of a normal passenger-vehicle tyre, which operates at an average of 60 degrees Celsius.

Lateral acceleration A series production car is subjected to up to 1 g of lateral acceleration under routine conditions, whereas the tyres of LMP1 race cars withstand up to 4 g when speeding through curves.

Deceleration Because drag and the enormous downforce amplify braking to a substantial degree, up to 5 g of negative acceleration are applied to the tyres. For standard-series tyres, this figure is a good 1.3 g.

Mileage The softer rubber blend in racing tyres means lower mileage values. Whereas the tyres of passenger cars are changed only after many thousands of kilo- metres, tyres on the LMP1 need replacing after 750 kilometres, at most.

35 From the art of building legendary sports cars. The ‘Inspiration 911’ sculpture.

The heart of Porsche beats in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. It was here in 1963 that the first 911 rolled off the assembly line. No other sports car has proven such a source of fascination and no other vehicle has delighted more car enthusiasts worldwide. As you will discover once again in this edition of Porsche News – it is at the very core of the Porsche brand.

Taking inspiration from this legendary heritage, the British artist Gerry Judah has created a sculpture. Its title speaks volumes: ‘Inspiration 911’. It consists of three pillars reaching up to 24 metres in height, each crowned with a Porsche 911 at the top: an F-series from 1970, a G-series from 1981 and the latest generation 911.
