We Will Be A Band Of Joyful Missionary Disciples.

Thoughts from McClory Dear Family: There is need of only one thing: Jesus This weekend we hear the story of the sisters Martha and Mary and Jesus. I often find myself identifying with Martha, the busy worker. Of course, it’s very good to do things FOR Jesus: various ministries and service projects, helping people, organizing, planning and so on. At the same time, we need to remember that we can’t just be busy about doing things FOR Jesus, without spending some time WITH Jesus. If we substitute our activities for a relationship with Jesus, then our busy-ness will become a chore, not a joy. Rooted in a relationship with Him, all our work takes on a new meaning. So, yes, let’s be of service to Jesus, but always stay close to Him. Jesus tells Martha: "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." Mary has chosen to stay focused on Jesus, sitting at His feet. For those of us who identify with the busy-ness of Martha, it’s good to remember that later, as Jesus Meet Shrine's new Evangelization & comes to raise their brother Lazarus from the Faith Formation Director, Beth Spizarny dead, Martha does heed these words of Jesus. It See Page 8. is Martha who goes out to meet Jesus while Mary is at home. Read Fr. Kevin Roelant's last "Corner" The “one thing” we need is Jesus. Page 12 summarizes this primary focus on Jesus, and how that affects everything we do in this passage from his pastoral letter, Unleash the Gospel: (Continued on page 7)

www.shrinechurch.com July 21, 2019 7 Hello Shrine! My name is Beth Spizarny, and I joined the staff team this past June as the Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation. I’m excited to be here! In this newly created role, I will be responsible for our parish efforts of evangelization, which includes the goals of Unleash the Gospel among active parishioners, inactive Catholics, and the unchurched. I will also be responsible for supporting our faith formation and catechetical efforts- from Religious Formation to Youth Ministry, to RCIA, as well as our other adult faith formation offerings. It is a big job! I am counting on your prayers. Prior to joining the team at Shrine of the Little Flower, I served as the Director of Evangelization at St. Thomas the Apostle in Ann Arbor. It was amazing to see God transform hearts and lives through Alpha! We also saw cultural shifts in our parish through focusing on a welcoming initiative, parish retreats, parish-wide novenas, and door to door outreach. It is an awesome thing to see people encounter Jesus, and to see lives transformed as a result! God always has more for us. Before this role, I served as the Youth Minister for 10 years. I love teens! It was a blast to hang out with young people and help them discover Jesus Christ, who alone satisfies. I am originally from Ann Arbor, and my husband Kevin and I have three young children, ages 6, 4, and 2 1/2. We moved from Ann Arbor to Farmington Hills in early July to be closer to Shrine. My husband works in West- land, so Farmington Hills is a great spot for us to be. I look forward to getting to know you. There are so many amazing people here! • If you have a passion for evangelization– drop me a line. • If you have questions about evangelization– drop me a line. • If you have questions or ideas for our faith formation offerings, don’t hesitate to reach out. • If you have a passion for prayer and intercession, and you would be willing to partner with me in prayer, let me know! St. Therese, patron saint of missions, pray for us! Beth Spizarny Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation bspizarny@shrinechurch 248-556-9898

Stewardship Thoughts Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The important theme of hospitality connects today’s Scripture readings. In the Book of Genesis, Abraham’s kindhearted hospitality to three unknown visitors results in Sarah and him being granted a son in their old age. Nothing is impossible with God. In St. Luke’s Gospel, the evangelist narrates Martha’s welcoming of Jesus to their home; she, though, complains to Christ when her sister, Mary, decides to listen to His teaching rather than help Martha serve the meal. Martha does not realize that Mary is extending hospitality to Jesus through her attentiveness. Hospitality is an important pillar of the threefold aspect of Hymns, Homily, and Hospitality promoted at the parish. The stewardship act of greeters welcoming those who enter the church before Mass expresses warmth and hospitality toward newcomers and parishioners alike. Begin the evangelization process of unleashing the Gospel in your parish through hospitality.

Girl Scout Tradition Continues Recently spotted on Mackinac Island!....some of our very own Shrine Girls Scouts carrying on a 90-year tradition! According to mackinacisland.org, the tradition began in 1929 when then-Michigan Gov. Fred W. Green commissioned eight Eagle Scouts from around the state as honor guardsman on Mackinac Island, home of the Governor’s summer residence. One of those original scouts was Gerald R. Ford, who went on to become a U.S. congressman and, later, president of the United States. Today, the scouts stay in the 85-year-old barracks which host, aproximatley 60 scouts per week throughout the summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Each day, they march around the island in uniform to conduct morning and evening flag ceremonies at the Scout Barracks and elsewhere, including the Governor’s summer residence, the visitors center, the fort and the cemetery. They serve as guides at Fort Mackinac and other historic state park buildings, assisting paid park staff by greeting visitors and checking tickets, answering questions and running errands. The program benefits Mackinac Historic State Parks, which gets an estimated 30,000 hours of volunteer service from scouts each summer. The Mackinac Island Scout Service Camp is one of the few remaining scout camps in the country and the only place where scouts handle operations at an historical site.
