3 From the Editor Another sad blow to our community life (see opposite). Coming so soon after we lost Ruth Wilson makes it especially hard. Two wonderful women and two great workers for the public good. Although something of a late convert, Steph became a great supporter of the All Being Well gym and she will be greatly missed there too. Apparently, March 1st is the meteorological start of Spring, and yet March brought us just about every kind of storm except a meteor storm. And that’s all I have to say on the subject of meteorology. I’m not in the least bit superstitious of course, but... well... you know… you can’t be too careful! A very happy Easter to you all. Joe

4 Steph McWilliam 1950-2018 It was with great sadness that I learnt of the sudden and unexpected death of Steph. She was a friend to me and my family for many years, but most of all I think she was a friend to this Parish. She was involved in Pensilva players with her late husband Don and her daughters Fiona and Susi. Then when Don died she moved to for a while, but then came home to Pensilva and became a member of St.Ive Parish Council. She was a very active councillor and took her position of Chairman very seriously, then she was elected to where she represented this constituency for four years until loosing her seat last May. While on the County Council she worked hard to do her best for this Parish and was always available to her electorate. Even the day before she died she was considering joining the Parish Council again. She believed in this parish, this county and this country. She fought hard for Brexit and unfortunately won’t be here to see it achieved. Our thoughts are with her daughters, son in-law and grandchildren. So in her memory let’s see what we can all do to help our parish, give a little of our time and effort and perhaps we can all be proud to live in the parish that Steph cared so much about. Steph's funeral will be held at Glynn Valley Crematorium at 4.30pm on Monday 9th April. Steph loved colour so not too much black please. Angie Haimes. 5 The Pensilva WI Horticultural Show will be held on 8th September 2018. The classes will be as follows:

COMMUNITY COFFEE SHOP in MILLENNIUM HOUSE PENSILVA THE COFFEE SHOP IS NOW OPEN AT THE FOLLOWING TIMES: MONDAYS 10.00am - 1.00pm TUESDAYS 9.00am - 1.00pm WEDNESDAYS 9.00am - 12 noon FRIDAYS 9.00am - 12 noon

6 Parish Council Chairman’s Column It is with great sadness that I heard of the sudden death of Steph McWilliam. She had done a great deal for the parish, both as a Parish Councillor and as a Cornwall County Councillor. She will be greatly missed. On a happier note it is nice to welcome Jenny Hoskin as our new Parish Clerk, she seems to be settling in well, and if anyone has any Council problems she will be available for the public to raise them with her from 1000 - 1200 on a Wednesday, in the Parish office at Millennium House. Car parking around the Parish is again causing complaints to councillors, mainly because of restricting access through some roads, but also parking close to junctions, which restricts the vision of motorists trying to exit safely. Please park on your drive if at all possible, or as close to the kerb as you can, and park away from junctions to allow safe entry and exit from junctions. As part of our continuing volunteer clean up around the Parish, we are hoping to organise a tidy up of the cemetery in the near future, so watch out in next month’s pump for more details of a spring tidy up. As the days get longer and more people are out and about walking, they are noticing and complaining that cleaning up after dogs is still a problem. I know it’s only a few that don't, but I would remind everyone that Cornwall Council has recently increased the penalty for not cleaning up after your dog to a £100 on the spot fine and £1000 for repeat offences!! I hope everyone has a nice Easter break and that the weather is good to us. Pete Haimes

