  • Drug Facts Week Message Timely with Death of Amy Winehouse
Drug Facts Week Message Timely with Death of Amy Winehouse Details Created on Friday, 23 December 2011 11:52 Amy Winehouse, the former Grammy award-winning artist who had a very public battle with substance use disorder and her use of several illicit and licit substances, died in July of this year. Last week, however, the long awaited cause of Amy Winehouse's death was disclosed at a coroner's court in London. The findings show that Amy had died from her use of alcohol, not from the illicit substances which were the focus of much media attention. Her tragic and unfortunate loss serves to educate us that there is no "safe drug". Every time someone takes an addictive substance whether it be alcohol or cocaine, tobacco or ecstasy, there are significant risks that need to be understood. Unfortunately, our society has focused its attention in regards to the dangers of addiction according to cultural misperceptions. This non-scientific view has allowed for the de- sensitization of the real dangers of legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco, or prescription drugs which as a result of being improperly used is resulting in an alarming rise in the use of opiates. Seeking to spread the message that all drugs carry risks and are harmful to the body, President Obama's Administration for the second year in a row is holding "Drug Facts Week" from October 31st through November 6th. The weeklong event will seek to connect teens with scientifically proven facts about drugs and substance use disorder. Last year's successful Drug Facts Week saw over 100 community events and discussions between teens and scientists.

Thomas Keith A Discography of Robert Bums 1948 to 2002 After Sir Walter Scott published his edition of border ballads he came to be chastised by the mother of James Hogg, one Margaret Laidlaw, who told him: "There was never ane 0 my sangs prentit till ye prentit them yoursel, and ye hae spoilt them awthegither. They were made for singing an no forreadin: butye hae broken the charm noo, and they'll never be sung mair.'l Mrs. Laidlaw was perhaps unaware that others had been printing Scottish songs from the oral tradition in great numbers for at least the previous hundred years in volumes such as Allan Ramsay's The Tea-Table Miscellany (1723-37), Orpheus Caledonius (1733) compiled by William Thompson, James Oswald's The Cale donian Pocket Companion (1743, 1759), Ancient and Modern Scottish Songs (1767, 1770) edited by David Herd, James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum (1787-1803) and A Select Collection of Original Scotish Airs (1793-1818) compiled by George Thompson-substantial contributions having been made to the latter two collections by Robert Burns.

  • Christy Moore and the Irish Protest Ballad
“Ordinary Man”: Christy Moore and the Irish Protest Ballad MIKE INGHAM Introduction: Contextualizing the Modern Ballad In his critical study, The Long Revolution, Raymond Williams identified three definitions of culture, namely idealist, documentary, and social. He conceives of them as integrated strands of a holistic, organic cultural process pertaining to the “common associative life”1 of which creative artworks are an inalienable part. His renowned “structure of feeling” concept is closely related to this theoretical paradigm. The ballad tradition of popular and protest song in many ethnic cultural traditions exemplifies the core of Williams’s argument: it synthesizes the ideal aesthetic of the traditional folk song form as cultural production, the documentary element of the people, places, and events that the song records and the contextual resonances of the ballad’s source and target cultures. Likewise, the persistence and durability of the form over many centuries have ensured its survival as a rich source for ethnographic studies and an index of prevailing socio-political conditions and concerns. As twentieth-century commentators on the Anglophone ballad form, such as A. L. Lloyd, have observed, there is an evident distinction between the older ballad tradition, tending toward a more impersonal and distanced voice and perspective, and the more personal style of ballad composed after the anthropological research of ethnomusicologists such as Cecil Sharp, Alan Lomax, and others during the first half of the twentieth century. The former derives from a continuous lineage of predominantly anonymous or unattributed folk material that can be said to reside in the public domain, and largely resists recuperation or commodification by the music industry.

  • A Ludic Reading of Conflictual Dynamics in Three Short Stories by Grace Paley
RSA JOURNAL 28/2017 CRISTINA DI MAIO All Is Fair in Play and War: A Ludic Reading of Conflictual Dynamics in Three Short Stories by Grace Paley But most women in our P.T.A. were independent – by necessity and disposition. We were, in fact, the soft-speaking tough souls of anarchy. (Grace Paley, “Friends”) Grace Paley (1922-2007) spent a lifetime coping with the difficult task of being a poet, a writer, a mother, a woman, and an activist. Sometimes she struggled, and she was not afraid or ashamed of admitting it, even through her art. Still, her maiden name was Goodside, and this innate positivity was probably what pushed her to keep facing that hard challenge and win it, on her own terms. She thought that being a versatile human being and a committed person was not only inevitable for her, but also would make her an even better mother – and she claimed this vision through her artistic production as well. Paley’s biographer, Judith Arcana, in fact, remarks how Grace Paley chose to embrace her motherhood and her activism and integrate them both in her writing, thus challenging “the romantic image of the (archetypically male) artist as lonely seeker and interpreter of truth and beauty” (80). Her fictional, semi-autobiographical world is mostly populated by mothers who must deal with children, teachers, working hours, chores, sentimental troubles, social interactions and even political activism all at once; in doing so, she integrated all of her life experience into her writing and managed to reach a considerable share of readers, who similarly attempt to balance the maternal experience with their own individuality and personal goals.
