"So - what is Cool to Buy?" At major shows like the ANA, I must get asked some variation of this question at a show10 times by customers of ours: "Dave - what do you have in stock right now that is really neat?" 1817 1C 13 STARS PCGS With about 700 slabbed coins currently in stock from $100 to over MS65RB CAC $100k each, sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed when I try to answer. However, I do take the question very seriously. And I try not to fall into that old-time coin dealer rut of simply mentioning the most expensive coin we have in inventory at that particular moment (although we do have a beautiful Libertas Americana medal in silver that can be yours for a mere $135,000. I'll wait while you count the money in your wallet to see if you happen to have it. Dum te dum dum dum). Even if it turns out that you have less than $135k to spend this week, 1846 1C SMALL DATE NGC you are still in luck. I've selected a few neat coins we have in stock as MS65BN N-6 we approach the most important coin show of the year. 1787 Fugio Copper, PSGS MS64 Brown CAC To start it off, how about the very first Federally issued coin? No, it isn't a Chain cent or even a 1792 Half Disme. The Fugio copper - designed by Ben Franklin and issued in 1787. This specimen is a lovely lustrous brown, with a full "Mind Your Business" motto and even some traces of mint red. 1883 1C PCGS PR65BN 1909-S/S 1C S/HORIZONTAL 1857 Half Cent PCGS MS64 Red & Brown CAC S PCGS MS65+RD Moving on, we have a beautiful example of what Roger Cohen referred to as a "Little Half Sister", better known as a half cent. Much like our current cent these days, the half cent in 1857 had pretty much lost its purchasing power, and thus the small mintages in the final years were more than sufficient to meet demand. Fortunately, someone thought to save this specimen in "as made" condition, save for a bit of mellowing of the mint red over the years. 1870 3CS PCGS PR65 CAC 1857-O H10C PCGS MS66 1794 Liberty Cap Large Cent. PCGS VG10 CAC Once exposed to large cents, many collectors gravitate to the 1794's. Books have been written about that date. Multi-million dollar collections have been built containing only the varieties of that date. Nicknames have been given to many of the varieties of 1794 large cents. I guess you could say many collectors are simply obsessed -- it is a magic date to them. 1861 H10C PCGS MS65 CAC The specimen we have in stock is a Sheldon-31. It is not a scarce variety, and that makes it perfect for someone who wants just one 1794 to represent in their collection. It has a lovely milk chocolate brown color that specialists are attracted to. This variety is (somewhat awkwardly, in my opinion) nicknames the "2nd Marred Field". 1864 H10C PCGS MS66 1923-S Buffalo Nickel, PCGS MS65 A key date, and drastically underrated at the gem level. This one is 1867 H10C PCGS MS64 CAC flashy and well struck. The next grade up would cost six times as much, if you could find one. 1860-O 10C PCGS VF35 CAC 1794 Half Dime. PCGS VF20 How about a first year of issue half dime? This specimen is colorfully and attractively toned, and shows all of the detail on this short-lived design. 1942/1-D 10C PCGS MS62FB 1877 25C PCGS MS65 1848-O Half Dime PCGS MS67+ CAC How about the single finest example of a scarce dated coin in the Seated coinage series, a series that has seen an upsurge in demand from collectors in recent years? Oh - and the coin is absolutely gorgeous. To top it all off - it is still priced under $20 grand? 1794 50C NGC GEN O-105 R.5 1807 50C DRAPED BUST PCGS XF40 CAC O-110 R.2 If that sort of thing floats your boat, then we have got your coin right here. 1901 Barber Quarter, NGC Proof 67 Cameo Perhaps your taste runs to something over 100 years old, but looks like it was minted earlier this morning? And still so flashy that you could use it to signal a rescue plane (should you become stranded on a 1810 50C PCGS AU58 CAC desert island)? O-105 R.2 1799 $1 PCGS VF25 CAC BB-159 R.4 1839/8 $10 PCGS XF40 If rare and underrated gold is for you, perhaps you could consider this scarce and under-the-radar two year type coin, offered here in an affordable grade. 1850-O $1 PCGS AU53 CAC 1865 $1 PCGS AU50 1857-S $20 PCGS MS64 CAC Ex. S.S. Central America If you like gold but also like to (secretly) belt out the song, "Under the Sea" from the Disney animated film The Little Mermaid while in the shower, you can make the experience more authentic by doing it with 1889-CC $1 PCGS AU53 this high grade $20 in the soap dish next to you. It spent over 100 years under the sea and comes in a special gold foil PCGS labeled slab to attest to that fact. [Important legal disclosure: Shampoo resistance not guaranteed. Void where prohibited]. 1889-S $1 NGC MS65 1870 Pattern Half Dollar Struck in Copper, PCGS Proof 65 Red & Brown, CAC And finally, you can select one of the rarest coins on the list, with 1882 $1 PCGS PR65 perhaps 5 known in all grades. And despite the absolute rarity, you don't have to be satisfied with a banged up coin in VG with a big hole in it. No - this one is a beautiful gem proof, and is still priced under $6000. 1874 $3 PCGS MS62 I could go on, but you get the idea. Take a moment to look over our website. I would guess that there are 200 or more new coins we have listed in just the past two weeks. You will see millions of dollars worth of hand selected, slabbed & beautiful coins for you to choose from. And if you can make it to the ANA show this year - stop by, sell us 1907 $5 PCGS MS64+ CAC some coins, and look over our current coins.
