RECONCILING MEMORY: LANDSCAPES, COMMEMORATIONS, AND ENDURING CONFLICTS OF THE U.S.-DAKOTA WAR OF 1862 by JULIE HUMANN ANDERSON Under the Direction of Clifford M. Kuhn ABSTRACT The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 resulted in the deaths of more than 500 Minnesota settlers, the expulsion of the Dakota people from their homeland, and the largest mass execution in U.S. history. For more than a century, white Minnesotans declared themselves innocent victims of Indian brutality and actively remembered this war by erecting monuments, preserving historic landscapes, publishing first-person narratives, and hosting anniversary celebrations. However, as the centennial anniversary approached, new awareness for the sufferings of the Dakota both before and after the war prompted retellings of the traditional story that gave the status of victimhood to the Dakota as well as the white settlers.

												  ABSTRACT Revisiting the Dakota Uprising of 1862 Jennifer MckinneyABSTRACT Revisiting the Dakota Uprising of 1862 Jennifer McKinney, M.A. Mentor: Julie Anne Sweet, Ph.D. The Dakota Uprising of 1862 began as a cultural response by the Dakota Indians in reaction to their poor treatment by the United States government. Previous scholarship provides several reasons for the Uprising, often condemning the Dakota’s actions as a violent overreaction to inept government practices. Before the Civil War, the Dakota had signed treaties that gave their lands to the United States in exchange for amenities and food. Crop failure along with corrupt federal government agents made for a volatile mixture that left the Dakota destitute and distressed. At the height of their desperation, the Dakota chose to revolt. Surprised and shocked by the Dakota’s actions, the federal government reacted militantly. Had federal agents listened to warning and understood Dakota culture, the Uprising of 1862 could have been averted. Indian Villages that were located in Redwood County just prior to the outbreak were those of Red Middle Voice, Shakopee, Big Eagle, Little Crow, Wakute, Traveling Hail. Mankato and Wabasha. All the villages were located along the Minnesota River. Many Dakota people lived in adjoining Renville County on the reservation that was established along the Minneota River as part of the Treaty of 1851. The Lower Agency, also called the Redwood Agency, was a bustling place with twenty four buildings: four stores, a barn, blacksmith shop, separate housing for the doctor, missionaries, school superintendent, the blacksmith, the carpenter, teamsters, and a warehouse. The Church of St. John, Episcopal, was being built, its cornerstone laid by Bishop Henry Whipple on July 4, 1862. Its location was just southeast of the Lower Sioux Agency. Samuel D. Hinman was the pastor. during the conflict: August 17, 1862: Little Crow is said to have attended the church service on this day before the first attack, "shaking hands with many of those present." DU 282, from Curtiss-Wedge ed., Renville County, 1:139.August 17, 1862: ...the very morning of the Acton killings, Little Crow had awakened early, gone hunting, and walked to the Episcopal mission to attend Sunday services. Taking the recent sesquicentennial of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 as a case in point, this study gives an overview of the public pedagogy (Sandlin et al., 2011) that prevailed in southern Minnesota in 2012, encouraging educators to present perspectives on the war in ways commonly considered “balanced,” “neutral,” etc., all while urging citizen-scholars to commemorate sacrifices made by the Dakota people and white settlers equally.
