    The Russian Church, Religious Liberty and the World Council of Churches * MICHAEL BOURDEAUX Introduction The foes of peace seek to achieve their ends by a third world war, by destroying millions of peaceful, innocent people with nuclear warheads, by annihilating their cities and the treasures of their centuries-old cultural achievements. Thus the prim­ ary factor is the insatiable craving of the USA for new military gains and the economic and political domination of the world . Yet no matter how important for the Americans are their plans of global economic and political domination, no matter how strong the dollar, these are not the basis of their decision to employ their bombs. The overriding factor is their fear of socialism, which marches forward inexorably. These words were written not earlier this year in the worsening East­ West conflict; they are those of a spokesman for the Russian Orthodox Church printed in January 1948 in the Journal of the Moscow Patriar­ chate. I propose in this lecture to examine changing - or in some cases un­ .~hanging - Soviet attitudes to the world outside, particularly as seen through the relations of the Orthodox Church with one organisation, the World Council of Churches. I shall look at the complementary policy from the side of the WCC, narrowing the focus in the later part of the paper to the debate of the last decade and a half on religious liberty. With commendable breadth of vision, typical of its early days, leaders of the WCC had tried to be in contact with· the Russian Church even before the founding assembly in 1948.

Revival and reformation, and 2. division-wide evangelistic advance. The implementation on a division-wide basis in the present quadrennium of plans for evangelistic advance will include and embrace every worker and member and every department of the church. We have set a goal of 20,000 baptisms for the quadrennium, which will result in a church membership by December of 1969 of 90,000. The various departments of the church have been established to assist the church and to make its soul-winning endeavors more effective. Individuals and congregations around our Diocese have considered: making a donation to a local Dementia Charity, or through the Diocese to Alzheimer Scotland how we might make our churches more welcoming to those suffering from Dementia becoming involved in Dementia support in our localities offering the resources of our buildings or people for events related to Dementia support.     The 2010 Patronal Festival Sermon Preacher: The Rt Revd John Pritchard, Bishop of Oxford “Turn from these worthless things to the living God” When Paul and Barnabas came to Lystra the crowds shouted, 'The gods have come down to us in human form.' Strangely that's never happened to me! Of course it helped that Paul had just healed a man crippled from birth, and my arrival in Oxford was a little less dramatic. Mind you, I wasn't taken in by something written by a predecessor of mine in the 1830s who said, 'I took this diocese solely because of its smallness, quietness and the little anxiety it need give me.' That's not how I'd describe the diocese of Oxford today! Indeed another predecessor, Bp Patrick Rodger, was once standing in the loo in our Diocesan Church House (like you do) and he said to the man standing beside him, 'You know, I think this is the only time in my life when I really know what I'm doing, and when I stand a pretty good chance of finishing the job!' I know what he meant! Ministry is complicated, the social context is bewildering, public understanding of what we're about is at an all time low. And yet… all is well. Because God is well. Paul and Barnabas came to Lystra with a clear goal – to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord. Unfortunately, having to stop and heal someone led to that bit of misunderstanding I mentioned before – they were mistaken for the two deities worshipped locally, Zeus and Hermes.
