There are constant and unavoidable interactions of mental, emotional, behavioral and physical problems that require integration of primary care and behavioral health. What is the current landscape of primary care delivery of behavioral health services? • Integrated care is being implemented in practices of all types • Payment and workforce shortages remain significant barriers to scaling implementation of integrated care • More integration in urban, larger practices compared to rural and smaller practices, but rural-urban difference may be mostly explainable by practice size1 o ~ 45% PCPs are co-located with a BH provider (with the rates in urban areas close to twice that of rural areas).     Hippocampal Neurophysiology During Exploratory Behaviour and Sleep in Rats Heterozygous for the Psychiatric Risk Gene Cacna1c Edward Richard Morrell A Thesis Presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2020 Word Count: 43,582 Abstract Genome-wide association studies reveal that calcium channel gene variants confer risk for psychiatric disorders across diagnostic categories. One consistently implicated gene is CACNA1C, a gene encoding the α1 pore-forming subunit of the L-type calcium channel. Recent rodent research highlights an important role for Cacna1c in hippocampal synaptic plasticity and related cognition, yet little is known about the effects of reduced Cacna1c gene dosage on hippocampal neurophysiology in vivo. Using tetrodes targeted to the dorsal CA1 I recorded single unit and local field potential activity in rats heterozygous for Cacna1c during free exploration and rest. Cacna1c heterozygous rats displayed enlarged place-fields and an associated reduction in place-cell spatial information content during runs on a linear track in a familiar and novel orientation, while place-cell activity during exploration of a novel open-field was intact. In addition, while 6-10Hz theta and 25-140Hz gamma rhythms were comparable in frequency and power in heterozygotes, their dependence on locomotion was compromised. Phase- amplitude coupling between theta and slow-gamma was also attenuated in Cacna1c heterozygous rats running on the track in a novel orientation. Hippocampal recordings at rest revealed intact 120-250Hz sharp-wave ripple oscillations, yet an enhanced participation of individual neurons in sharp-wave ripple events in Cacna1c heterozygotes. Despite the elevation in ripple-associated activity, coactivity between cell pairs during sharp-wave ripple events was markedly impaired.

Walley, M.D., M.Sc. Alcohol use is common among people infected with HIV and may contribute to adverse consequences such as reduced adherence to treatment regimens and increased likelihood of risky sexual behaviors. Therefore, researchers and clinicians are looking for treatment approaches to reduce harmful alcohol consumption in this population. However, clinical trials of existing treatment models are scarce. A literature review identified only 11 studies that included HIV­infected patients with past or current risky alcohol use and which targeted alcohol use and other health behaviors. Four studies focusing on HIV­infected participants with alcohol problems found mixed effects on adherence and on alcohol use. Five clinical trials included at least 10 percent of HIV­infected subjects who use alcohol; of these, only one reported significant evidence of a favorable impact on alcohol consumption. Finally, two trials targeting alcohol users at high risk for HIV infection identified treatment effects that were not sustained. Taken together, these findings provide limited evidence of the benefit of behavioral interventions in this population. Nevertheless, these studies give some guidance for future interventions in HIV­infected patients with alcohol problems. Abstract: The adult human brain consists of approximately a hundred billion neurons, which are connected via synapses. The pattern and strength of the synaptic connections are constantly changing (synaptic plasticity), and these changes are considered to underlie learning, memory, and personality. Many psychiatric disorders have been related to disturbances in synaptogenesis and subsequent plasticity. In this review, we summarize findings of synaptic disturbance and its involvement in the pathogenesis and/or pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. We will focus on schizophrenia, because this condition has a high proven heritability, which offers more unambiguous insights into the biological origins of not only schizophrenia but also related psychiatric disorders. Western culture reinforces the belief that madness and mental illness are synonymous, from the television we watch, the images we share endlessly on social media, to the very language we use when we confront someone whom we believe is mentally ill. All previous platforms of communication illustrate our constructed view of the mentally ill. The conflation of the terms madness and mental illness occurs mainly because the visual and non-visual culture of madness is riddled with misunderstandings. Misunderstandings that have spread themselves through both the visual and non-visual aspects of contemporary culture by way of psychiatric photography. This thesis examines the visual culture of psychiatric photography that was used in the diagnosis and treatment of mentally ill patients in English, French and North American asylums largely in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
