Wbo Bantamweight Champ Tomoki Kameda Defends
WBO BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMP TOMOKI KAMEDA DEFENDS AGAINST INTERIM TITLIST ALEJANDRO HERNANDEZ & THE RETURN OF LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER ANDRZEJ FONFARA SET FOR SATURDAY, NOV. 1 LIVE ON SHOWTIME® NEW YORK (Oct. 2, 2014) – Undefeated WBO Bantamweight World Champion Tomoki “El Mexicanito” Kameda will make the third defense of his title against interim titlist and mandatory challenger Alejandro Hernandez on Saturday, Nov. 1, live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT) in the co-feature of a SHOWTIME BOXING: Special Edition. In the main event of the tripleheader, popular light heavyweight contender Andrzej “Chicago’s Polish Prince” Fonfara will return to his adopted hometown against experienced veteran Doudou Ngumbu in a 10-round light heavyweight showdown from UIC Pavilion at University of Illinois-Chicago. In the opening bout of the telecast, undefeated super featherweight contender and former Interim WBA Featherweight World Champion Javier Fortuna will take on twice-beaten Puerto Rican Abner Cotto in a 10-round super featherweight bout. The event, titled “The Homecoming,” is promoted by Warriors Boxing. Chicago’s Fonfara, 26, a native of Warsaw, Poland, had won 13 in a row before a hard-fought loss to WBC Light Heavyweight World Champion Adonis Stevenson this past May in a thrilling battle on SHOWTIME. A heavy underdog, Fonfara floored the champion in his hometown of Montreal in the ninth round in a showdown that was closer than most experts anticipated. Fonfara (25-3, 15 KOs) is now 15-1 with one no-contest since July 2008. The WBC No. 6 contender at 175 pounds, Fonfara has defeated three former world title holders -Byron Mitchell (TKO 3), Glen Johnson (a clear 10-round decision in perhaps a career-best victory) and Gabriel Campillo (TKO 9) -in his last six starts. -
Visinia on Oct. 18 at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia Tickets Available Now!
Steve “USS” Cunningham Fights Natu “The Truth” Visinia on Oct. 18 at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia Tickets Available Now! P h i l a d e l p h i a , P A : Heavyweight contender Steve “USS” Cunningham (27-6, 12 KOs) takes on unbeaten Natu “The Truth” Visinia (10-0, 8 K0s) on Saturday evening, Oct. 18, at the 2300 Arena when NBCSN’s popular Fight Night boxing series returns to South Philadelphia. Cunningham’s brutal battle with then-undefeated Amir “Hardcore” Mansour on April 4 in front of an electrified hometown crowd earned him the USBA Heavyweight Title and was an instant classic. The Oct. 18 show also features a solid 10-round junior lightweight contest between Edner Cherry, of Wauchula, FL, and Jerry Belmontes, of Corpus Christi, TX. The Fight Night telecast will begin at 9 PM ET. The doors will open at 6 PM. Tickets priced at $50 and $75 are on sale at Peltz Boxing (215-765-0922) or online at www.peltzboxing.com. They also can be purchased through Wanamaker’s Tickets (215-568-2400). The event is sponsored by Rocco’s Collision. Cunningham, 38, spent the majority of his career at cruiserweight before moving up to heavyweight two years ago. “This is the third undefeated heavyweight that I am facing and he has more career heavyweight fights than I do,” Cunningham explained. “I have fought more undefeated heavyweight fighters than some heavyweights fight in their entire career. I am up for the challenge. It is always a challenge fighting a young untested fighter, but a job has to be done. -
Thurman, Matthysse and Figueroa to Headline Showtime Triple Header on April 26
Thurman, Matthysse and Figueroa to headline Showtime triple header on April 26 A triple header featuring three of the more exciting fighters will consummate a triple header on April 26 at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California as Keith Thurman will defend his welterweight belt against Julio Diaz, Omar Figueroa will take on Jerry Belmontes in a Lightweight title fight while Lucas Matthysse will take on John Molina Jr. in a Jr. Welterweight bout according to Dan Rafael of espn.com. The card will be broadcast on Showtime. “When you can see Thurman, Matthysse and Figueroa all on one night, it’s pretty exciting I think,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. “Julio Diaz will get up for this kind of fight,” Schaefer said. “You saw how he looked in England against Amir Khan. Julio Diaz always comes to fight, and he we’ll see what happens. All of the other top 147-pounders are fighting, so Keith is going to do this fight. We’ll give Julio Diaz one last chance and see what he can make of it. But for Keith, this is about him getting back in the ring without having to wait for some of those other guys while they are getting their fights done. “Being on air and fighting is the formula. You look at [middleweight titlist] Gennady Golovkin. He’s not fighting King Kong but he has stayed busy, and that is a key in this sport. If you stay busy, you stay relevant. If you wait for that big fight and sit out like some of these fighters have done, you become irrelevant. -
Temple Grad Alex Barbosa
TEMPLE GRAD ALEX BARBOSA RETURNS TO BROAD STREET CAMPUS AS A BOXER, NOT A STUDENT, AS PART OF DEC. 8 FIGHT CARD Philadelphia, PA-The old saying, "what's a nice guy like you doing in a place like this," certainly applies to Alex Barbosa, who has two degrees from Temple University but currently is pursuing a career as a professional boxer. Undefeated in three pro fights, Barbosa returns to the North Broad Street campus Saturday evening, Dec. 8, in a scheduled four-round fight on a nationally televised boxing card at Temple's Pearson/McGonigle Halls. Headlining the show, which will be televised live as part of the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series, is a scheduled 12-round contest between USBA heavyweight champion Bryant "By By" Jennings, of Philadelphia, and challenger Bowie Tupou, of Tonga. The eight-fight live card begins at 7pm and the NBCSN broadcast will begin at 9PM ET. The co-feature, also set for TV, is a 10-round junior lightweight contest between Teon Kennedy, of Philadelphia, and Jerry Belmontes, of Corpus Christi, TX. Barbosa, who takes on Joshua Arocho, of Vineland, NJ, in a four-round featherweight contest, graduated from Temple in 2006 with dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and Criminal Justice. Doing things out of the ordinary is nothing new for Barbosa, 26, who was Commanding Officer of his Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at William Allen High School in Alllentown, PA. He had planned to attend either West Point or the Naval Academy, but changed his mind and chose Temple. -

Make a donation today at www.ibw21.org/support IBW BLACK PAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS 7 Foreword - Dr. Ron Daniels Establishes socio-cultural significance of IBW Black Paper around addressing State of Emergency in Black America. “In the best tradition of scholar activism,” Dr. Daniels writes, “the Black Paper is comprised of historical compendiums of pertinent data,” representing “a call to action.” 11 About IBW Black Paper - Dr. Zachery Williams and Dr. Mtangulizi Sanyika Explores the content and importance of the Black Paper. The Black Paper offers “a 50-year reflec- tion on the progress, or lack thereof, of African Americans since 1963, and an effort to suggest strategic directions for the future, which will hopefully re-ignite movements for democracy and social change.” 13 Contextual Overview - Dr. Mtangulizi Sanyika Provides the historical context of the Black Paper. Dr. Sanyika “argues/contends that African Amer- ican social movements are an absolute requirement to achieve even the most modest levels of social justice in America, and are needed to address the racial divide between blacks and whites, as well as the deepening class divide among African Americans.” 2 IBW BLACK PAPER CITED ARTICLES Writings that have attempted to document findings and conclusions with references and sources. 18 Wake Up Everybody: Understanding the Growing Black Unemployment Crisis - Dr. James Stewart Dr. Stewart explores the deepening crisis in black unemployment since 1963.
