President Hisataka Moriwaki offered the following message to the departing students: You have studied the concepts of advanced, basic and applied sciences in the faculties and master's and doctoral courses of Gifu University. The results of your studies will never remain only in the fields of the faculties and those courses. You can generally apply the results to the fields of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences and develop them further. I hope you will build your careers with the wisdom acquired in Gifu University and with the will to extensively contribute to human beings. Dr. Shingo Katsuno, President of Gifu Pharmaceutical University delivered a congratulatory speech on behalf of the guests. The number of students who are awarded is as follows: - Faculty of Education – 252 - Faculty of Regional Studies – 117 - School of Medicine – 175 - Faculty of Engineering – 559 - Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences – 200 - Master’s Degree, Graduate School of Education – 48 - Professional Degree, Graduate School of Education – 20 - Master’s Degree, Graduate School of Regional Studies – 15 - Master’s Degree, Nursing Sciences, Graduate School of Medicine – 4 - Master’s Degree, Graduate School of Medicine – 8 - Master’s Degree, Graduate School of Engineering – 287 - Master’s Degree, Graduate School of Applied Biological Sciences – 74 - Doctoral Degree, Graduate School of Medicine – 21 - Doctoral Degree, Graduate School of Engineering – 16 - Doctoral Degree, United Graduate School of Drag Discovery and Medical Information Sciences – 1 1 During the ceremony, President Moriwaki also honored the 18 students for their outstanding academic achievements during their study at Gifu University in accordance with the President’s Commendation Rules. 2 President's address March 25, 2015 Hisataka Moriwaki President, Gifu University Let me begin by offering my sincere congratulations to the students who are graduating from Gifu University today, as well as the faculty members who have guided and instructed the students towards this day. Also in this venue, many of the students' families and those who have supported their school life are present. Seeing this truly outstanding scene for the commencement, I feel even more enthused about offering my congratulations. Gifu University was founded in 1949 and its predecessor goes back to the "Gifu Prefectural Normal School,” established in 1873. Our University has a history of more than 140 years and has produced so many outstanding alumni. They are playing active roles in various fields, in educational institutions, corporations and administrative organizations in Japan and overseas. The faculties and graduate schools of Gifu University are highly evaluated not only in Japan, but also internationally and it is all because of the activities of our alumni. All of you, who have earned your diplomas today, will also join in such activities. I would like to emphasize that the true evaluation of yourselves will depend on how you play a role within society in the future. As a faculty member, I increasingly feel that no matter where we stand and no matter what the development stages we are in, the basis that supports a country, particularly a country that has scarce resources such as Japan is, essentially education. Of course, the focus of education in each academic field changes with time and the emphasis in academic fields themselves will continue to change in the future. Furthermore, the prospect for what we should share and how we should share it has become indispensable, not only from the viewpoint of one local area and one country, but also from an international viewpoint. I wish all of you consider what social contribution you can make on a global scale, without limiting yourselves to your own research themes and your future plans. In particular, as to international contribution, as our country is right in the middle of internationalization efforts in extensive fields and consistency with international standards has become a pressing matter in various areas. Meanwhile, if we lose such a perspective, we will not be accepted under international standards, which is well-expressed by the words “Galapagos Syndrome.” You have studied the concepts of advanced, basic and applied sciences in the faculties and master's and doctoral courses of Gifu University. The results of your studies will never remain only in the fields of the faculties and those 3 courses. You can generally apply the results to the fields of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences and develop them further. I hope you will build your careers with the wisdom acquired in Gifu University and with the will to extensively contribute to human beings. After receiving a truly advanced, professional education or leading-edge research education, you were conferred the diploma today. Therefore, today is a memorable day when you will start your contributions to society, international communities and humanity as a whole. I hope you all live fulfilling lives with high goals without merely adhering to the areas you have studied at the University. In concluding my address, I would like to say that I am heartily looking forward to seeing and hearing about your activities from somewhere on the planet, regardless of whether it is in the near or distant future. 4 The Degree Awarding Ceremony for the United Graduate School of Agricultural Science and the United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences The Degree Awarding Ceremony of the United Graduate School of Agricultural Science (UGSAS) and the United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences (UGSVS) was held at the Gifu University Auditorium on Friday, March 13, 2015. The number of students who were awarded is as follows: - Doctoral Degree, UGSAS – 10 students - Doctoral Degree, UGSVS – 12 students - Doctoral Degree (by thesis), UGSVS – 2 students During the ceremony, President Hisataka Moriwaki also honored the two students for their outstanding academic achievements during their study at Gifu University in accordance with the President’s Commendation Rules. 5 Open Lecture “Infectious Diseases of Serious Concerns” The Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences held an open lecture entitled “Infectious Diseases of Serious Concerns” at the Satellite Campus of Gifu University on Monday, March 2. Dr. Ayato Takada of Hokkaido University Research Center for Zoonosis Control, and Associate Dr. Takeshi Kurosu of Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, gave presentations on infectious diseases. Around 60 people in and around Gifu City and university officials attended the lecture. Some came from as far as Tokyo to join the lecture. Under the title of “Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever: Current Status and Research Frontline”, Dr. Takada underscored the necessity of further investigation into the Ebola hemorrhagic fever as the world is waiting for unraveling the mystery of possible natural host of Ebola virus, transmission routes, prevention, treatment and diagnosis. Dr. Kurosu spoke about dengue fever under the title of “Dengue Fever Rages on – Why Now?” He explained transmission of dengue fever among dogs and cats, transmission from dogs and cats to humans, differences between dengue fever and filariasis* of dogs,