7 Received from Cllr. Marlene Carr on behalf of the Parks and Open Spaces Committee of St Ive Parish Council.

DOG WATCH After so many months of really wet and windy weather, what a pleasure it was to enjoy a few days of cold but sunny days we had late in February, seeing spring flowers emerging and people walking their dogs on fairly dry lanes, roads and pathways. Sadly, this pleasure was well and truly spoiled by the amount of dog mess on roads, pavements and verges around the village. We are lucky enough to have several accessible dog bins but if not, is it too much to ask that owners dispose of the bags at home? We class ourselves as dog lovers but sadly this does not seem to apply when it comes to taking responsibility of picking up dog poo or if they do, somehow find delight in decorating the hedges by hanging the poo bags on the branches!!! Are dog owners not aware of potential health issues transferred to humans (children in particular) which can cause some serious results? Dogs are not grass eaters as are cattle, sheep and horses. We are lucky to be living in such a lovely village with beautiful surroundings so please, can we not work together in making it a clean and healthy environment for everyone to live, enjoy and be proud of? Most dog owners are responsible people so can we encourage others to be the same? Having spoken to a Cornwall Council Adviser (Dog Section) anyone who has a complaint regarding dog fouling are advised that the following evidence is needed (not always an easy task) and to report to the Parish Council in the first instance: a) Photo of dog in action of defecating - with responsible adult (not children) b) Photo of dog and owner walking away from uncollected 'deposit' c) Vehicle number - if applicable d) Date, time and location Dog owners are advised that there is now a fixed penalty of £100 - followed by Court Action if not paid. It would be preferred NOT to take a tough route but if responsibility is not being taken by dog owners then you leave us with little choice. 10 At Merryhue Farm the first signs of spring are showing, and we are excited to announce the start of two new projects. Creative Ageing aims to bring together a group of people from the local community who have an interest in exploring all types of creative arts. It is targeted at the older population, age 65+, and particularly those who suffer from social isolation in our rural community. It is known that taking part in creative activities promotes positive mental health, as does social contact, so by bringing the two together in one project we aim to stimulate conversation, thinking, imagination and friendship. You don’t need to be “good” at art, simply have an interest in exploring your creativity through mediums such as felting, photography, drawing, collage, poetry – the list is endless! Our first session will run on May 4th from 10 – 12.30. We hope to have a walk around the farm and a chat about what the group would like to do in future sessions. There will, of course, be tea and coffee. We provide a free minibus pickup and drop-off service in the local area. If you would like to know more please phone us on 01579 384798 and ask for Nikki. Dementia Adventure is a project being run in partnership with Care Farming UK, to encourage those living with dementia to connect with nature. We know that exercise and mental stimulation can have a positive impact on people who have dementia, helping them to have a better quality of life and sustain their independence for longer. We are planning a series of sessions at Merryhue Farm for those living with dementia and their carers. While we have lots of ideas about activities, they will very much be led by the participants themselves. Our first session is on Friday April 27th, 10 – 12.30. Our plan for the session is to have a walk around the farm and meet some of the animals. If the weather is bad we can stay indoors, meet some of the smaller animals and have a chat about future sessions. If you would like to know more about this, please contact us on 01579 384798 and ask for Nikki. The miniature donkeys at Merryhue Farm, all rugged up against the cold. 11 What a month, the weather has very much been against us! We started the month with an all new low temperature of -8 in our smaller polytunnel, luckily our crops have well protected under fleece and our Chard and Lettuces have been harvested several times over the last few weeks with more pickings to come. We have had several worrying moments with frost bitten plants but everything has recovered although is still tucked up under fleece in case of more cold weather. We have been itching to get our seeds in and have so far got in several trays of Peas, Lettuce, Physalis, Tiger nuts, Sweet potatoes and Carrots, unfortunately our Tomatoes and Peppers are waiting on warmer weather before we can put our seed in. Our team have worked hard in the last few weeks to move fruit bushes into more appropriate positions and also to clear our site of nettles and brambles, we now have plans afoot to build a new raised bed for climbing beans which will also have walls to provide shelter for volunteers in case of rain showers. We would like to be starting several new projects around our site and would be delighted if anyone had any spare pallets, wood, tools and plastic barrels/water containers they are able to donate to us. Thank you to those that have contributed to our community compost scheme, our new bin for kitchen waste is situated just inside our gate with a separate small bin for eggshells next to it. Grass clippings and chicken/ small pet cleanings out can be put directly into our new compost bins at the back of our site, if there is any difficulty with this please bring it along to our volunteer day on a Wednesday and we will be delighted to barrow it up the garden. Thank you to our regular vegetable box customers for your support, if you are not yet buying our organic vegetables there are 2 ways you can buy from us – you can order a box and have it delivered to your door weekly or fortnightly. We offer a regular or large box and also a fruit box. You can also shop at our purple roadside stall where you will find a variety of veg grown on our land and also from Riverford at very competitive prices. Please don’t forget we are always delighted to welcome new volunteers on Wednesdays between 10am and 2pm and provide a lunch of organic vegetable soup and tasty bread. Please note our contact details have changed: Email [email protected] 12 Phone Secretary/Admin (Becky) 07854 353865 Pensilva WI March Meeting The members were enthralled when Marie Hall (ably assisted by David) showed us how to make wonderful fuchsia hanging baskets, including handy tips to make the construction easier for us. She also had numerous lovely photographs of the various types and colours of fuchsia which are available. Members were offered the opportunity to purchase young plants, or we were shown how to take cuttings. Marie very kindly donated a hanging basket for our raffle, made with Jill Pascoe’s own fair hands. Both Marie and David were thanked by Frances Tucker for giving us such an entertaining and informative talk. Flower of the month: 1st Janet Butcher, 2nd Jill Pascoe, 3rd Verna Dawe. 14 QUETHIOCK CofE SCHOOL Quethiock, PL14 3SQ Telephone 01579 343588 Lead Practitioner – Annie Lapham [email protected] We aim ‘To bring the world to our children which will prepare them to go out into the world’ Quethiock School was very surprised to see the snow fall for the first time in a few years. Once we got back to normal, every Tuesday Vicky from Arena Sports has been visiting the school and teaching the KS2 children how to play Tag/touch Rugby. The younger Children have been visited by Alex Robinson who has been putting them through their balanceability paces. The children really enjoy the activities and have all showed real progress. The school sent a team of runners off to Cross Country. The team were all delighted to be wearing the new running kit, very generously paid for by the Parish Council. In the classroom the children have been looking at their topics, World War 2 for our older children and the younger ones have been looking at Inventions. The children are also building robotic sculptures and would be grateful for any donations of nuts, bolts and old keys that anyone can spare. The pre-school children are looking forward to welcoming some new faces in April. If you are interested in visiting our pre-school please call us on 01579 343588 to arrange a visit.

