Submitted to the University of Cambridge September 2017 Abstract Title: British Masculinities Beyond Patriarchy, 1689-1702 Author: Owen Anderson Brittan This research project examines multiple constructions of masculinity during the reign of William III (1689-1702), a period often overlooked by historians of masculinity. Historical interpretations of masculinity in the early modern period have focused heavily on patriarchal models of masculinity and the accompanying gendered relationships and expectations associated with the household. Recently, historians have turned their attention to cultures of politeness and civility in the public sphere. Yet masculinity in this period was more diverse than these prominent models allow because it could be constructed through a number of different processes. Using normative literature and experiential records, this project seeks to add to the scholarship on non- patriarchal constructions, understandings, and norms of masculinity. Four non-domestic settings were particularly prominent and recurrent throughout the autobiographical sources and normative literature of the period: the military, government and public service, commerce, and religion. The norms associated with each setting were complex. Moreover, these norms sometimes varied between settings in ways that created tension. Negotiating masculinity in accordance with the normative expectations of various settings could be taxing. Each of these four settings constitutes a chapter in this dissertation, along with a final chapter that shifts the focus beyond the British Isles to how British colonists, travellers, and traders experienced the foreign hardships, climates, and peoples of the geographical periphery, which often necessitated further alternative constructions of masculinity. -

At school he was taught by Brian Manners who had also studied with Linstead in the Department of Music just after the Second World War. Both were also private pupils of George Linstead. On leaving Sheffield, Christopher Powell became a Research Student at Emmanuel College, Cambridge where, as well as undertaking musicological research, he supervised well over a hundred undergraduates in the Music Tripos for various Colleges of the University of Cambridge. In 1973, he moved to Cardiff as Lecturer in Music at the Welsh College of Music and Drama (now the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama). He was on the music staff at RWCMD for the next twenty-five years holding a number of posts including Head of Academic Studies and Associate Director of Music. He retired on his fiftieth birthday and now spends his time between his homes in Cardiff and Nice. EDITORIAL JANUARY 1983 Vol. 5, No.I For many years the date 1984 has had an Orwellian significance. One not to be thought of lightly, and indeed a date to be avoided, if that were possible. However, time changes things, and today 1984 is just another year on the calendar, now only twelve months away. To musicians and music lovers though the year has consider- able significance, Fifty years ago, in 1934, the deaths occurred of three of our greatest composers - Elgar, Delius and Holst. Fifty years on we shall mark the anniversary by a consideration of their achievements, and the Elgar Society, and no doubt otiier org anisations too, will be arranging a number of events to mark the year. Both public and private organisations will have an added incentive to study afresh the work and influence of these great composers, and it is hoped that the musical year will be the rich er as a result. -

Individual and Institution in the Musical Life of Leeds 1900-1914 Robert Demaine Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of York Department of Music July 2000 Abstract In the years immediately before the First World War the city of Leeds enjoyed a rich and diverse musical life which has remained largely unchronicled thanks in part to an emphasis on London in much English musical history. This thesis attempts to redress the balance by charting the development of local institutions in the fields of choral, orchestral and chamber music which were created by the industry and dedication of a small number of outstanding individuals, now long-forgotten, whose efforts in the cause of Leeds music are placed within their social and historical context. The influence of the Leeds Triennial Festival, that cornerstone of the city's musical reputation in the latter half of the nineteenth century, is considered along with the work of the two leading choral societies which dominated so much of Leeds musical life at the time. Pioneering enterprises, such as those to establish a permanent municipal orchestra in the city and a regular series for the performance of contemporary chamber music, are examined in detail against the backdrop of a society undergoing fundamental change. It is often assumed that the First World War brought a violent and sudden end to what might be viewed as a golden age in English music. This thesis will show how the forces of change were already being experienced within local musical institutions which were attempting to come to terms with them even as the apocalyptic events of 1914 were approaching. -

