Six Shakespeares in Search of an Author Reviewed by Michael Dudley My Shakespeare: The Authorship Controversy: Experts Examine the Arguments for Bacon, Neville, Oxford, Marlowe, Mary Sidney, Shakspere, and Shakespeare. Edited by William D. Leahy. Brighton, UK, Edward Everett Root, 2017. (hardback $79.95 US, Kindle $15.99) common objection levelled against authorship doubters is that the number of candidates claimed for the authorship of the Shakespeare A canon makes it highly unlikely any of them could have been the true author. In My Shakespeare readers are given the opportunity to decide the matter for themselves by considering five alternative candidates, as well as traditional and novel interpretations of William from Stratford. This approach has several significant precedents, including Shakespeare and His Rivals by George McMichael and Edgar M. Glenn, and The Shake- speare Claimants by H.N. Gibson (both published in 1962), as well as The Shakespeare Controversy by Warren Hope and Kim Holston (1992/2009). Al- lowing partisans for each candidate to make their case rather than having it presented and assessed by a singular authorial voice sets My Shakespeare apart from these predecessors. In his introduction, editor William Leahy (who also edited 2010’s Shakespeare and His Authors) states that each of the candidates in the book are “presented as equal” (ix) in the spirit of deter- mining not that “we are right, but to find out if we are” (xi). Accordingly, open-minded readers will find much of interest here, even if one concedes that certain evidence, assumptions or conventions may have been long ago rejected by Oxfordian researchers. -

ENGLISH 8720: Theater and Neighborhood in Shakespeare’s London Spring Semester 2013 Professor Christopher Highley Classroom: Scott Lab N0044 Class time: Fri 11:10-2:05 Office: Denney 558; 292-1833 Office Hours: Wed 10-2 and by appointment [email protected] Class Description: This class will examine the different theatrical neighborhoods of Early Modern London in which the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries were performed. We will pay special attention to three neighborhoods: Southwark, on the south-bank of the River Thames, was home to the Globe, the Rose, and several other ampitheaters; Blackfriars, an ex-monastic Liberty inside the walls of the City, was home to indoor theaters; and Clerkenwell, northwest of the City, was the location of the Fortune and Red Bull playhouses. When and for what reasons was playing first attracted to these areas? What political, economic, demographic, and social conditions allowed playing to survive here? What local neighborhood pressures shaped the identity and fortunes of these venues? Did the location of a playhouse determine the composition of its audience and thus the kinds of plays performed? Did playwrights build awareness of the playhouse neighborhood into their plays? We will read representative plays from each of the theaters we study (for exxmple, Jonson's The Alchemist, and Beaumont’s Knight of the Burning Pestle for the Blackfriars), but we will also devote much of our attention to the social and theatrical documents that reveal how theaters functioned within specific neighborhoods. We will look at the documents of royal, metropolitan, and ecclesiastical authorities, along with petitions of neighborhood residents, contemporary accounts of playgoing, and anti-theatrical tracts. -
The Dramatic Space of Hamlet's Theatre

In my paper I investigate the use of the dramatic space in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The tragedy will be observed with the method of “pre-performance criticism,” which first and foremost makes use of the several potentials a play contains and puts on display before an actual performance; it offers, also in the light of the secondary literature, various ways of interpretation, resulting from the close-reading of the play and considers their possible realizations in the space of the stage both from the director’s and the actor’s point of view, including the consequences the respective lines of interpretation may have as regards the play as a whole. Hamlet does not only raise the questions of the theatrical realization of a play but it also reflects on the ontology of the dramatic space by putting the performance of The Mousetrap-play into one of its focal points and scrutinises the very interaction between the dramatic space and the realm of the audience. I will discuss the process how Hamlet makes use of his private theatre and how the dramatic space is transformed as The Murder of Gonzago turns into The Mousetrap-performance. Vol. 2, No. 5, 2014, pp. 155-172. doi: 10.11648/j.ijla.20140205.14 Abstract: This paper examines Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606), and The Late Lancashire Witches (1634) by Thomas Heywood and Richard Brome, and considers in detail the witch scenes in both plays and their stage directions during their entrances and exits. The witches in the Jacobean Macbeth of the First Folio, do not explicitly fly in the stage directions. However, they do in the Restoration Macbeth, namely in Davenant’s second Quarto (1674). The question to be raised here is: what evidence is there in the pre-Restoration Macbeth that the witches flew? In order to explore this, we must consider what performance spaces were used for Macbeth in the Jacobean period. Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and Heywood and Brome’s The Late Lancashire Witches form an interesting comparison since they were both revised by other writers. The Late Lancashire Witches has not received as much scholarly attention as the other witch plays discussed here. Therefore, as a comparative study, this paper will also discuss the joint authorship of Heywood and Brome in The Late Lancashire Witches and the stage directions of the witch scenes. -

