  • Crossmedia Adaptation and the Development of Continuity in the Dc Animated Universe
“INFINITE EARTHS”: CROSSMEDIA ADAPTATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTINUITY IN THE DC ANIMATED UNIVERSE Alex Nader A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2015 Committee: Jeff Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin © 2015 Alexander Nader All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeff Brown, Advisor This thesis examines the process of adapting comic book properties into other visual media. I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

María José Álvarez Faedo VºBº: Oviedo, 2012 To comic book creators of yesterday, today and tomorrow. The comics medium is a very specialized area of the Arts, home to many rare and talented blooms and flowering imaginations and it breaks my heart to see so many of our best and brightest bowing down to the same market pressures which drive lowest-common-denominator blockbuster movies and television cop shows. Let's see if we can call time on this trend by demanding and creating big, wild comics which stretch our imaginations. Let's make living breathing, sprawling adventures filled with mind-blowing images of things unseen on Earth. Let's make artefacts that are not faux-games or movies but something other, something so rare and strange it might as well be a window into another universe because that's what it is. CATHERINE UNIVERSITY April 1, 2014 2 With many thanks to Patricia Montalbano (project advisor), Rachel Neiwart Emily West and Sharon Doherty for their continuous and invaluable interest, assistance, and patience with the project. 3 Introduction When presented with the simple silhouette of a stylized bat inside a yellow oval, people the world over are able to recognize this emblem and, at the very least, name its wearer. Even as the logo is altered with time, the yellow backdrop traded for a grey one, the awareness persists. Yet even as people recognize Batman’s logo, one person’s impression of the superhero does not always align with another’s: a cheerful, law-abiding Batman who orders orange juice instead of alcohol at bars is Batman as he appeared in the 1960s, and a brooding hero wreathed in darkness and prone to conflicted inner monologues is the Batman of the 1980s.

  • Movement in a Static Medium Jasmina Ouhri
Ouhri 1 Sidekicks Grow Sideways: Movement in a Static Medium Jasmina Ouhri Honors Thesis, Spring 2012 Director: Kenneth Kidd Reader: Terry Harpold Figure 1. From All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder (2008) by Frank Miller and Jim Lee. © DC Comics. Batman and Dick Grayson in the Bat cave after Dick’s parents are murdered. “From its earliest days, the modern comic has grappled with the problem of showing motion in a static medium,” Scott McCloud writes in Understanding Comics (110). In the panel shown above (Fig. 1), artist Jim Lee uses what McCloud calls multiple images of a figure to convey movement: Robin-to-be Dick Grayson vaults backward to stand in front of Batman, leaving behind transparent images of himself that show the path of motion he has taken. Although this technique may be used to depict any character’s motion, artists most often use it to show acrobatic movements like those used by Batman’s Robins. Taking a cue from this Ouhri 2 technique’s depiction of multiple images of Robin integrated into a series, my paper will examine the role of the child sidekick in superhero comic book narratives, more specifically that of the Robin characters in the DC Comics universe. While the final figure in this progression of images is opaque, indicating permanence or unchangeability, the images leading up to it are transparent and ghost-like, indicating when and where the figure was still in motion, still capable of change. The child Robin occupies a similar conceptual space of potential for the adult Batman.

  • Robin's Adolescent Identity Examined Through Critical
ROBIN’S ADOLESCENT IDENTITY EXAMINED THROUGH CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS by RACHEL MENKHUS B.A., University of Colorado Colorado Springs, 2018 A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communication 2019 This thesis for the Master of Arts degree by Rachel Menkhus has been approved for the Department of Communication By Christopher Bell, Chair David Nelson Maja Krakowiak Date August 1, 2019 ii Menkhus, Rachel (M.A., Communication) Robin’s Adolescent Identity Examined Through Critical Discourse Analysis Thesis directed by Associate Professor Christopher Bell ABSTRACT This research examines the social identity roles that are typically attributed to the popular Batman sidekick, Robin. This study looks at how each iteration of the character differs within the historical context of the character while also examining the impact social identity has on the character and story within the text. Social identity is how people might see themselves within a group of their peers and their culture (Leary and Tangney, 2012). This identity most often includes a person’s ethnicity, class, sexuality, sex, and gender (2012). All aspects of social identity have significant impacts on the livelihoods of people and their peers; therefore, it becomes important when studying popular culture to be mindful of what these social identities mean within certain contexts. Keywords: comic books, masculinity, sexuality, ethnicity, gender, class, adolescents iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS To Dr. Bell for your advisement and constant encouragement To Rebecca for support through all my studies To Alex for your careful eye and thoughtful feedback “I can no other answer make, but thanks, And thanks, and ever thanks.” William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night “Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me.
