5 Responding to climate change together

The and the University of Lincoln are seeking to be leaders in in responding to climate change through the staging of a conference focused on science and theology. The international conference, which is to be held on the 30th and 31st of August and 1st of September 2019 at the University of Lincoln and Lincoln Cathedral, will offer lectures, discussions and workshops with the aim of identifying responses to reduce human-induced climate change.

The conference will feature speakers from Lincoln, Polynesia, New Zealand and the United States, and will see dialogue between the disciplines of theology and science in seeking to reduce the size of the carbon footprint inherited by future generations. A further intended outcome of the conference will be the launch of an updated environmental policy for the diocese and details of processes designed to measure the effectiveness of actions taken.

Bishop Christopher has invited participants from Polynesia to tell their story of rising tides and severe storms. In looking ahead to the conference, the bishop has said: “Water can take life and give life. It is easy for us to lose touch with nature but the reality is that rising tides and tropical storms combined with drought and falling reservoirs leaves us with too much water and not enough water. In the UK we are somewhat shielded from the impact of such threats but places like Fiji and Tonga, which have endured immense changes in weather patterns, are a wake-up call for us all.”

Bishop Christopher is hoping that as many people as possible will be able to attend the conference, and as well as the lectures there will be art displays, a market place showcasing the work of groups and businesses seeking to lower their carbon footprint, a dinner and a service in Lincoln Cathedral.

6 Speaking with regard to the new diocesan environmental policy, the Revd Richard Steel (diocesan Mission Team Leader) has said: “Our environmental policy will include commitments about how we run the diocesan offices and the use of glebe land, and it will encourage churches to take their own actions, as part of our commitment to the national ‘Ecochurch’ scheme. We will also be including a section detailing possible personal actions, with many practical suggestions.

“We believe that taking practical action in our care for creation is no longer a fringe interest for activities but rather a vital contribution that Christians can make to the future of this planet that God has given us, and a ‘core concern of the Church’s evangelising work’.”

For more details, including ticketing information and speaker biog- raphies, please see www.wateroflife2019.eventbrite.co.uk

Enquiries may also be made by calling 01522 50 40 50 or by emailing [email protected]

The carbon footprint of the conference will be calculated and offset with a tree planting project in Lincoln.

10 Belfry News An Evening at St Marys

Tuesday evening, May 7th, and we are in the ringing room at St Mary, Long Sutton, its tower containing, in my opinion, the finest ring of eight bells in this district. A Taylor recast of 1934, their tonal qualities are excellent, enhanced by clarity of sound in the ringing room, they are a pleasure to ring. The occasion is an open prac- tice hosted by Gedney and ringers and we welcome 14 visitors from , Spalding, Holbeach, Lutton, Gedney Hill, Long Sutton, Terrington St Clements and Clenchwarton. The bells are soon in action , rounds, call changes, tri- ples and major to accommodate as far as possible, all abilities and requests. The evening concludes across the road in nearby Palmers where we assuage our thirsts and happily discuss the evenings happenings and future plans.

But, what about the history of St Marys bells? Well, prior to the 1934 recast they were a ring of six bells, five being cast in 1716, by Henry Penn of Peterborough. Penn ( 1685 to 1729) came to Peterborough in 1709 setting up a foundry and hoping to "scoop the contract" to provide the cathedral with 10 bells. Although only 24 years old he was successful though due to cost implications these bells were hung in the original medieval frame, giving problems. Five smaller bells were sold and three of the remaining five were sold much later in 1984, to a group of Americans who incorrectly assumed that Penn was related to William Penn, founder of Pennsylva- nia. As for Henry he had a dispute with the churchwardens at St Ives, where in 1723 he cast eight bells said to be "out of tune". There was a court action lasting seven years which Penn won, saying in the court room afterwards, "I am sick to death-the whole thing will do me no good" Shortly afterwards on mounting his horse he collapsed and died. He was just 44 years old.

