His Excellency Daniel Mulhall Ambassador of Ireland to the United States Daniel Mulhall took up duty as Ireland’s 18th Ambassador to the United States in August 2017. He was born and raised in Waterford and undertook his undergraduate and post-graduate studies at University College Cork where he specialised in modern Irish history. Ambassador Mulhall joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1978 and served early diplomatic assignments in New Delhi, Vienna (OSCE), Brussels (European Union) and Edinburgh, where he was Ireland’s first Consul General, 1998-2001. He served as Ireland’s Ambassador to Malaysia (2001-05), where he was also accredited to Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. In 2005, he was conferred with an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland for his work in connection with the Asian tsunami. From 2009 to 2013, he was Ireland’s Ambassador to Germany. Before coming to Washington, he served as Ireland’s Ambassador in London (2013-17). During his time in Britain, he was a regular speaker on political, literary and historical topics at several universities, including at Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Durham, King’s College London and the London School of Economics. He also spoke at the Oxford Literary Festival, the Newbury Festival, the Liverpool Literary Festival, and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. He was a regular speaker at the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Irish Studies and is an Honorary Fellow at the Institute. Before departing for Washington, he was made a Freeman of the City of London in recognition of his work as Ambassador. During his diplomatic career, Ambassador Mulhall has held a number of positions at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including as Director-General for European Affairs, 2005-2009. He also served as a member of the Secretariat of the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation (1994-95), which was set up in 1994 in order to promote political dialogue between different political traditions in Ireland. From 1994-98, he was the Department’s Press Counsellor and in that capacity was part of the Irish Government’s delegation at the time of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Ambassador Mulhall maintains a keen interest in Irish history and literature. He is the author of A New Day Dawning: A Portrait of Ireland in 1900 (Cork, 1999) and co-editor of The Shaping of Modern Ireland: A Centenary Assessment (Dublin, 2016). He has made numerous contributions to books, newspapers and journals published in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Britain. He and his wife Greta, who previously worked at the Australian embassy in New Delhi, have two adult children living in Edinburgh and London. Global CEO Roundtable - Moderator Danny McCoy, Chief Executive Officer Danny McCoy has been Chief Executive Officer of Ibec since 2009. Ibec is Ireland’s largest business representative organisation and the country’s largest lobbying group. It has 240 staff in seven locations and has 38 sectoral brands and substantial presence within the European Union through Ibec’s Brussels office. Prior to joining Ibec, Danny was a senior economist at both the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and the Central Bank of Ireland in Dublin. He has held lecturing posts at Dublin City University, University College London, University of Oxford and Trinity College Dublin. He has been a consultant for the European Commission and the OECD. He has been a member of the Irish National Competitiveness Council, the National Economic and Social Council, the Commission on Taxation and the National Training Agency. He led a European Macroeconomic Forecasting Network for the European Commission of eleven national research institutes. He is currently President of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland, Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Engineers, Board member of MaREI and member of the Export Trade Council, Executive Bureau of Business Europe, SME Forum and Government’s Balance for Better Business Group. His academic work in the early 1990s covered carbon taxation and Sustainable Development for which he received a ESR scholarship and the Barrington Medal for researchers under 30. Global CEO Roundtable - Panelist Madeline Bell, President & CEO Ambassador’s Award Recipient – 2013 Madeline Bell is the President and CEO of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), one of the top-ranked children’s hospitals in the United States. A bold and visionary leader, Ms. Bell champions change with empathy and integrity, inspiring the nearly 20,000 employees in the hospital’s $3.2-billion-a-year health system and research institute to create breakthroughs that have worldwide impact. Ms. Bell began her career as a pediatric nurse at CHOP in 1983, later leaving the organization to move into hospital administration. She returned to CHOP in 1995, and has since held a number of leadership positions, advancing from Vice President to Senior Vice President to Executive Vice President to Chief Operating Officer. In 2015, she assumed the title of President and CEO. Ms. Bell has received many awards and accolades, including The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Industry Icon Award and the Philadelphia Business Journal’s Most Admired CEO Award. She was named one of Modern Healthcare’s “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” in 2017, 2018 and 2019, one of its “Top 25 Women Leaders” in 2019, and one of its “50 Most Influential Clinical Executives” in 2020. She was also included on Women Inc.’s 2018 list of “Most Influential Corporate Directors.” Ms. Bell is the author of the blog Heels of Success, which offers guidance to women on how to elevate themselves in the workplace, and the host of Breaking Through with Madeline Bell, a podcast that features interviews with CHOP doctors and scientists, as well as philanthropists, innovators, and business and civic leaders. She holds a bachelor of science in Nursing from Villanova University and a master of science in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania. Global CEO Roundtable - Panelist Joan O’Shaughnessy, Chair of the Board of Directors Joan O’Shaughnessy is Chair of the Board of Directors of Tourism Ireland. Tourism Ireland is responsible for marketing the island of Ireland overseas as a leading holiday destination. Tourism is one of Ireland’s most important sectors. In 2019, Ireland welcomed almost 11.2 million overseas visitors to the island of Ireland, who spent €5.8/£5.1 billion while there. All of this helped to sustain 325,000 vital jobs in communities across the island in 2019, helping to make Tourism one of the island’s largest indigenous industries. Joan has been a leader and representative in the service industry for the past 39 years. She was formerly CEO of Aramark Ireland, a position she held for 12 years, until her retirement in June 2012. During that time, she strengthened the Aramark organisation through mergers and acquisitions to become one of Ireland’s largest American multinational companies, employing more than 4,000 staff across Ireland. Presently, Joan is a business mentor to emerging companies and young entrepreneurs. She is a member of the Institute of Directors, Irish Hospitality Institute and Skål Ireland. Ambassador’s Award Recipient – 2011 Global CEO Roundtable - Panelist Liam Kelly, Chairman, President, & CEO Ambassador’s Award Recipient – 2019 Liam J. Kelly is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Teleflex, a position he has held since January 1, 2018. Mr. Kelly joined Teleflex in April 2009 and shortly thereafter assumed responsibility as President of EMEA. He was then promoted to the position of Executive Vice President and President, International in June 2012. In April 2014, Mr. Kelly was appointed Executive Vice President and President, Americas. In April 2015, Mr. Kelly was named President and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining Teleflex, Mr. Kelly worked at Hill-Rom where he held senior leadership positions over a 10- year career. He was the Vice President of International Marketing and Product Development and previously had been Managing Director of their UK & Ireland businesses. He also held positions at several multinational companies such as Philips and General Electric. Liam holds a Bachelor of Business Studies from the University of Limerick, Ireland. Liam is also a newly appointment Board member of Life Sciences Pennsylvania and serves on the Board of a UK Company, Medstrom, Ltd. Mr. Kelly was born in Galway, Ireland and he and his
