At the post-tournament awards banquet, Honorary Chairman and Red- skins legend Bobby Mitchell announced that this year’s event cleared a re- cord $705,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Mitchell credited this remarkable success to his fellow Hall of Famers, “who donate 100% of their time and support year after year.” Mitchell also praised the tournament sponsors and countless volunteers who together with their appreciable re- sources and “sweat equity,” brought about a major fundraising event. He had particular praise for the leadership and hard work contributed by event co-chairs, Tamara Darvish, DARCARS, and Todd Heavner, Enterprise Rent-a-Car. He then recognized BMC founder and chairman emeritus, Dick Patterson. A special presentation was then made to Jim Koons, Koons Auto- motive Companies, who became the event’s inaugural inductee into the Community Leadership Hall of Fame. (Continued from page 2) This year’s tournament honoree and “Patient Hero” was Ramon Hilliard, a 15-year-old from Hyattsville, MD, who was celebrating a one year anniversary of a successful bone marrow transplant. He and his mother, Denae Hilliard, gave heartfelt thanks to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for all the services they provided, and to Bobby Mitchell, the Hall of Famers and all those in attendance who “contributed so much.” Ramon was the happy recipient of the evening’s prized live auction item – a football signed by all 46 Hall of Famers. The ball was won by Todd Heavener and his wife with a bid of $10,000 and donated to Ramon on behalf of Enter- prise Rent-a-Car. The live auction also included a trip to Bourdeaux, France, contributed by Total Wine & More; golf at Pebble Beach and first class tickets, contributed by American Airlines; and a 6-day vacation in Iceland contrib- uted by Comcast Spotlight. A wide range of silent auction items brought in thousands of additional dollars, as did a 2007 FJ Cruiser SUV raffled off thanks to Toyota. Bobby Mitchell and his wife, Gwen, again starred in a video tribute to Toyota, WANADA and other major tournament sponsors, including Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation, DARCARS, Easterns Automotive, Costco, American Airlines, PhRMA, Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge, Koons Automotive, Toyota of Bowie, Provident Bank, Pepsi Cola Inc, SportsTalk 980 and Comcast Spotlight. • 1967 APBA PRO FOOTBALL SET ROSTER the Following Players Comprise the 1967 Season APBA Pro Football Player Card Set
1967 APBA PRO FOOTBALL SET ROSTER The following players comprise the 1967 season APBA Pro Football Player Card Set. The regular starters at each position are listed first and should be used most frequently. Realistic use of the players below will generate statistical results remarkably similar to those from real life. IMPORTANT: When a Red "K" appears in the R-column as the result on any kind of running play from scrimmage or on any return, roll the dice again, refer to the K-column, and use the number there for the result. When a player has a "K" in his R-column, he can never be used for kicking or punting. If the symbol "F-K" or "F-P" appears on a players card, it means that you use the K or P column when he recovers a fumble. Players in bold are starters. If there is a difference between the player's card and the roster sheet, always use the card information. The number in ()s after the player name is the number of cards that the player has in this set. See below for a more detailed explanation of new symbols on the cards. • An Aw Shucks Guy: Billy Shaw
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 21, No. 4 (1999) An Aw Shucks Guy Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 1999 By Joe Horrigan Guard Billy Shaw, once describcd as an "aw shucks sort of guy from Mississippi,” makes perfect strangers feel instantly comfortable with his polite disposition and broad smile. His friendly demeanor makes it difficult to believe that this gentle giant was one of pro football’s toughest competitors. However, when the game whistle blew and the ball was snapped, Shaw's "Mr. Nice Guy" nature metamorphosed to an aggressive, focused lineman, with one thing on his mind, winning football games. "When you played against Billy," remembers Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame linebacker, Bobby Bell, "you brought your lunch. He played every down to the maximum. He was relentless." A 6-2, 258-pound All-America lineman out of Georgia Tech, Shaw was the second-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in the 1961 American Football League draft and a fourteenth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys of the then-rival National Football League. It wasn't that the Cowboys failed to recognize Shaw’s potential when they selected him in the late round. It was simply a calculated risk on their part. "I had already signed with Buftalo when the National Football League held their draft," Shaw explained. "In those days, people didn't know if the AFL would last the year, and I guess the Cowboys wanted to be able to claim me." Since the AFL did survive, the Cowboys never got their chance to claim the two-way Georgia Tech star, whose steadying influence on the Bills led the team to consecutive AFL titles in 1964 and 1965.

  • BUFFALO BILLS Team History
PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2020-2021 EDITIOn QUARTERBACK JIM KELLY - hall of fame class of 2002 BUFFALO BILLS Team History The Buffalo Bills began their pro football life as the seventh team to be admitted into the new American Football League. The franchise was awarded to Ralph C. Wilson on October 28, 1959. Since that time, the Bills have experienced extended periods of both championship dominance and second-division frustration. The Bills’ first brush with success came in their fourth season in 1963 when they tied for the AFL Eastern division crown but lost to the Boston Patriots in a playoff. In 1964 and 1965 however, they not only won their division but defeated the San Diego Chargers each year for the AFL championship. Head Coach Lou Saban, who was named AFL Coach of the Year each year, departed after the 1965 season. Buffalo lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1966 AFL title game and, in doing so, just missed playing in the first Super Bowl. Then the Bills sank to the depths, winning only 13 games while losing 55 and tying two in the next five seasons. Saban returned in 1972, utilized the Bills’ superstar running back, O. J. Simpson, to the fullest extent and made the Bills competitive once again. That period was highlighted by the 2,003-yard rushing record set by Simpson in 1973. But Saban departed in mid-season 1976 and the Bills again sank into the second division until a new coach, Chuck Knox, brought them an AFC Eastern division title in 1980.
