S. Lewis, the prerequisite for moral choices. It is not surprising then that he writes his war time social criticism in the genre of fantasy. He further writes in the dystopian and satiric modes, both of which characteristically comprise criticism of society. Modern society of Lewis’ time, he believed, denied absolute values, and wrongly considered goodness and badness to be subjective measures. This vacuum of objective values took several expressions on a societal level. One that Lewis found troublesome was science. Though science made progress in many ways in the first decades of the twentieth century, its utilization of nature, animals and humans threw dark shadows on it. Totalitarian governments took this to an extreme; was humanity going to survive? Science itself Lewis considered good. He even believed that science might bring the cure (1944, 76). What Lewis then means by a denial of objective values is that the wisdom of old ages is missing among scientists and others, a wisdom which wise individuals accumulated in their efforts to conform their souls to reality, and which they achieved through “knowledge, self-discipline and virtue” (1944, 77). -

SWINBURNE’S THE TALE OF BALEN : AN EDITION WITH CRITICAL COMMENTARY A Dissertation Presented for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree The University of Mississippi Warren Hill Kelly June 2011 Copyrighted in 2011 by Warren Hill Kelly All rights reserved ABSTRACT Warren Hill Kelly’s Swinburne’s The Tale of Balen : an Edition with Critical Commentary comprises a variorum-like edition of the poem that records all variances of the poem evident in its manuscript through its first and second editions, Chatto & Windus 1896 and 1904, or those editions produced during the poet’s lifetime and therefore potentially bearing evidence of his editorial input. The edition forms as its basis the poet’s final intention expressed in the manuscript, and notes all alterations within the manuscript and the first two published editions, and by coupling the edition’s text with the notations pertaining to the manuscript, readers have access to, in effect, a transcription of the poem’s manuscript. -

Faculty of Arts English and German Philology and Translation & Interpretation COMPARATIVE LITERATURE: RELIGION AND RELIGIOUS SYMBOLISM IN THE TALE OF THE GRAIL BY THREE AUTHORS by ASIER LANCHO DIEGO DEGREE IN ENGLISH STUDIES TUTOR: CRISTINA JARILLOT RODAL JUNE 2017 ABSTRACT: The myth of the Grail has long been recognised as the cornerstone of Arthurian literature. Many studies have been conducted on the subject of Christian symbolism in the major Grail romances. However, the aim of the present paper is to prove that the 15th-century “Tale of the Sangrail”, found in Le Morte d’Arthur, by Thomas Malory, presents a greater degree of Christian coloration than 12th-century Chrétien de Troyes’ Perceval and Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival. In order to evaluate this claim, the origin and function of the main elements at the Grail Ceremony were compared in the first place. Secondly, the main characters’ roles were examined to determine variations concerning religious beliefs and overall character development. The findings demonstrated that the main elements at the Grail Ceremony in Thomas Malory’s “The Tale of the Sangrail” are more closely linked to Christian motifs and that Perceval’s psychological development in the same work conflicts with that of a stereotypical Bildungsroman, in contrast with the previous 12th-century versions of the tale. Lewis Elizabeth Kirkwood Oglethorpe University Presented at the 22nd Annual Conference of the Association of Core Texts and Courses, April 2016 It is not surprising that C. S. Lewis, the author Theof Chronicles of Narnia, would also dabble in the realm of science fiction. Lewis uses the power of narrative in the third book of his sci-fi trilogy,That Hideous Strength, to give flesh to the philosophical ideas he writes about in his non-fiction work,The Abolition of Man. Lewis confirms and critiques several philosophical ideas when he writes The Abolition of Man and That Hideous Strength, including those of Aristotle and Hobbes. InThat Hideous Strength, many of the examinations of these ideas are revealed through the character Mark Studdock, in part because he is an intellectual, and in part because his character arc is perhaps the most dramatic within the narrative. For the most part, however, Lewis uses the exploratory nature of the science fiction genre to play out the potential consequences of Hobbes’ ideas, while affirming his own position as espoused inThe Abolition of Man, and that of Aristotle. In both hisPolitics and The Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle speaks at length about life’s purpose being the instilling and pursuit of virtue (Aristotle 77). He believes that virtue is an end in and of itself. Lewis references Aristotle’s philosophy in The Abolition of Man, when he writes about the basic "doctrine of objective value” (Lewis 18) that provides the evaluation of truth. -

ABSTRACT C.S. Lewis and the Conversion of the Aeneas Story in the Ransom Trilogy Katherine Grace Hornell Directors: Phillip J. Donnelly, Ph.D. and Alan Jacobs, Ph.D. Many readers of C. S. Lewis’s writing consider his science fiction trilogy an odd divergence from his expected repertoire. Though Lewis’ "Ransom Trilogy" proves distinctive among his works, the books grow from the same deep roots in classical and medieval literary traditions that inform his other writings. Drawing from Virgil, Dante, and Arthurian legend to structure his narrative, Lewis unites ancient myth and modern fiction in order to illumine Classical stories with Christian faith. This thesis considers how Lewis’s science fiction draws on the features of secondary epic and its attendant meanings that appear in the Aeneid and in Arthurian stories. King Arthur was a legendary ruler of Britain whose life and deeds became the basis for a collection of tales known as the Arthurian legends. As the leading figure in British mythology, King Arthur is a national hero and a symbol of Britain's heroic heritage. But his appeal is not limited to Britain. The Arthurian story—with its elements of mystery, magic, love, war, adventure, betrayal, and fate—has touched the popular imagination and has become part of the world's shared mythology. The Celts blended stories of the warrior Arthur with those of much older mythological characters, such as Gwydion (pronounced GWID-yon), a Welsh priest-king. Old Welsh tales and poems place Arthur in traditional Celtic legends, including a hunt for an enchanted wild pig and a search for a magic cauldron, or kettle. In addition, Arthur is surrounded by a band of loyal followers who greatly resemble the disciples of Finn , the legendary Irish hero. -

Lewis addressed various issues involving sex and gender. The female characters in his various works of fiction are analyzed in an effort to determine if they are subordinate to their male counterparts or turned into stereotypes. It examines Lewis’s attempts to create distinctions between gender and sex and his conception of a gendered cosmic hierarchy as they appear in the Space Trilogy. It compares the value and the activities of the female and male villains and protagonists in The Chronicles of Narnia. There are five truths that Lewis commonly exhibits in each of his fictional works. These can be traced through his characters, plot, setting, and conversations in novels and other works of creative fiction.
