From the wealthy teenager who inherited the estate to the Hall’s use as an RAF billet, Beningbrough has been shaped by the many people who lived here and is still evolving today. The architecture and collections on the ground floor tell the story of a country house, while the Saloon Galleries host changing exhibitions of contemporary and traditional artwork in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery. In the interactive spaces on the top floor, explore how art is made and have a go yourself. The garden is also enjoying a revival. Alongside lawns, formal gardens, herbaceous borders and a walled kitchen garden, look out for the Pergola, one in a series of planned new gardens by international designer Andy Sturgeon. Trip the light fantastic to the home where modern living began. Cragside was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity, making it a wonder of the Victorian age. What started as a modest country retreat for engineer and inventor William Armstrong and his wife Margaret became the most technologically advanced house of its time with every home comfort imaginable, as well as being an Arts and Crafts masterpiece. Outside, Lord and Lady Armstrong were equally ambitious with the garden and grounds, engineering the landscape and experimenting with plants on a massive scale. Rocky crags, tumbling water, open lakes, towering North American conifers and great drifts of rhododendrons create changing scenery. Note: challenging terrain and distances outside, stout footwear essential.

Once a Tudor fort, it was converted into a holiday home for Country Life editor Edward Hudson by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1903. A year on from a major conservation project, you can experience the castle through a new exhibition. Tucked behind York Minster, Treasurer’s House is not as it first appears. Wallington is a 5,260-hectare (13,000-acre) working estate gifted to you by Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, socialist MP and ‘illogical Englishman’. The woodland gardens are full of wildlife and ancient trees; you can visit the hide to spot red squirrels or take the river walk where you may see otters or crayfish. There are lots of walks, or you can explore the estate using the family-friendly cycle trail. The three outdoor play spaces capture the spirit of the adventurous Trevelyan children. Throughout the year the walled garden and Edwardian conservatory are bursting with colour. The Trevelyans’ informal home is full of treasured collections and curiosities: make yourself at home and find out about this unconventional family.

Middlethorpe Hall is a country house just outside York, built of mellow red brick during the reign of William III in 1699 and set in eight hectares (20 acres) of gardens. Furnished with antiques and paintings, Middlethorpe still has the look and feel of a well-kept manor house. The comfortable bedrooms are complemented by elegant public rooms, including the drawing room and wood- panelled dining room, where imaginative meals are served. The gardens include a rose garden, a walled garden and a meadow leading to a tree- ringed lake. In the spa, which has a small gym, indoor swimming pool and sauna, the trained therapists use Aromatherapy Associates products. Note: access is for guests staying at the hotel, using the spa or enjoying luncheon, afternoon tea and dinner. Children over the age of six welcome. Groups may book accommodation or dining to enjoy the gardens.
