MAROUBRA LEGENDS Dennis had a passion for three sports:

VALE DENNIS GREEN OAM BEM Cycling Surf Life Saving

Dennis joined Maroubra Surf Club in 1947 and as such has had an involvement as a competitor, administrator and coach spanning just over 70 years. He was the National Director of Coaching and Competition (Nutri-Grain Ironman Series – Kellogg’s and SLSA). Many people here today would not be aware but in 1956 Dennis qualified for two Olympic Sports - Cycling and Canoeing. However, because of the cost of equipment, bikes etc was to prohibitive for him at the time, he chose canoeing The rest is history as Dennis went onto win an Olympic

Randwick City Council also acknowledged Dennis’s contribution to Sport by naming a street after him at Maroubra Junction - Green Street. One of the proudest days of his life.

Dennis also with one of his team mates Phil Coles and Kevin Berry (Swimmer) formed the Five Circles Club NSW soon after the 1968 Mexico Games with the objective of establishing a social platform where all Olympians could continue to enjoy the bonding that they experienced being a member of an Olympic Team. The five Circles Club in 2000 became the Olympians Club of NSW and soon after the Olympians Club of Australia was then formed which is now part of the AOC.

Dennis competed at all The Australian Masters Again demonstrating Dennis’ passion for a whole Games from 1987 to 2005 and won an astonishing of sport approach to the Olympic Movement in 68 Gold medals. He also competed at the Australia. Australian Masters Surf Life Saving Championships winning at least one Gold medal in GENERAL each of these for a total of 7 Gold medals. Dennis had a great passion for canoeing and surfing. He mentored and coached many young Dennis’ combined sporting achievements in two competitors in both sports. I remember him clearly sports would I believe be unparalleled in Australian talking to me about two young canoeists over a sporting history across all sports. long period of time when he was coaching and

training out of the AIS centre in Queensland. and nearing the finish line Garry swerved into These two young boys, Jacob Clear and Kenny Dennis accidently hitting in the face with his paddle Wallace, both of whom went on to win Olympic as they crossed the line and there was blood Gold medals. everywhere. Garry was upset and concerned about Dennis’s injury and said sorry mate it was Jimmy Owens from Queensland, Australian just an accident to which Dennis replied with the Canoeing Sprint Head coach had a very close clenched Greeny jaw that he was known for so association /relationship and friendship with what I beat you! Dennis’s Competitive Nature. Dennis which Dennis cherished. Dennis would try anything that presented a There are many stories that I can share with you challenge, he was probably one of the fiercest but again it would take forever and I have been competitors that this country has seen In addition warned not to waffle on. So here we go with a to which he was an unbelievable role model for all couple. young athletes and had such a passion for the two sports he dearly loved Canoeing and Surf A lot of you wouldn’t be aware that Dennis decided which he passed on through decades of because the Maroubra Surf Club at the time was competing coaching and mentoring. short of boat sweeps said to me Johno I can sweep a boat it’s easy and as a result that was the thinking of Dennis and as such volunteered to sweep a junior boat crew. However he was absolutely scared to tell his wife Shirley – he threatened the Ant Dennis Heussner and myself that we were not to talk about it in front of Shirley.

There are two small incidents that happened, Carnival Freshwater – Dennis with a cap in his hand was standing next to Dick Small (Recognized boat sweep) getting ready to take his junior crew into the race when out of the blue he saw Shirley walking down the beach very quickly towards him, seeing Shirley he gave his cap to Dick and told Dick that he had to sweep the boat and ran off towards Shirley. Dick couldn’t believe it.

Then the second incident he was training the junior boat crew off Bare Island at La Perouse, the ocean was wild and all of a sudden the boys looked up while they were rowing and there was no Greeny. He fell off the back floating around in the heavy swell not the best swimmer and the boys had to rescue him. He laughed! At the time he didn’t realize that he had broken his ribs. He threatened them and us again not to tell Shirley that he broke his ribs sweeping a boat. I think he told Shirley that he fell over on the steps at the club. The rest is I received an email from Kenny Wallace from history, no more boat sweeping. Poland last night which I would like to share with everyone and in my opinion sums up the feelings To further demonstrate the competitive nature of of many of the persons lives that he has touched Dennis he was racing in Maroubra’s club races over these past 70 years. wave ski (just a fun type of event) He and a very young Garry McCoy were racing for third place

“Hi Graham Not sure what to say about Greeny, or more like I don’t know where to start. One of the strongest men I know in so many ways. He taught me and was still teaching me not only to be a better athlete but to be a better human being as well. I am only one of the hundreds of people that he has helped throughout his time across multiple generations”

Finally in closing let me paraphrase the statement attributed to Barron Coubertin the founder of the modern Olympic Games that Dennis and I often spoke about:

It is not the winning that is important it is the taking part in It is not the arrival that is important, but the journeying to It is not the doing that is important but the trying to be All the world admires the trier and that is something we can all succeed at: be tops in being a sincere and punishing trier It is to the trier then he would be a champion and that this statement accurately describes Dennis Green as a Champion Athlete, Champion husband to the love of his Life Shirley and a champion father to his daughters Christine and Karen and their families

Dennis thank you for the memories they will be etched in my life and all those lives you have touched forever.
