Following the spectacular success of Instruments of Happiness’ massive 150-guitar project at the recent Festival MNM (over 3,000 in the audience!), the group presents a more intimate vision of the electric guitar – the quartet. The group features Brady, Jonathan Barriault, Simon Duchesne and Francis Brunet-Turcotte. The group’s second CD - entitled The Happiness Handbook, features 6 new Canadian compositions by Tim Brady, Scott Godin, Emily Hall, Gordon Fitzell, Maxim McKinley and Jordon Nobles. Recorded in April 2017 at the legendary Montréal studio Hotel 2 Tango, the CD continues the group’s groundbreaking work, redefining chamber music for the electric guitar. This is the group’s second release on the US label, Starkland Records. American Tour: To support the CD, the group will be playing 3 concerts in the US in March/April - in New York (Spectrum – March 28), Pittsburgh (Warhol Museum – March 30) and Chicago (University of Illinois – April 5). Maybe the “field of cultural production” is nothing but a game board and each producer, promoter, buyer and seller is a piece on the board. We each fulfill our roles. The board doesn’t change much over time. Nor do the relative roles of the pieces. The game always needs someone at the top and someone at the bottom, but it also needs someone filling the various roles in between. If Bourdieu is right, we might see the Fiery Furnaces as the contemporary occupiers of the space once held by Joseph Byrd’s the United States of America. In 1968 the United States of America grated against the outer extremities of rock music, integrating sources as diverse as 19th century folk forms, Sousa-esque brass arrangements and experimental analog electronics (Gordon Marron is credited with playing ring modulator) into an au courant blend of pastoral psychedelia, blues, and proto-acid guitar leads. With their debut, Gallowsbird’s Bark, the Fiery Furnaces chafe against the current state of the art, interpolating 19th century folk forms, dada lyrics, and splice and dice arrangements into an au courant mix of earnest sonics, postmodern cool and post-acid guitar leads. Press Release: 15 YEARS OF ELAN On Monday, August 26, ELAN (English Language Arts Network) will be celebrating 15 years of serving the English-speaking arts community of Québec! ELAN was created in 2004, when 150 English-speaking artists from multiple artistic disciplines gathered to examine the state of the arts in Québec. After decades of decline and departures, the post-1995 referendum arts scene was experiencing a remarkable renaissance. Young artists were choosing to stay in Québec, and other artists were returning after living away. Artists, particularly musicians, from across Canada were flocking to Montréal because of cheap rents and a vibrant art scene, in what was described as the “Arcade Fire Effect”. ELAN’s first challenge was to make contact with thousands of artists working in multiple disciplines who were living in different parts of Montréal across different regions of Québec. Monthly schmoozers in popular bars proved a simple and effective way to connect artists. The RAEV (Recognizing Artists: Enfin Visibles!) project provided public visibility by creating profiles and videos about life in Québec for minority English-speaking artists. Guernica Essays published Minority Report, a collection of essays on the history of English-language artists in Québec. ELAN’s Made au Québec website aggregated an impressive volume of media coverage from around the world, demonstrating the impact of Québec’s English-speaking artists. ELAN has worked closely with communities around Québec in many ways. Arts Alive! Québec festivals (2014-2018) produced dozens of performances, presentations and hand-on-workshops, employing hundreds of artists in Hudson, Knowlton, Wakefield, Huntingdon, Québec City, and Montréal’s West Island. -

Kim Brackett Kim Brackett, and her husband Ira, own and operate Brackett Ranches, a cow-calf and stocker operation with the primary goal of producing superior quality calves, which are marketed as high-end feeder cattle or retained and finished in custom feedlots. Although based in Idaho, the main ranch straddles the border between Idaho and Oregon and consists of a large portion of federal lands. Understanding that consumers want reassurance regarding animal care and environmental stewardship, Brackett Ranches retains BQA certification is Source & Age Verified and operates as an approved NHTC Program. Brackett has a broad spectrum of leadership experience on a national, state and local level. Her experience includes: strategic planning, financial management, evaluation process, legislative work, employee development, crisis management and entrepreneurship. Brackett is a past chairman of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, as well as the Idaho Beef Council. She currently serves on the US Agriculture Statistics Advisory Committee, the National Beef Quality Assurance Advisory Board and the Idaho Cattle Association Board of Directors. In 2018, Brackett was awarded an Eisenhower Fellowship which provided her the opportunity to study abroad and research the role of regenerative agriculture in the cattle industry. Kim and Ira’s four children are the sixth generation to grow up on the family cattle ranch. -

The films chosen are a combination of portraits and actualités featuring superstars and luminaries such as Taylor Mead, Mary Woronov, Edie Sedgwick, Mario Montez, John Giorno, Marcel Duchamp, Marisol, Donovan, and Andy Warhol himself. This project honors the unwavering relevancy of the art and life of Andy Warhol by re-contextualizing his work in ways that resonate in contemporary culture. Five songwriter-composers representing a musical trajectory from the 1970s until today perform original scores to these rare Warhol selections. The composers and performers, selected by guest musical curator Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna), who also performs, include punk icons Tom Verlaine (Television) and Martin Rev (Suicide), Eleanor Friedberger (The Fiery Furnaces), and Bradford Cox (Deerhunter, Atlas Sound). -
