10th Anniversary of “Japan-China Teenage Ambassadors Program (High School Student Exchange)” Hosting the “Japan-China Teenage Ambassadors 10th Anniversary Reunion”

The AEON 1% Club Foundation will host the tenth “Japan-China Teenage Ambassadors” program over eight days from July 11 (Wednesday) to 18 (Wednesday). In parallel to this, we will also host the “Japan-China Teenage Ambassadors 10th Anniversary Reunion” event over four days from July 15 (Sunday) to 18 (Wednesday) to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the program.

The Foundation has established one of our three main projects* as Promotion of Friendship with Foreign Countries, and as such, we have been holding the Teenage Ambassadors Program, in which high school students from Japan and various nations, particularly in Asia, visit each other’s countries and conduct interpersonal exchange, since 1990. Among these programs, the Japan-China high school student exchange activities held in and Tokyo in 2009 received high acclaim from both the Chinese Government and participants from both nations, and as a result has since been held every year.

This year, in the tenth hosting of the Japan-China Teenage Ambassadors Program (hereinafter, the regular program), a total of 140 high school students – 70 students from Beijing, Wuhan and Qingdao in China and 70 students from Tokyo, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Hokkaido – will participate as Teenage Ambassadors to take part in an exchange program featuring a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister’s official residence, historical and cultural experiences in Japan, hands-on agricultural crop harvesting, classroom visits and a homestay.

At the “Japan-China Teenage Ambassadors 10th Anniversary Reunion”, previous participants of the Japan-China Teenage Ambassadors Program up until now will be reunited, and take part in five courses of hands-on experiences including opportunities to focus on food culture and traditional culture. Furthermore, on July 17 (Tuesday), as a highlight of the reunion, 600 people - previous participants and the 140 high school students who will take part in this year’s regular program - will gather in the same room to reflect upon the progress of the program over ten years, and take part in cross-generational interaction with a future outlook towards another ten years from now At this event, previous participants will present a “Declaration on the Future Friendship between Japan and China”, a summary of their own policies for action as intermediaries in the Japan-China relationship, which will be developed at the Group Discussion held by previous participants on the same day.

In addition, at the Memorial Lecture, with the theme of “New Ideas from Studying the Past”, participants will attend lectures given by young business managers who are leading a 300-year-old traditional Japanese sweets maker and a sake brewer towards the future, as well as a talk session by young Japanese and Chinese film directors together with a special film-viewing session. Through these activities, each previous participant will reflect upon the impressions they had at the time when they participated in the program as “Teenage Ambassadors”, and will be provided with the opportunity for a fresh consideration of what actions should be taken for the future of the Japan-China relationship.

Moreover, the Japan-China Teenage Ambassadors Program has been officially recognized as an “Event to Commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Conclusion of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the People’s Republic of China”. In addition, this tenth anniversary hosting of the program is also implemented as the first step in commemorating the upcoming thirtieth anniversary of the AEON 1% Club Foundation, which will be reached next year.

The Foundation will continue to foster activities that will contribute to the promotion of friendships between Japan and China by providing opportunities for deepening mutual understanding between young generations who will lead the future of both nations.