EDITORIAL In rdbruary f6is year 1 was'ludky enough to spend four weeks in India enjoying the warmth and sunshine, and seeing something of life in that vast sub-continent. When I arrived home there was a considerabfe amount ot-correspondence to be dealt with, and it did not help to find that of all the letters from members of the Society only one contained a stamped addressed envelope. As I was also involved in the preparation of this issue of the Journal I have not had time to reply to all the letters - and as far as I am concerned those enclosing a stamped addressed envelope will always have priority. Having got that off my chest I have some better news. I understand that the New Directory of Members' Interests is at long last about to appear. Its preparation has been a much bigger task than was anticipated, but the fact that all the information is now on computer means that future updates can be produced much more easily. We are indebted to Bob Vine and the small band of dedicated workers who have been involved in its production. Work on indexing the 1851 Census continues, but unfortunately the rate of publication is limited by the amount of cash available and is not as fast as we would like. Volume 2 of the Northumberland index, covering the Seghill area should however be ready soon after you read this. NEWS IN BRIEF National Soldiers Index Mr J.D. Beckett, of 34 Eastwood Avenue, Droylsden, MANCHESTER, is compiling a National Soldiers Index, the main object of which is to direct the searcher to the regiment of the soldier concerned. -

222 Hymnody In Lancashire by Ken F. Bowden This article was written and submitted in 1975, to mark the centenary of the appearance of The Burnley Tunebook, although its publication has been subject to regrettable delay. Mr. Bowden is a Life Member of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland, a Methodist local preacher and Librarian of Bacup, Lancashire, with a special interest in local history and local hymnology. It gives us special pleasure to publish research of this character. NE hundred years ago in September 1875, Thomas Simpson O issued The Burnley Tunebook, a compilation of 383 hymn tunes, of which 26 were his own compositions. He regarded it as a "humble effort to supply a collection of original tunes, etc . the greater number of which are new". Many of the tunes bear names reflecting their Lancastrian origin. Thomas Simpson himself has a Towneley Hall set to "0 worship the King" and Habergham Eaves for "0 day of rest and gladness" whilst the name Burnley itself is given to the sole tune in the 8.6.8.6.8.8.8.8. metre, which accompanies "Salva tion! 0 the joyful sound". It has however, the following footnote: "The first part of this tune being of Common Metre, may be sung apart from the Chorus, as an ordinary C.M.". The Burnley Tunebook in fact saw the first publication of Henry J. E. Holmes' tune Pater Omnium which derives its name from the last line of the hymn to which it was originally set: Footsore and faint to Thee we cry, Father of all, be very nigh. -

‘LET THE PEOPLE SING!’: ASPECTS OF CHOIR CULTURE FROM TYNE TO TWEED, 1852-1989 WILLIAM ROY LARGE Submitted to the University of Newcastle for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy International Centre for Music Studies February 2020 Abstract This study traces the history of choral singing in Newcastle and its environs from 1852 to 1989. Following the Music Festival of 1842 there was a lull in the musical life of Newcastle until the arrival of William Rea, appointed as organist to the town corporation. Galvanizing musical activity, Rea was at the centre of a vigorous, if sometimes turbulent, choral scene in the last decades of the century. In the 20th century Armstrong College, then part of Durham University, afforded the scholarly environment for the establishment of the Newcastle Bach Choir, espousing the music of Bach and contemporary British composers. Traditional ‘oratorio’ choirs also flourished until waning interest in their basic repertory saw their demise in the 1970s and 1980s. The two World Wars had meanwhile caused some choirs to cease their activities, either temporarily or permanently, while others strengthened their presence, ensuring the continuity of choral music performance. The second half of the century saw the founding of new choirs, including the Cappella Novocastriensis, strongly linked to the University, and two choirs formed to support orchestras wishing to perform choral works. Alongside this mainstream choral activity, male-voice choirs developed, a number rooted in their works communities or nonconformist and temperance environments. Their repertory, aims and organisation contrasted strongly with the established mixed-voice choirs. The choral life of Northumberland centred on one or two regional ‘clusters’; the comparative isolation of Berwick upon Tweed, the most northerly Northumbrian town, encouraged strong indigenous musical activity.
