My name is John Attanasio, and I am Dean of the SMU Dedman School of Law.' It is my pleasure to welcome you here this morn- ing. The law school has a very rich intellectual life, not only in the class- room, but also outside the classroom. On January 28-29, 2013, Justice Antonin Scalia visited SMU as a Dis- tinguished Jurist in Residence.2 Our own Professor Bryan Garner joined him on January 28 in presenting their book3 to a sold-out audience.4 This is our fifth time doing this event. It is one of my favorite events of the year, in part because it is always a very rich conference, but mostly because I am an avid gamer myself. -

It is important that such oppo- nents are able to play at a worthy level to keep players engaged. A great deal of research has been done on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in games to create intelligent computer controlled players, more commonly re- ferred to as AI agents, for a large collection of game genres. In this thesis we have focused on how to create an intelligent AI agent for the tacti- cal turn-based game Hero Academy, using our own open source game engine Hero AIcademy. In this game, players can perform five sequen- tial actions resulting in millions of possible outcomes each turn. We have implemented and compared several AI methods mainly based on Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) and evolutionary algorithms. A novel progressive pruning strategy is introduced that significantly improves MCTS in Hero Academy. Another approach to MCTS is introduced, in which the exploration constant is set to zero and greedy rollouts are used, that also gives significant improvement. -

Keynote Address Ted Price* Good morning. It is a real pleasure to be here at Southern Methodist University. Recently, Ron Jenkins asked me to drop by and share some thoughts on creating company culture. As an aside, he also asked me to share some ideas about where video games are heading, and frankly, that sounded like a lot more fun to me. So today, Ron, I apologize, but I'm ditching the company culture talk in favor of making predictions. Everyone loves making predictions about this particular industry. Of course, making predictions is dangerous because you look like a fool if you're wrong. That's why I'm qualifying my predictions by calling them four "crazy" predictions. That way, if I'm wrong, I can say "well, I told you they were crazy." Before I make any predictions, though, I'm going to talk about where the industry is now. Currently, the industry is undergoing unprecedented and revolutionary change. Next, I will go through a few specific (and slightly nutty) predictions, but I'm going to use those predictions to illustrate what I believe are accelerating trends in our industry. -

3 Definitions of Gamification and Serious Games
D2.3 Best practices in serious games D2.3 Best practices in serious games Smart Toolbox for Engaging Citizens into a People-Centric Observation Web Abstract Whilst citizen participation in environmental policy making is still in its infancy, there are signs of a growing level of interest. The majority of citizens, though, both as individuals and as groups often feel disengaged from influencing environmental policies. They also remain unaware of publicly available information, such as the GEOSS or Copernicus initiatives. The SCENT project will alleviate this barrier. It will enable citizens to become the ‘eyes’ of the policy makers by monitoring land- cover/use changes in their everyday activities. This is done through a constellation of smart collaborative technologies delivered by the SCENT toolbox in TRLs 6-8. In this deliverable, we examine 28 serious games, mostly related to environmental protection and monitoring. By analyzing these games in relation to 4 components (game mechanics, story, aesthetics and technology), we aim at pinpointing best practices in the application of gamification techniques. Key learning points that will inform the work in Scent are also identified.
