Wir sind zu Besuch in Nashville, Tennessee, beginnen die Reise aber aus guten Gründen in Bristol, Tennessee. Es gibt Interviews und Musik. (5) JUNE CARTER CASH: Wildwood Flower () CD/13 Die Geburtsstunde der Country Music schlägt 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee, als die Kleinstadt im Nordwesten der Great Smokey Mountains Schauplatz von Schallplatteneinspielungen der Victor Talking Machine Company unter Aufsicht ihres Chefproduzenten Ralph Peer wird. Diese Bristol Sessions bescheren sowohl der Carter Family als auch Jimmie Rodgers das Schallplattendebüt. Beide gelten als Uroriginale der Country Music. Ted Olson von der East Tennessee State University im Nachbarort Johnson City geht ins Detail. O-Ton: (englisch/deutsch) (1:05) (01) Die Carter Family und Jimmie Rodgers werfen einen langen Schatten. Die religiös eingefärbten Songs der Carter Family über Familie, Land und Leute, Herzensangelegenheiten, die Kraft der Gemeinschaft…und Jimmie Rodgers mit seinen Songs über Kummer und Schmerz und zielloses Herumtreiben, das sind die beiden Hauptstränge der Country Music. Warum zieht es Mother Maybelle Carter von der Carter Family oder einen Red Foley eher nach Nashville? Was hat Nashville, was andere Städte der amerikanischen Südstaaten nicht haben. (17) RED FOLEY: Chattanooga Shoeshine Boy (2:49) CD-50/01 Ralph Peer besorgt seine Schallplatteneinspielungen vor Ort in Bristol. Er nutzt mobiles Aufnahmegerät und ist zur Musik gereist. Damals eine gängige Verfahrensweise, mehr und mehr aber abgelöst durch stationäre Tonstudios. Deshalb gewinnt Nashville die Oberhand, erläutert Musikforscher Ted Olson. Hank Williams und Johnny Cash kehren der Louisiana Hayride den Rücken und gehen nach Nashville. Ray Price ist wegen seinem Idol Hank Williams aus Dallas, Texas hin gezogen. Ebenfalls aus Chicago kam Patsy Cline. Die Grand Ole Opry, dort musste man präsent sein. Das macht Nashville zur Hauptstadt der Country Music, zur Music City schlechthin, die Grand Ole Opry auf WSM. Der Radiosender gehört der National Life and Accident Insurance Company. Der Werbeslogan des Versicherungsunternehmens, „We Shield Millions“, ist in die Buchstabensignatur WSM eingeflossen. RAY PRICE: Release Me (0:35) CD-54/06 O-Ton: (englisch) (0:07) (05) Die Grand Ole Opry ist kein Ort sondern eine Radioshow, die älteste Radioshow der Welt, seit mehr als achtzig Jahren auf Sendung. Sagt eine, die es wissen muss. Lisaann Dupont ist Pressechefin im Ryman Auditorium. Zwischen 1943 und 1974 wird die Grand Ole Opry jeden Samstag aus dem Ryman in den Radioäther geschickt. (35) PATSY CLINE: I Fall To Pieces (0:35) CD-61/03 Mehrmals wechselt die Grand Ole Opry die Spielstätte, das Ryman Downtown Nashville ist und bleibt außergewöhnlich. Kris Kristofferson bringt es auf den Punkt. (38) 4 O-Ton: (englisch) (0:03) (06) Das Ryman ist die Mutterkirche der Country Music. Erbaut wird das Gebäude 1892 als Kirche. (40) ROY ACUFF: Waltz Of The Wind (0:35) CD-48/03 Bis heute genießt das Ryman geradezu kultische Verehrung. Pressechefin Lisaann Dupont muss sofort an die eigene Familie denken. Ihre Steifmutter und deren Mutter sind ungeheure Country-Fans gewesen. Dank der beiden war sie mit der Grand Ole Opry bestens vertraut, ständig wurde über die Radioshow geredet. O-Ton: (englisch) (0:08) (07) Als Lisaann Dupont Pressechefin im Ryman wurde, kam die Stiefmutter zu Besuch und brach beim Betreten des Gebäudes in Tränen aus. Sie war echt gerührt. O-Ton: (englisch) (0:11) (08) Die Programmstruktur ist über die Jahre dieselbe geblieben. Diverse Musikdarbietungen wechseln sich mit Square Dance ab, früher wurde auch noch Comedy geboten. Roy Acuff übernimmt jahrzehntelang die Rolle des Zeremonienmeisters. (46) O-Ton: (englisch/deutsch) (1:00) (09) Minnie Pearl avanciert zum Spaßvogel vom Dienst. … Mit kuriosen Geschichten über die Onkel, Tanten und Neffen ihrer weit verzweigten Verwandtschaft kalauert