Gray* School of Biological Sciences, University of Sydney, 2006, NSW. Australia ABSTRACT. The effects of species of seagrass (Zostera capricorni and Posidonia australis) on spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the demography of estuarine populations of the palaemonid prawn Macrobrachium intermedium across 65 km of the Sydney region, southeastern Australia, were examined. Three estuaries were sampled in 1983 and 1984 to assess the magnitude of intra- and inter- estuary variability in demographic characteristics among populations. Species of seagrass had no effect on the demographic patterns of populations: differences in the magnitude and directions of change in abundances, recruitment, reproductive characteristics, size structures and growth were as great among populations within each species of seagrass as those between the 2 seagrasses Abiotic factors, such as the location of a meadow in relation to depth of water and distance offshore, and the interactions of these factors with recruiting larvae are hypothesised to have greater influence than the species of seagrass in determining the distribution and abundance of these prawns. Spatial and temporal heterogeneity in demography was similar across all spatial scales sampled: among meadows (50 m to 3 km apart) in an estuary and among meadows in all 3 estuaries (10 to 65 km apart). Variability in demographic processes among populations in the Sydney region was most likely due to stochastic factors extrinsic to the seagrasses then~selves.I conclude that the demography of seagrass-dwelling estuarine populations of M.

    EXPANSION OF DOLANS BAY MARINA. MP 10_0017 Submission by George Cotis in opposition to the proposal. In opposing this proposal, I would first like to object to the notification process. Despite the Department notifying residents and households of the exhibition of the proposal to expand Dolans Bay Marina, no notification was given to the occupiers of moorings in Dolans Bay. This is important on a number of grounds: Mooring occupiers may live outside the range of notification methods; There is no way of knowing which moorings may be directly or indirectly affected; Re-location of, or some other negative impact on moorings, is a likely consequence of the proposal. I made this known to the Departmentʼs officer early in the display process without any response. I therefore submit that the notification process is flawed in so far as people likely to be directly and adversely affected may have been excluded or overlooked. Further, the failure anywhere within the material which is on display is it made known which of the moorings in Dolans Bay are directly or indirectly affected, and what is anticipated may be the consequences. This denies the opportunity of informed comment. The expansion is opposed on the following grounds: No need for the expansion (other than the private gain for the proponent) is established. I will, at 1 below address the proponentʼs claims for need. In the event that this is not sufficient ground for refusal/denial, the following are offered as substantial and additional grounds: • The failure of the proposal to meet the tests of the Port Hacking Plan of Management • The failure to tie shore-side infrastructure upgrading with the on-water expansion.

    FACT SHEET W2 Recreational Waterways What is Zone W2 Recreational Waterways? W2 is a zone for waterways below the Mean High Water Mark. It seeks to provide for water based recreation and related uses, while still protecting the environmental and scenic qualities of the waterways and maintaining public access and navigability. What can I do in W2 Recreational Waterways? Moorings are permissible without consent in W2. The following uses can be carried out in W2 with development consent: Aquaculture; Boat launching ramps; Boat sheds; Charter tourism boating facilities; Environmental facilities; Environmental protection works; Flood mitigation works; Kiosks; Marinas; Mooring pens; Passenger transport facilities; Recreation facilities (outdoor); Water recreation structures All other uses that are not listed above are prohibited in the zone. To understand the exact planning meanings of these terms, refer to the dictionary in the draft plan. Where does W2 apply? The transfer of Zone 16 under the current SSLEP2006 has been divided into two separate zones: W1 – Natural Waterways and W2 – Recreational Waterways. The W2 zone applies to limited parts of the waterways, including parts of Yowie Bay, Dolans Bay, Burraneer Bay, Gunnamatta Bay, Sylvania Waters, a section of the Georges River, from Corea Street to the North-West point of Kangaroo Point and the two marinas at Sylvania.     1 Pittwater Nature Issue 4 February 2021 News and stories from Bushcarers, Wildlife carers, Community and home gardens The Pittwater River and the Barrenjoey Tombolo We hear a lot about Climate Change and Sea Level Rise. How could this affect our coast- line? It’s happened before. If we’d come here during the last Ice Age, we wouldn’t recognise the place at all. About 14 000 years ago, the Pacific coastline was about 20km further east. Our beaches, so familiar today, did not exist. From today’s Palm Beach, you’d be going a long way downhill for a surf. And you’d need a thick wetsuit. But that landscape would have been familiar to Aboriginal people. When the sea level was lower, streams flowed fast- er and eroded bedrock in river channels. The Hawkesbury River has a huge catchment. Its fast flow eroded the old Pleistocene bedrock channel between Barrenjoey and Box Head so that it is about 125 metres below the present sea level. Seismic investigations of bedrock drainage patterns in Pittwater contained a surprise, for this waterway which now widens out to merge into Broken Bay did not join the ancient Hawkesbury River drainage channels to enter the sea north of Barrenjoey until very recent times, geologically speaking. Marine Laboratory. Dew's (1959) revision of the Australian Serpulidae did not include the genus Spirorbis, but she noted that it was well represented and listed the references to the five species previously described from the area. MATERIAL AND METHODS All material was collected from the Posidonia sp. beds which extend from the C.S.I.R.O. Marine Laboratory's jetty across the entrance to Gunnamatta Bay in Port Hacking, Sydney.