    December 2017 Male leaders’ challenges to promote women’s active participation in Japan A Group of Male Leaders Who will Create a Society in which Women Shine Gender Equality Bureau, Cabinet Office Introduction In June 2014, male leaders engaging in the promotion of active participation by women in society issued the“Declaration on Action by A Group of Male Leaders Who will Create a Society in Which Women Shine.” It has been about three and a half years since then, and over 150 people have expressed their support for the declaration. During this time, the momentum for women playing a more active role in society has grown steadily. The number of women in the workforce has increased, and the number of women in decision-making positions is slowly increasing as well. In April 2016,“The Act on Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace” was enacted. It requires large companies as well as national and local government agencies to formulate and disclose action plans and regularly disclose data on the participation and advancement of women. There are also initiatives in place to change male-oriented labor practices as well as men’s awareness and lifestyles—the largest barriers in achieving a work environment in which women thrive. However, the disparity between men and women in Japan is still large compared to other countries around the world. In order to motivate women and allow them to utilize their abilities maximally, we need to further accelerate our initiatives. In this report, we asked the leaders of organizations to share the significance of active participation by women from the perspective of management.

Part of the IIST’s international exchange program, these tours are designed to deepen understanding and awareness of economic developments at the sub-national level. Tour participants visit, for instance, plants, firms, universities and other local players in selected regions, where they engage in exchange with local economic organizations and administrations, learn about the local economic situation and the investment environment, and experience local culture. IIST Industrial Tour in GIFU Gifu Prefecture is conveniently situated in the center of Japan and well linked to three metropolises; Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. State-of-the-art industries, involved in aerospace, automobiles, and machine tools, are located in Gifu. In addition, traditional crafts, such as cutlery, ceramics and wooden furniture, continue to thrive. Gifu’s industries represent the diversity and power of small and medium enterprises in Japan, which support national industries. On 26-28 May 2010, in conjunction with the Chubu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), IIST invited representatives of APEC member economies stationed in Japan to Gifu prefecture, where the APEC SME Ministerial Meeting was scheduled to be held in Autumn 2010, to take part in the IIST Industrial Tour.

    第１デ 会 田 「輝く女性の活躍を加速する男性リーダーの会」行動宣言 賛同者による活躍推進報告書2018【表紙】／英語版（A3・420×297） C MYK 初校 2016.11.27 Male leaders’ challenges to promote women’s active participation in Japan December 2018 A Group of Male Leaders Who will Create a Society in which Women Shine Gender Equality Bureau, Cabinet Office Introduction In June 2014, nine male leaders known for their advocacy of women’s empowerment jointly formulated and announced the“Declaration on Action by a Group of Male Leaders Who Will Create a Society in Which Women Shine.” Four and a half years later, the Declaration is now supported by more than 200 male leaders. During these years, Japanese women’s social advancement has steadily progressed, as shown by a number of positive indicators, including women’s employment rate and percentage of female managers. These developments have had benefi cial eff ects on individual organizations, promoting workforce diversity and driving added value creation. In order to encourage and enable more women to develop and demonstrate their full potential, organizational leaders should be aware of this issue and take appropriate action. This report summarizes the group members’ initiatives and actions taken based on the Declaration as well as their inspirations and impetus. It is hoped that this publication will facilitate the sharing of male leaders’ thoughts and approaches concerning women’s empowerment, thereby inspiring and helping leaders to accelerate their eff orts toward a society where women shine. The public is invited to a special joint signing ceremony for the creation of a “Sister City” relationship between the Borough of Gettysburg and Sekigahara, Japan, and a “Sister Park” agreement between the Gettysburg National Military Park and the historic Sekigahara Battlefields. The 2 PM ceremony will take place at the historic Gettysburg Lincoln Railroad Station, 25 Carlisle Street, Gettysburg. The Governor of Gifu Prefecture, Hajime Furuta and the Mayor of Sekigahara, Yasuyo Nishiwaki will be featured speakers at the ceremony along with Gettysburg Mayor Theodore Streeter, Gettysburg Railroad Historian Dr. William Aldrich, and Gettysburg National Military Park Superintendent Ed Clark. A reception with light refreshments will follow the ceremony. Sekigahara is remembered as one of the biggest samurai battles in history, with 160,000 samurai fighting on, and around, a strategic mountain pass. In just six hours of close fighting, thousands of samurai were killed. The scene of the battle fought in 1600 is now preserved as a military park.
