A MESSAGE FROM THE KEY 4: The Scouting program in Orange County helps young people be Prepared. For Life.™ The value of that preparation lives in the heart of every person involved in Scouting who has ever overcome one of life’s challenges, and it helps inspire a lifetime of character and service. Scouting teaches leadership at a young age and the taking of personal responsibility when it may not be cool or even politically correct to practice these virtues. But these are the values that built our country, its participative government and its great legacy of charitable giving and service to the less fortunate. More than ever, they are needed to continue our country’s arc of growth, freedom and opportunity for all. And very importantly, if we can form more good men and women at an early age, think of the impact it will have on our world. All personal development at any age is to be prized but our youth in the Scouting program have the opportunity to practice these critical values for an entire lifetime, maybe 50, 60, 70 years or more! Think of the ever widening virtuous circles that occur as our young men and women touch others as they move through life being great role models of responsibility and leadership. As Scouting in Orange County moves into its second century, we recognize the important role we can play in helping prepare our county’s young people to face and overcome the challenges before them. While most people avoid obstacles, Scouting teaches young people to face them head-on. As we look to a new century of Scouting achievements, and instilling the values of honor and integrity in the youth in our program, in turn, our nation will look to the youth involved in Scouting to lead us forward into a bright future. Orange County Council will continue to ready those youth to become leaders of strength and character- Leaders who are Prepared. For Life. ™ Nathan O. Rosenberg William Baker Chairman Commissioner Rob Neal Jeffrie A. Herrmann Executive Vice Chairman President/Scout Executive Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America Mission and History: The mission of the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America is to serve an increasing number of youth by marshaling community resources to develop tomorrow’s leaders through adventure and fun activities and instill values and teach life skills. Founded in 1910 and chartered by Congress in 1920, the Orange County Council continues to be the largest youth organization in the county. Although many see the Boy Scouts as a program based on camping, hiking and fishing, truly we are an educational organization which uses these activities as a means to deliver our message of developing leadership, taking personal responsibility, ethical decision-making and giving to others. In 2011, we served youth in Orange County through traditional and nontraditional programs. Traditional Scouting programs include the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing programs and the non-traditional programs include Learning for Life character education and Exploring, a workforce development program. We also own and operate four outdoor facilities that serve a larger number of youth throughout Southern California. These programs are delivered by 35 full-time professional staff, 31-full time support staff, 165 part-time staff (a majority of part-time staff are hired to assist during summer camp programs) and 10,690 registered adult volunteers who contributed over a million volunteer hours to Scouting programs. 2011 In 2011, we achieved the following throughout our programs and facilities: Provided 26,150 youth with quality programs to Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts; Exploring; and Venturing. Provided 5,000 under-served students with in-school, values based education through Learning for Life in the 2010-2011 school year. Delivered programs and camps to over 33,000 young people through outdoor facilities owned and operated by the Orange County Council (outdoor facilities include the Newport Sea Base, Oso Lake, Schoepe Scout Reservation at Lost Valley and The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center). In addition, we provided programs to 37 youth serving organizations and 50 schools at The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center. Provided 2,500 youth and 1,500 adults with Day Camp programs across Orange County. Managed 10,690 registered volunteers who contributed 1,160,000 volunteer hours to Scouting programs. Awarded 663 young men with the rank of Eagle Scout, an award attained by 3 to 4 % of all Boy Scouts in America and by 7 % of all Boy Scouts in Orange County. Orange County Council had the largest self-identified Hispanic youth members among all the other Councils in the country and is the fourth largest among all the Councils in the nation for both Hispanic youth and total priority markets.
