BEVERLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY FROM THE BEVERLEY TIMES 100 YEARS AGO

Bulk Handling of Wheat. MEETING AT BEVERLEY. ADDRESS BY MR. J. H.PROWSE, M.H.R. [Federal Member for Swan – Country Party]

There was a large attendance of farmers and others from the immediate and surrounding districts at the meeting held in the Mechanics' Institute on Monday afternoon to hear an address on the bulk handling question by Mr. J. H. Prowse, M.H.R. The chair was taken by Mr. F. McDonald (Chairman of the Beverley Road Board), who briefly introduced the speaker.

Before Mr. Prowse's address a moving picture entitled "Bulk Handling in Canada." was screened, giving a realistic pictorial description of what is being done in our sister Dominion across the seas. The pictures shown gave a good idea of the system in all its branches, and was an educational treat which was thoroughly appreciated by all present.

Mr. Prowse, in the course of a clear and concise description of the scheme, said that it was not a new idea, and the countries which had adopted it, Canada, Argentina, etc., would never return to bags as a means of marketing their grain. The money expended in bags was a distinct loss to Australia, and in this State represented a waste of about half a million of money. The difference between bags and bulk handling worked out at approximately 5½d per bushel, which could be saved to the primary producers, who were at present handicapped by a costly and antiquated system. To defray the cost of the installation of the bulk handling scheme the Commonwealth Government was prepared to advance two-thirds of the capital outlay at 6 per cent., repayable in 30 years, and there was in his opinion no time more opportune than the present for the introduction of the system in Australia, as he considered that for the coming season the farmer would receive at least 10s per bushel for his wheat. He was optimistic as regard the farming industry in , and believed that farming land in this State was due for a very appreciable advance in value.

Mr. Prowse's address was attentively listened to throughout, and at its close Mr. White, inspector for the Westralian Farmers Ltd, who accompanied Mr. Prowse on his tour, read the prospectus of the company, to be known as "The West Australian Grain Growers Co-operative Elevators Ltd.," to have a capital of a million and a half sterling in1,500,000 shares of £1 each. He also read a petition to be forwarded to the Premier with a view to facilitating the introduction of the bulk handling system in Western Australia. A committee consisting of Messrs. J. L. Thomas, R. C. Smith, H. W. A. Tanner, F. H. Blechynden and J. R. Bremner was appointed to advance the movement in this district, and a goodly number of those present put in their applications for shares and signed the petition to the Premier. [19 June 1920]

" Little Lord Fauntleroy." RONN SHAFTO'S COMPANY AT BEVERLEY.

The production of Mrs. Francis Hodgson Burnett's favourite play, "Little Lord Fauntleroy," in the Mechanics' Institute on Tuesday evening, attracted a well-filled house, and it is safe to say that everyone went home thoroughly well satisfied with their evening's entertainment. There was not a dull moment from the first rise of the curtain until it was finally rung down on the last act, and it is seldom that residents in the country have an opportunity of witnessing a production by players of the calibre of Ronn Shafto's company, all of whom acquitted themselves in a manner which stamped them as thorough artistes in their profession. Baby Esler, in the title role of the piece, was an absolute marvel, her acting being word perfect and clever. A return visit at some future date would be appreciated. [5 June 1920]

Sudden Death. MR. JOHN FLEET. Quite a sensation was caused on Saturday night by the sudden and unexpected death of Mr. John Fleet. He had not been feeling very well during the afternoon and evening, but nothing of a serious nature was suspected. He was resting on his bed when the train came in and Mrs. Fleet went down for the paper. Returning shortly afterwards she found him lying on the bed with his mouth open. Feeling alarmed at his appearance she tried to arouse him, but was unable to-do so and subsequently, communicated with the Police and Dr. Butler. The latter, upon examination, found life to be extinct, but the body was still warm. The doctor performed an autopsy the following morning, and gave a certificate to the effect that death was caused by failure of the action of a fatty heart induced by the engorgement of the lungs and by right pleurisy. An inquiry was consequently deemed unnecessary.

The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, a goodly number of sympathising friends following the remains to their last resting place in the Methodist Cemetery, where the burial service was read by the Rev. A. Schroeder. Mr. H. Benson had charge of the funeral arrangements.

Deceased, who was in his 62nd year, leaves a widow but no family. He was for a number of years engaged in farming pursuits in the County Peak district, but had retired from active work and had for some years been residing in Beverley. Our readers will join with us in extending to his widow our sincere sympathy in her sad and sudden bereavement. [5 June 1920]

COVID-19

Again, a big thank you to everyone for doing their best to adhere to the physical distancing and personal hygiene. Over the next few weeks there maybe a lot of announcements from the government including possible easing of some restrictions. Therefore, I won’t write the current restrictions as by the time you read this, it may have changed. So make sure you do your best to watch or listen to the news to get the latest update on restrictions.

What has changed recently of significance is the amount of people allowed to be together and also that hotels, pubs and cafe’s can now have dine in patrons. Whilst this is a fantastic opportunity to help these businesses by starting to dine out, those businesses also have to abide by strict guidelines. So don’t be offended when you are asked for your name and phone number to dine in as it is a requirement under the guidelines.