St Ive and District Gardening Association The history of daffodil production in the Tamar Valley proved very interesting when told by Jo Toterdell who, with her family, had been part of it. The idea of sending the early flowers to London started in the in the 1870s, and the first daffodil farm on mainland Cornwall is still the largest daffodil farm in the world! Lent lilies are our only native species of daffodils but many more colourful varieties now grow in the hedgerows where they were tossed when large scale cultivation of daffodils ended here in the post war years. Our season of garden visits begins on April 9th with an outing to Roborough, Plymouth, leaving St Ive car park at 6.15pm. 15 New members are always welcome to join us. 23 Pensilva Memory Café Are you caring for someone with Dementia, or do you perhaps have concerns about your own memory? It can be lonely and worrying but you're not on your own. Many people around you are in the same boat. You don't have to feel isolated. More people than ever are becoming dementia aware, and most organisations need, and want, to be dementia friendly. You may have seen posters for Memory Cafes and wondered what they are about. They are a great place for people with dementia and memory problems to socialise in an informal and friendly atmosphere. Memory Cafes are held in Liskeard, Callington, Launceston, , , and many more places in the South West. Most are held monthly, some are more frequent. Pensilva has its own Memory Cafe. It is a small friendly group who meet once a month for tea and cake and a bit of relaxing fun. We might have some music, a simple game or quiz, and a bit of reminiscing. You can join in if you want to, but nothing is compulsory. We hope you will just relax and not worry about anything for a couple of hours. There is no charge but we do appreciate a donation in the region of £1 each towards expenses. It might be worth coming along to join us just to see what goes on. You might find it beneficial to yourself, or your partner, or a parent, or friend. You might even enjoy it. Why not give it a try? You'd be most welcome. There's nothing to lose. We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month from 2pm – 4pm. We'd love to see you at St John's Church, next to the Millennium Centre, PL14 5NF. For more information contact Carolyn or Pat – 01579 363461 or 01579 362698 email [email protected] or [email protected] If you are a carer of anyone, of any age or condition (not just dementia), you will benefit enormously from the help of Kernow Carers Service.
