America Windows 1977 Marc Chagall THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO Department of Museum Education Division of Teacher Programs Crown Family Educator Resource Center Presented as a gift to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1977, Marc Chagall the America Windows remain an integral symbol of the city’s longstanding relationship with the arts. At eight feet high French, born Vitebsk, Russia and thirty feet across, these stained glass windows are a vast arrangement of colors of the highest intensity—bright reds, oranges, yellows, and greens—placed against brilliant shades (Present Day Belarus), of blue. Representations of people, animals, and items such as writing implements, musical instruments, and artists’ tools 1887–1985 float above a skyline of buildings and trees. Artist Marc Chagall began working on his design for the windows in 1976, America’s bicentennial year, and constructed the windows as a tribute to the freedom of artistic expression enjoyed by the people of the United States. When designing the windows, he stated, “When one works, one must have a vision.” America Windows For Chagall, that vision was a vibrant celebration of human- 1977 kind’s creative energy. Art Talk—Chicago Public Artworks December 4, 2020 Linda Kay—Visual Art Instructor Phone: (630) 483-5600 We are so fortunate to live near a city so full of art and cultural treasures. Every time I make a trip to the downtown Chicago area, I am treated to an endless treat of visual delights and artwork. I try to find hidden treasures that I have not seen before. It’s not difficult to do as Chicago is filled with architec- ture, statures, parks and gardens. I want to share some of my favorites that are mostly outdoors, easy to get to and can be seen any time of the year. In a time of social distancing and being careful, this is still a great way to get out and enjoy the arts. Last December I took my granddaughter with me to explore Chicago. We were on a mission to find the biggest Christmas tree in the city, but along the way we saw so many wonderful places that it added greatly to our search. It was a memorable day. We took frequent breaks to warm up and enjoy snacks. We talked about what we saw, our favorite sights and where the next turn might take us. This collection that I share with you today are some of our favorites and are all easily walkable. We spent a full day exploring and learned a lot. I had done a similar day with my daughter when she was about the same age and it was fun continuing this type of tour with my granddaughter.

We invite you to use this brochure as a guide to explore the city’s distinguished public art collection, which can be found in the Loop and throughout our historic neighborhoods. Downtown Chicago is home to more than 100 sculptures, mosaics, and paintings placed in plazas, lobbies, and on the Riverwalk. The dedication of the huge sculpture by Pablo Picasso in 1967 confirmed that Chicago was a city for the arts. Since then, major works by Alexander Calder, Sir Anthony Caro, Sol LeWitt, Richard Hunt, and Ellen Lanyon, among others, have been added to this free open-air museum. The mission of DCASE is to enrich Chicago’s artistic vitality and cultural vibrancy. The primary method through which the City of Chicago’s Public Art Collection grows, the Percent-for-Art Program allocates 1.33 percent of the construction budget for new public buildings to the commissioning and acquisition of artwork. In libraries, police stations and senior centers, artwork is chosen and placed with ongoing community involvement.