sie sich in die Herzen des Publikums. Das Umfeld der Grand Ole Opry sollte all das hervorbringen, was eine Musikmetropole ausmacht, Studios, Sessionmusiker, Songschreiber, Touragenten, Musikverlage. Der bekannteste seiner Art, das Verlagshaus Rose/Acuff von Roy Acuff und Fred Rose, hat Hank Williams unter Vertrag. Bristols Verlust ist Nashvilles Zugewinn, Nashville konnte eine ganze Industrie aus dem Boden stampfen, erzählt Ted Olson. Doch der Eindruck täuscht, die Stilistik erneuert sich. Fiddle, Banjo und Akkordeon treten in den Hintergrund. Gitarre, Piano und Schlagzeug rücken nach vorn. Dolly Parton gehört zu denen, die die Zeichen der Zeit zu deuten verstehen. (60) DOLLY PARTON: Joshua (2:59) CD-70/21 5 Schon am Rock’n’Roll scheiden sich die Geister. Jugendliche Befürworter sehen sich mit schockierten Eltern konfrontiert und umgekehrt. Der Siegeszug der Beatles zieht die Gräben noch tiefer. Umso mehr finden die Erwachsenen, dass ihnen die Country Music eher aus der Seele spricht. Was nicht weiter wundern sollte, glaubt Country-Music-Hall-Of-Fame- Kurator Michael McCall. (66) O-Ton: (englisch/deutsch) (0:31) (11) Verantwortung, Konsequenzen, das sind Erwachsenenthemen. Im Rock geht es mehr um Selbstverwirklichung, Sehnsüchte, Verlangen, eine gute Zeit zu haben. Country ist mehr über die Folgen, das, was einen im Nachhinein erwartet. Porter Wagoners „Sorrow On The Rocks“ wäre Mitte der 60er Jahre kaum als Rocksong denkbar gewesen. Voller Selbstmitleid weint ein gescheiterter Lebensgefährte in sein Whiskyglas. Man spürt die Last eines gelebten Lebens auf den Schultern des Sängers. Kite Title: The Eye of the Beholder: Ladino and Indigenous Pageantry in Neocolonial Guatemala Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Co-Advisors: Dr. Josephine Beoku-Betts and Dr. Mark Harvey Degree: Master of Arts Year: 2014 In this thesis I utilize a feminist case study method to explore gender, race, authenticity, and nationalism in the context of globalization. Each year, Guatemala conducts two ethno-racially distinct pageants – one indigenous, the other ladina. The indigenous pageant prides itself on the authentic display of indigenous culture and physiognomies. On the contrary, during the westernized ladina pageant, contestants strive to adhere to western beauty ideals beauty and cultural norms engendered by discourses of whiteness. However, when the winner advances to the Miss World Pageant, they misappropriate elements of Mayan culture to express an authentic national identity in a way that is digestible to an international audience. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Because country music is marketed and understood by many of its fans as a representation of a lifestyle, this shift in expectations for women’s social roles and possibilities in the genre has an impact on the women who identify themselves with the particular rural, down-home image country music aims to define.

Marriage equality is now the law of the land, the Boy Scouts ended its discriminatory ban based on sexual orientation, and an LGBT group marched in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade for the very first time. And as TIME noted, our nation has reached a “transgender tipping point.” Over 20 million people watched Caitlyn Jenner come out, and ABC looked to GLAAD as a valued resource for that game-changing interview. MESSAGE FROM THE CEO & PRESIDENT But even with these significant advancements, at GLAAD, we still see a dangerous gap between historic policy advancements and the hearts and minds of Americans—in other words, a gap between equality and acceptance. To better understand this disparity, GLAAD commissioned a Harris Poll to measure how Americans really feel about LGBT people. The results, released in our recent Accelerating Acceptance report, prove that beneath legislative progress lies a dangerous layer of discomfort and discrimination.