SEE IT, REPORT IT

I see a lot of information being put on Facebook and twitter about incidents in and around Beverley. Whilst this is great to inform all the residents of Beverley and I encourage continuing to do this, sometimes this information has not been given to police.

Unfortunately we don’t get to see all the information and updates from people on Facebook all the time, which is why if you see something suspicious you need to contact police immediately. You can do that by calling 131 444 or 000 if urgent.

Calling these numbers will ensure that you get to speak to someone, either us if we are on duty or another officer who can arrange for police attendance. We can’t always guarantee that we will be at the police station as we need to be out and about patrolling the community. So make sure if you see something suspicious that we need to know about, you contact us.

BEVERLEY POLICE – HOW TO CONTACT US

For all other matters phone 131 444 or 9646 3333 (leave a message if your call is diverted)

Warrior Wellbeing Article Blokes and Dehydration

We’ve all heard the old rule of thumb “8 glasses of water per day”. We shouldn’t be surprised to learn that this is an approximation for the average person and doesn’t consider gender or lifestyle. In fact, eight glasses a day might actually be leaving us dehydrated and the average intake for blokes might have to be revised upwards to about 13 glasses.

Men generally require more water than women due to their (on average) higher fat free mass and energy expenditure. Physical activity is a major influencer of water consumption in the body, the more physical activity we do the more we need to hydrate. We get thirsty once we start to dehydrate so, during exercise its important to keep up our liquid intake prior to feeling those pangs of thirst.

Climate is another consideration. Obviously, someone with a desk job has lower hydration requirements than a boilermaker working in a confined space in summer in the Pilbara. What is not so obvious is the fact that the desk jockey may have elevated water requirements due to air-conditioning; the dry air increases the body’s water needs.

We do get some of our daily water requirements through our food, as many fruits and vegetables have a high-water content, i.e. watermelon, tomato, cucumber etc. We can also count flavoured drinks as some of our intake, but water is the preferred option. Drinks with a high sugar content should be avoided, and before anyone says, “Well, three beers is a litre!” there’s an important distinction to make. Coffee and beer are examples of diuretics (substances which make us pee) therefore regardless of the intake there may be a nett loss happening. For example, for every 200ml of full-strength beer consumed, you pee around 320ml. That works out to drinking a six-pack and peeing 10 stubbies!

What Can We Do?  Assume we are dehydrated; it is so common as to almost be the norm.  Drink around 13 glasses of water per day, more if you are doing physically demanding work or sweating profusely.  During exercise drink every 15 minutes to pre-empt dehydration.  Use your pee as an indicator. Pale or straw-coloured is ok; yellow means dehydrated, and dark or verging on a brown colour is a sign of severe dehydration.  Water is by far the best form of hydration. The electrolytes in sports drinks are also present in a balanced diet. Sports drinks only have a role for endurance athletes who, during an event, push beyond the body’s natural stores of minerals.  When calculating water intake, consider the effects of diuretics like alcohol and caffeine. Remember “Drink 6 Pee 10”.

Keeping on top of dehydration is more than just drinking heaps of water. We need to understand that at different times, our hydration demands fluctuate. We need to be active observers of our bodies and take responsibility for keeping it in peak working order.

Anzac Day 2020 This year Anzac Day was quite different for our volunteers. We greatly missed marching with our veterans. However, the Beverley sub centre paid their respects to the service men and women by placing a wreath at the War Memorial on the morning of Anzac Day.

We look forward to and hope that everything returns to normal in 2021, so that we can once again march alongside our veterans.

Serving our community Our ambulance officers continually strive to provide excellent service and care to our community. We are incredibly grateful when the sub centre receives thank you cards or donations that demonstrate that this service and care is appreciated.

If you are happy with the service and care provided and wish to further acknowledge the efforts of our ambulance officers, the following links give the opportunity to do this: https://stjohnwa.com.au/about-us/community-hero-awards or https://stjohnwa.com.au/complaints/submit

COVID-19 As part of our standard procedure during COVID-19, and to ensure our patients receive the best and most appropriate prehospital care, our crews will be asking all patients if they have any flu like symptoms. This is to protect our amazing volunteers and our community of Beverley against the spread of any potentially infectious illness including COVID-19.

When calling for an Ambulance, you will be asked by the 000-call taker if you have flu like symptoms. When our crews arrive, they will ask you the same questions. Please don’t be scared to answer truthfully, even if you think you just have a mild cold. We have strict hygiene measures in place to keep you and our crews safe. Our goal is to help our community stay safe and stop the spread - but we can’t do that without our resilient and fantastic Community behind us.

Sub centre reopening The sub centre doors are now open to the public during our office hours i.e. Tuesday and Friday 9.00am – 2.00pm. If you wish to pay your membership or have any other query, please let us know beforehand (phone: 9646 1408 or email [email protected]) that you will be coming. We also request that you maintain the required 1.5m social distancing and use the available hand sanitiser when making your enquiry.