SYNOPSIS This thesis consists of an Introduction, followed by Part I (chapters 1-2) in which nineteenth- century criticism of the play is discussed, particular attention being paid to Helen Faucit's essay on Imogen, and its relationship to her playing of the role. In Part II the stags-history of Oymbcline in London is traced from 1785 to Irving's Lyceum production of 1896. Directions from promptbooks used by G-.P. Cooke, W.C. Macready, Helen Eaucit, and Samuel ±helps are transcribed and discussed, and in the last chapter the influence of Bernard Shaw on Ellen Terry's Imogen is considered in the light of their correspondence and the actress's rehearsal copies of the play. There are three appendices: a list of performances; transcriptions of two newspaper reviews (from 1843 and 1864) and one private diary (Gordon Crosse's notes on the Lyceum Gymbeline); and discussion of one of the promptbooks prepared for Charles Kean's projected production. -

Was Shakespeare collaborating with an inferior playwright or playwrights? Did he allow so many corrupt printed versions of his works after 1604 out of indifference? Re-dating Pericles from the Jacobean to the Elizabethan era answers these questions and reveals previously unexamined connections between topical references in Pericles and events and personalities in the court of Elizabeth I: John Dee, Philip Sidney, Edward de Vere, and many others. The tournament impresas, alchemical symbolism of the story, and its lunar and astronomical imagery suggest Pericles was written long before 1608. Finally, Shakespeare’s focus on father-daughter relationships, and the importance of Marina, the daughter, as the heroine of the story, point to Pericles as written for a young girl. This thesis uses topical references, Shakespeare’s anachronisms, Shakespeare’s sources, stylometry and textual analysis, as well as Henslowe’s diary, the Stationers' Register, and other contemporary documentary evidence to determine whether there may have been versions of Pericles circulating before the accepted date of 1608. -

The Shakespeare Authorship Question Lars Lindholm Bachelor Degree Project Literature VT 2012 Supervisor: Marion Helfer Wajngot Abstract The essay presents the scholarly controversy over the correct attribution of the works by “Shakespeare”. The main alternative author is Edward de Vere, 17th earl of Oxford. 16th century conventions allowed noblemen to write poetry or drama only for private circulation. To appear in print, such works had to be anonymous or under pseudonym. Overtly writing for public theatre, a profitable business, would have been a degrading conduct. Oxford‟s contemporary fame as an author is little matched by known works. Great gaps in relevant sources indicate that documents concerning not only his person and authorship but also the life of Shakspere from Stratford, the alleged author, have been deliberately eliminated in order to transfer the authorship, for which the political authority of the Elizabethan and Jacobean autocratic society had motive and resources enough. A restored identity would imply radical redating of plays and poems. To what extent literature is autobiographical, or was in that age, and whether restoring a lost identity from written works is legitimate at all, are basic issues of the debate, always implying tradition without real proof versus circumstantial evidence. As such arguments are incompatible, both sides have incessantly missed their targets. The historical conditions for the sequence of events that created the fiction, and its main steps, are related. Oxford will be in focus, since most old and new evidence for making a case has reference to him. The views of the two parties on different points are presented by continual quoting from representative recent works by Shakespeare scholars, where the often scornful tone of the debate still echoes. -

"omas Hunter knew I liked this book from its !rst words. “For too long” Delia Bacon has been misunderstood and misrepresented as has her symbolic function for Shakespeare I authorship studies: “an unworldly pursuit of truth that produces gifts for a world that is indi"erent or hostile to them.” Anyone who has labored in the vineyards of authorship study knows how well that statement expresses their experience. #e second accomplishment of authors Warren Hope and Kim Holston in the early pages of !e Shakespeare Controversy is to help untangle the web of Ms. Bacon’s seminal work, which !rst articulated the authorship issue and gave birth to subsequent generations of research, reading, and speculation, !e Philosophy of the Plays of Shakespeare Unfolded. #us, from its very beginning, the authors of this recently revised history of the Shakespeare authorship controversy provide an engaging and a very necessary primer into the history of the controversy and its progression toward Edward De Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford as the true author of Shakespeare’s works. It is at the same time more complete, more reasonable, and more readable than anything Stratfordian Professor Samuel Shoenbaum, who tended toward hysteria whenever he addressed authorship literature, ever provided in his histories of Shakespearean biography. Indeed in their introduction, the authors remark on how histories of authorship produced by the traditional camp have all been a$icted with “a dreary sameness…[that] there is no Shakespeare authorship question, really, only a gabble of cranks who think there is. -

[A] man can't handle glibly and easily and comfortably and successfully the argot of a trade at which he has not personally served. He will make mistakes; he will not, and can- not, get the trade-phrasings precisely and exactly right; and the moment he departs, by even a shade, from a common trade-form, the reader who has served that trade will know the writer hasn't.