In St Marys ringing room is a small bell, some 10" diameter bearing Penns name and dated 1716 with the inscription "HENRICUS PENN PETERBORGENSIS, FUSOR, 1716". I must admit that I incorrectly assumed that this bell was also cast by Penn in 1716 as its date implies. However George Dawson, archivist with Taylors tells me that the bell was cast by Mears and Stainbank in 1887 when this firm recast the 1716 Penn tenor, perhaps as a present on gaining the contract. In conclusion I would like to thank Father Jonathan for granting permission to ring, Marion Meadows for access to the tower and Michael Lee of Fotheringay, biographer of Henry Penn for allowing me to use information from his writings.

13 ‘What's On’

Fleet Baptist Church Pastor: Ross A Dean. Phone: 01406 424556 ‘The Spirit that God has given us fills us with power, love and self-control’ 2 Tim. 1:7 Following the Lord’s Ascension, this month we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to continue, in the lives of believers, the work that the Lord Jesus so wonderfully accomplished in his death and resurrection. Let us rejoice that the Spirit can fill us with power, love and self-control in our daily lives, as Paul tells Timothy in our text. But remember too that the Spirit in our hearts is the mark of God’s ownership upon us and the guarantee of all that He has in store for us, in this life and the next. (2 Cor.1:22). What a wonder- ful truth! Our Flower Festival at the beginning of May was a memorable occasion. It was good to meet visitors from many places and also to renew friendships with those who come each year. The flower arrangements were beautiful, a testament to the time and skill of those who arranged them and certainly a reminder of the magnificence of God’s creative power. We thank all who came to share in the weekend and especially all those who helped in any way to make it a success. This month: Family Worship at 3.00pm. on Sundays 2nd June (with Communion), 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th, followed each week by tea and cakes in the Stables Hall.

I’m sure some of you are thinking about your summer gardens, particularly now the weather is improving. If you are sorting out borders and splitting plants then please spare a thought for the Flower Festival. Any plants surplus to re- quirements would be much appreciated on the Plant stall. GEDNEY CHURCHYARD

On Saturday 29th June a Churchyard tidy will take place, weather permitting. Please come along armed with a few gardening tools. We shall start at about 09.30 and aim to finish around lunchtime. It will be good to have a couple of hours weeding the large borders on either side of the main path in readiness for the Flower Festival. The visitors book at church contains lots of lovely comments about our Church- yard. Please could you help keep it looking smart? We already have several vol- unteers who have ‘adopted’ an area of the flower border and are very thankful to them for their sterling efforts. If you feel you could assist them with another small area we would be grateful. Please contact William or Jill.

FLOWER ARRANGING

There have been several requests to repeat last year’s ‘refresher’ flower arrang- ing evenings in Gedney Church prior to the Flower Festival. Jane Webb has kind- ly agreed to help again and with this in mind two dates have been arranged. Thursdays 11th and 18th July starting at 7 pm. If you are interested then do please come along bringing greenery, flowers and a dish/bowl. You will also need a pair of scissors or secateurs. Oasis foam and tape will be provided plus spare greenery if needed. A small charge of £3 will be made to cover costs and refreshments.

If you would like more information then please ring Carol Young – 01406 362959 GEDNEY CHURCH FLOWER FESTIVAL

Just a short note about our Annual Flower Festival. This year the dates will be from Thursday 25th July to Sunday 28th July. Please remember to let friends and family know. Posters and flyers will be available later from Church, these can then be given to anyone you think may be visiting during Tombola Stall

This year the Tombola Stall is to be run by Mrs Mandy Cole again. Mandy has asked that you spare a thought for the Stall. Lots and lots of items are needed to cover the four days of the Festival. If you have anything that you think would be suitable, e.g. unwanted gifts or other new items, then please get in touch. Mandy’s number is 01406 363536. Many thanks and God Bless, Book Stall

Hazel Horne has very kindly managed the Book Stall for several years but she now feels it is time to take a break. We do thank Hazel and her team, particular- ly Frances, for their dedication to the task. Liz Scrimshaw has very generously offered to take up the reins and will be pleased to receive book donations in the lead up to the Festival. Her telephone number is 01406 362321.