Beverley Community Garden After many months of planning (and having to deal with the corona virus lockdowns) the Community Garden Group is about to commence building the infrastructure of the garden.

After much discussion the site is going to be situated between Forrest and Bartram St, town side of the RSL Hall. We were successfully in getting a community grant from the Shire for $4,000 for fencing which we have purchased, and we would like to thank the Shire for this grant.

The Men’s Shed are about to start building the raised garden beds on site, and we have had donations of three IBC’s or pods plus 1 small tank to collect water which we are most grateful for.

We are still looking for donations of corrugated iron, old steel posts etc. to make compost bins.

We always need willing volunteers to help get this garden up and running. We have a variety of jobs, so there is something for everyone.

If you would like to be part of this exciting project or help in any way contact Betty 0400 569 971.

Many thanks Betty For Beverley Community Garden

Ladies Golf Memories

Welcome everyone to this edition. We would like to welcome two young members to our club, Carissa Shaw and Jacinta Murray. We hope you enjoy golf as much as we do. Unfortunately we still have not played any fixtures due to Covid-19. We hope to start very soon.

We have had scroungers every Tuesday and we have had a great roll up, lovely weather and some very good scores. From Monday 25 May, we will be able to use the clubhouse to drink cups of tea and coffee, unfortunately no alcohol due to the government ruling. Again, this month, I am going down memory lane, looking at what happened in 2013 and 2014. 2013

 We started the golf season with green fairways and the men had resanded quite a few greens, so there was a bit of adjustment with these in the beginning, but the greens have settled down now and are great.  On Friday 24 May, four ladies went to Tammin to play in their partner day. Jane Murray and Glenys Collins won the Gross with 85.

 On Wednesday 5 June, Marg Peck and Glenys Collins went to Wundowie to play in their Open Day. Update on COVID-19 The current advice from GolfWA is that, under Stage 2 restrictions, we are able to conduct internal club competitions only. One of the requirements is that we avoid events like Ambrose and Foursomes where players tend to congregate together and where sharing of equipment and balls is normally allowed. When the Stage 3 restrictions come into force we may further be able to hold open events but there will most likely be a limit to the total number of participants. Of course, all social distancing requirements (including the 4 square metres per person rule) must still be followed.

For the time being, we are still being advised to pre-arrange tee-off times. Therefore, the existing requirement to notify Mark Kont of your intention to play on Saturdays is still in place. He will notify you of your tee-off time and you are requested to try not to attend the course any earlier than 10 minutes prior to your time.

Motorised golf carts may still only be used by one person at a time (exception - two people if they live in the same dwelling.

The clubhouse will be open AFTER the game provided we adhere to certain strict conditions that have been advised to all playing members.

Outside of Club Days, the golf course remains open for use by anyone, including members of the public, and, again, providing all social distancing requirements are followed.

2020 Club Championship Due to the shortened season, your committee has decided that there will only be three qualifying rounds for the Club Championship this year. As in the past, the best two of these rounds will be used to determine the final qualifiers for the Match Play play-offs. The play-off series will remain unchanged.

Saturday Fixtures for June Saturday 06 - T-Bone and Sons Opening Day; Mixed Stableford

Saturday 13 - East vs West Challenge; Stableford (format T.B.A.)

Saturday 20 - Always Green Trophy; Stroke (First Round Club Championships)

Saturday 27 - Beverley Electrical Trophy; Russian Stableford

Because of the uncertainty over future COVID-19 restrictions, fixtured events past this point will be advised closer to the date. Keep an eye on next moths Blarney for further dates and the weekly Bulletins for any changes.

Wednesday Scroungers Wednesday scrounger events will continue to be played at around 4:00pm in the afternoon. Please adhere to the arrangements that are currently followed on Wednesdays. At the moment, there are no trophies being awarded in these events but this may change according to future decisions of the playing members.

Anyone is welcome to join us for this very relaxed game of six holes of golf. For further details contact Mark Kont on 0490 037 810

BEVERLEY REDBACKS HOCKEY CLUB

To our players, sponsors and supporters!

The Beverley Ladies Hockey Club would like to give an update on the current 2020 (or lack thereof!) Hockey Season.

With restrictions lifting we will be working closely with the Shire of Beverley and Hockey WA/The Avon Hockey Association to hopefully get back on the oval to do some training. We have made the decision to delay restarting training for 1-2 weeks, to allow us to best comply with the COVID19 Safe guidelines from the Shire and Hockey WA to keep our players and the community safe.

Hopefully over the next few weeks we will have greater certainty of what the 2020 season might look like and will continue to give updates as they arise. To keep updated please like us on Facebook or like us on our NEW Instagram account - beverley.redbacks.hockey.club.

Thank you to everyone who was involved in our virtual #hockeyinhibernation Challenge. The winners were Team BLACK! It was a fun way to keep our team together and laughing while we were unable to train, so thanks to our team and the community who got involved.

A BIG congrats to Chan and Kelly who have welcomed two new little additions to the Beverley Hockey Club Family – we can’t wait to see them out on the field in the future!

We hope everyone is staying safe and wish you and your families well over the next coming months.
