Objectives: This work aims to determine the pharmacological mechanism of its antihypertensive virtue, to identify and isolate the major compound and to elucidate its chemical structure. Method: The powder of dried leaves of C. ovata was extracted by maceration with 90% ethanol. The ethanol solution was depigmented by activated charcoal then filtered on Whatman’s filter paper and evaporated to dryness. This ethanol crude extract was dissolved in distilled water and then successively partitioned with dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and butanol. Two serials of column chromatography on silica gel eluted by an increasing polarity solvent system and some preparative chromatography were used to isolate the major compound of the butanol fraction. The chemical structure of the purified compound was elucidated using some spectrometric methods UPLC–MS, UPLC–UV, 1D and 2D NMR.

  • Jade Plant, Crassula Ovata
A Horticulture Information article from the Wisconsin Master Gardener website, posted 11 Jan 2010 Jade Plant, Crassula ovata Crassula ovata is a common houseplant that is usually called jade plant, or less frequently referred to as friendship plant, money plant, or silver dollar plant. Previously classifi ed as C. argentea, C. portulaca and C. obliqua, it is still occasionally sold under these other, older (and incorrect) names. This species is just one of about 300 in a diverse genus, part of the orpine family (Crassulaceae), about half of which are native to southern Africa. The name crassula means thick or fat, referring to the fl eshy nature of the genus, and ovata means egg-shaped, referring to the shape of the leaves of this species. C. ovata is a prominent component of valley thicket vegetation of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. The very similar C. arborescens, which has almost spherical blue-gray leaves with a distinct waxy bloom, is found in a different area, Jade plant is easily grown as a houseplant. in the Little Karoo and Central Karoo. It has compact, rounded heads of pink fl owers. The Khoi and other Africans used the roots for food, grated and cooked, eaten with thick milk. They also used the leaves for medicinal purposes. Jade plant is an easy-to-grow succulent that stores water in its leaves, stems, and roots. It has been used as an indoor ornamental throughout the world, and a landscape plant in mild climates. It makes a good houseplant as it grows well in the restricted root space of containers, is relatively slow- growing, likes the warm, dry conditions found in most homes, and tolerates neglect.

Plant Growth and Root Zone Management of Greenhouse Grown Succulents Jonathan Bundy Snelson Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Horticulture Holly Scoggins, Chair Joyce Latimer Erik Ervin 19 April, 2012 Blacksburg, VA Keywords: fertilizer, media, soil moisture, plant growth regulators Plant Growth and Root Zone Management of Greenhouse Grown Succulents Jonathan B. Snelson ABSTRACT Effects of media, soil moisture, fertility rate, and plant growth regulators on plant growth were investigated for 13 taxa of succulents. Media: Liners were grown in five common greenhouse substrates: 80% peat, 60% bark + 30% peat moss, 80% pine bark/20% Permatil (v/v), 100% composted pine bark, or whole tree substrate until market ready. Overall, higher percentage bark mixes yielded smaller plants, with lower shoot dry weights, shoot heights and widths. Soil Moisture: Liners were potted into a 60% bark/30% peat soilless potting mix. In group 1 , irrigation to container capacity occurred when volumetric soil moisture content fell below 30%, 20%, or 10%,. Group two (seven species) irrigation thresholds were shifted to 35%, 25%, and 15%. Effects of irrigation rate were significant in three of the 13 species studied, and those effects were species-specific. Fertility Rate: Liners were potted into60% bark/30% peat substrate. Fertility reatments in group were 0, 50, 100, or 200 mg.L-1 nitrogen. Group 2 plants received treatments of 50, 150, 250, or 350 mg.L-1 nitrogen. Four of the 11 species studied were affected by nitrogen rate, with rates up to 200 mg.L-1 generally producing the largest plants.

A GUIDE TO THE TYPES OF SUCCULENTS ID CARDS © 2020 SUCCULENTS AND SUNSHINE, LLC ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ALL RIGHTS LLC AND SUNSHINE, SUCCULENTS © 2020 IDEAL LIGHT Full Sun: This means the plant likes a lot of light and can handle some direct sunlight. This does not mean it can handle heat -- that varies from succulent to succulent. Generally keep succulents shaded in the afternoon when temperatures are hottest. If you are growing succulents indoors, “full sun” succulents will need a grow light running several hours per day in order to prevent stretching and maintain color. Partial Sun: These succulents like quite a bit of sun, but don’t generally want direct sun all day. Still protect them from heat and avoid late afternoon light. Morning light is ideal. Indoors, you’ll want to use a grow light a few hours a day to prevent stretching and maintain color. FOR MORE DETAILS PLEASE VISIT: SUCCULENTSANDSUNSHINE.COM/TOSLIGHT © 2020 SUCCULENTS AND SUNSHINE, LLC ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ALL RIGHTS LLC AND SUNSHINE, SUCCULENTS © 2020 IDEAL LIGHT Shade: Avoid giving these succulents direct sunlight. Morning sun may be ok, but not for very long. Indoors, you may want to supplement with a grow light for a couple hours a day to maintain really compact shape. Indoor: While all succulents can technically be grown indoors, succulents with this icon will grow well without a grow light. You may notice a little stretching, but not as much as a full sun succulent. If you don’t have grow lights, consider getting a succulent with this icon for your indoor garden.
