De clubkleuren zijn wit, donkerblauw en rood. Op 1 oktober 2011 zag ons ledenbestand er als volgt uit. (De aantallen tussen haakjes zijn die van 1 oktober 2010.) Natuurlijk. Dat hoort erbij als voorzitter. Al is dat niet het eerste wat je overweegt als je besluit om voorzitter te worden in april 2011. Waar je dan wel over na denk alvorens ja te zeggen? Over de mogelijkheden die je ziet, de prettige en betrokken mensen die je hebt leren kennen, de lol die je veel mensen kunt laten beleven door te kijken naar of het beoefenen van cricket, de impact die je in al je ijdelheid denkt te kunnen hebben, omdat je het leuk vindt dingen voor elkaar te krijgen. Dat soort overwegingen. Maar niet over het voorwoord van het jaarverslag. Was er dan geen twijfel? Geen mateloos irritante mensen en zaken waar je je bij tijd en wijle mateloos aan ergert? Jawel, maar gezegend met een vrouw met een chronisch roze bril, leer je toch vooral ook naar de mogelijkheden te kijken en zie je overal ook de positieve kant van in. Maar omdat ergernissen je je meestal makkelijk bijblijven, heb ik besloten dit jaar eens door te nemen aan de hand van een aantal ergernissen, allergieën. Onder het mom van Daniel Ofman: “Waar je je aan ergert bij een ander, is vaak een teveel van iets goeds waar je zelf het meest behoefte aan hebt”. (Volgens Ofman horen bij iedere persoon bepaalde kernkwaliteiten. Dit zijn eigenschappen die tot de kern van een persoon horen. Het zijn de specifieke eigenschappen die een persoon kenmerken. Sommige van deze kernkwaliteiten zijn zo sterk aanwezig dat ze juist een valkuil worden. Iemand die erg goed kan analyseren kan volgens dit model bijvoorbeeld neigen naar besluiteloosheid. Een valkuil is dus een karaktereigenschap die een doorgeschoten vorm is van een kernkwaliteit. Het tegenovergestelde van iemands valkuil is iemands uitdaging. Het tegenovergestelde van besluiteloosheid is daadkracht. De persoon die goed kan analyseren maar moet oppassen voor besluiteloosheid en moet dus werken aan zijn daadkracht. De uitdaging is dus een karaktereigenschap die het tegenovergestelde is van iemands valkuil. Deze kwaliteit is een goede aanvulling op iemands kernkwaliteit. Wanneer een ander doorschiet in een van zijn kernkwaliteiten, dan kan dat bij andere personen wrevel opwekken. In zo'n geval spreekt Ofman van allergie. Bijvoorbeeld: Iemand die heel goed kan analyseren en plannen kan allergisch zijn voor improviseren en impulsief gedrag. De allergie is dus datgene dat iemand met een bepaalde kernkwaliteit als lastig ervaart. Daarnaast is deze allergie een doorgeschoten vorm van de uitdaging: impulsiviteit is immers ook doorgeschoten daadkracht. Volgens Ofman kun je daarom veel leren over jezelf wanneer je je aan bepaalde mensen ergert. De allergie is dus de doorgeschoten vorm van iemands uitdaging. Het is de karaktereigenschap die iemand met een bepaalde kernkwaliteit als lastig ervaart.) ) Het jaar gekenschetst door drie uitspraken, met daarachter welk kwaliteit – valkuil – uitdaging – allergiereeksje daarachter zit: 1. Er is nooit iemand die bereid is zijn handen uit te steken, leden komen alleen maar om een potje te spelen (beheersen – control freak – afwachtend/laissez faire ‐ geen betrokkenheid) Natuurlijk zijn er van die momenten dat je je afvraagt of er niet eens iemand anders dan het bekende rijtje een bardienst wil draaien en heb je het gevoel dat je er alleen voorstaat. Aan de andere kant is het ook vaak een kwestie van vragen buiten het bekende kringetje en het durven loslaten. Zo zijn er begin dit jaar naar Voorburg Cricket Club Jaarverslag 2011 6 aanleiding van een enquete twee nieuwe bestuursleden bij gekomen. Deze nieuwe besttuursleden vervingen (Lid van Verdienste) Wouter Steffelaar, die de hamer na acht jaar overdroeg, en Dave Hardy. Zo hadden we opeens een barteam met 25 (deels al bekende) mensen die best wel eens een dienstje wilde draaien. En zo hebben voor en tijdens de ODI’s tegen Kenia in september bijna alle teams hun steentje bijgedragen aan het (un)coveren van het graswicket, het uitzetten van het veld en het draaien van bardiensten. Tevens hebben allerlei sponsoren handjes vol geholpen door hun financiële bijdrage. Naast trouwe sponsors als Catch of the Day, Tim de Leede Sports, Sandedruk, Promotional Printing, deWaardKramer, d’Ancona Belastingadviseurs, Zwanenberg, De Vries Elektro, Faxion, City Silks en Party Rental Company hebben nieuwe sponsoren als Haghevoorde, Shell, Pitch en Putt en Tradewinds het ons mogelijk gemaakt extra dingen te doen. Hiermee werden bijvoorbeeld Malcolm Waller, John Cheadle en Matt Opie betaald, coaches waar we dit jaar in alle geledingen heel veel plezier van hebben gehad. 2. Vroeger was alles beter (enthousiast ‐ roekeloos ‐ bedachtzaam ‐ halsstarrig) Het is goed om historisch besef te hebben, anders vind je het wiel steeds opnieuw uit. Aan de andere kant moet je niet blijven hangen in het verleden en ook de nieuwe ontwikkelingen willen zien. Bij de jeugd zijn de ontwikkelingen bijvoorbeeld bijzonder positief. Er zijn nog nooit zoveel vertegenwoordigers van VCC bij de nationale teams geweest, VCC heeft de op drie na grootste jeugdopleiding van Nederland, de Nederlandse U15 (met drie VCC’ers en een VCC‐coach) werd in Schotland Europees kampioen, de U12 werd Nederlands kampioen, Bas de Leede maakte (zij het als invaller) op zijn elfde zijn debuut in VCC 1 en de cricketweek was misschien wel hèt hoogtepunt van het cricketjaar. Aan het einde van het jaar kreeg Philip Kingma bovendien nog eens de eervolle uitnodiging om zes maanden te trainen aan de cricketacademie van Ben Williams in Nieuw‐Zeeland.

The decline had perhaps begun as early as the 1999 World Cup final, and peaked during the 2003 World Cup tournament and it became more obvious in the aftermath of the twin series defeats against India at home in early 2004.
