Chopin, Kate, 1851-1904 from Literature Online biography Kate Chopin (1850-1904) was an American writer who came to prominence at the fin de siècle with her short stories, many about Louisiana life. She was admired in her lifetime chiefly for her 'charming' depictions of 'local colour', and the work now regarded as her great achievement, the novel The Awakening (1899), was accorded a decidedly mixed reception. Since the late 1960s this novel has come to be regarded as a classic of American literature and is a staple of literature and women's studies university courses, though it is not yet very familiar to general readers. Bearing in mind The Awakening , the story of a woman's sense of oppression in conventional marriage and her burning desire (not uncomplicatedly fulfilled) for liberty, modern critics tend to value most highly those of Chopin's short stories that, in her lifetime, were regarded as distasteful and even unrespectable, dealing with sexuality and the less than fairytale aspects of relationships between the sexes. Chopin was not a campaigning author, for all that she foregrounded socially uncomfortable issues in a way that was considered 'advanced': though some of her characters chafe at conventional expectations, she carefully presented herself as a mother and homemaker, writing only in the interstices of domestic responsibilities; and her treatment of class and race is not always as enlightened as her modern critics would like. Sue Asbee has commented that 'there is a sense in which it is disappointing that such a forward- thinking woman campaigned for nobody's rights'. -

The Story of an Hour (1894) Kate Chopin Kate Chopin was a forgotten American voice until her literary reputation was resuscitated by critics in the 1950s. Today her novel The Awakening (1899) the story of a sensual, determined woman who insists on her independence, is widely read and highly honored, a feminist work which was decidedly ahead of its time. Born Katherine O'FIaherty into an upper-middle-class family in St. Louis, she married Oscar Chopin when she was twenty and moved to her husband's home in Louisiana. In the ten years that she resided in Louisiana she was aware of and receptive to Creole, Cajun, black, and Indian cultures, and when she later came to write fiction, she would incorporate people from these cultures in her work, especially her short stories. When her husband died as a young man, Kate Chopin returned to St. Louis with her six children. Financially secure, she began writing fiction as best she could while rearing her children. She is a good example of an American realist, someone trying to represent life the way it actually is lived, and she acknowledged her debt to the contemporary French naturalists Emile Zola and Guy de Maupassant. Does the psychological ambivalence dramatized in "The Story of an Hour" ring true or uncomfortably real when we consider honestly our own feelings? Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death. It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing. -

It was through a historical background combined with the importance of literature that the establishment of that new ideal of woman was created. Kate Chopin was one of the first American authors to show the reality of women in their traditional spheres but moving to the rise of a new female identity. By means of her short fiction, Kate Chopin developed the New Woman ideal, which was embodied by the fictional characters she used in her short stories.
