Retired Milton businessman Garnett Breeding is donating a prize Staghorn Fern to the Milton Garden Club Breeding, who was inspired many years ago by the Staghorn Ferns in greenhouses at the Hearst Castle in North Carolina and decided he could grow one just as magnificent, is donating his grandfather fern to the Milton Garden Club for an opportunity drawing on May 24. For almost a quarter of a century, friends and neighbors have admired the gigantic fern, which hands in an oak tree in his yard during warm weather and has its own place in the warm garage in the winter. Last summer Breeding added lights for nighttime viewing. Now that he has raised another Staghorn Ferm almost as big to take its place he decided to donate the grandfather fern to the Milton Garden Club. Tickets for the fern are $5 each or three for $10 and it will be awarded to one lucky ticket holder at STEWART’S 2 p.m. on May 24. Tickets will be available at the Garden Center during the Morning Glory Luck of the Irish on March 9, at the Spring Festival of Flowers at Pensacola State College in Milton April 13 –15 and will be sold at the Florida Federation of Garden Works & Land Clearing, Inc. To kick off the last day in Black History Month, the African American Culture Club at Milton High School put on a presentation inside the Milton High School auditorium on Wednes- day celebrating the many forms of black history art and music. The presentation brought out performances from the AACC step team, the Milton Jazz Band and several singing performances by African American students at the school. Cindy Hyman, a social studies teacher at Milton High and AACC sponsor helped put on the performance to help educate students about the importance of black history. During the half hour program, students were educated about soul music legends like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye. Hyman told students that Black History Month is not just for African Americans, but is about African American accomplishments and how they touch every person’s life. Hyman told students, “This month is not just for African Americans … anyone can celebrate Black History Month.”
