  • From Patinir's Workshop to the Monastery of Pedralbes. a Virgin
https://doi.org/10.5565/rev/locus.323 LOCVS AMŒNVS 16, 2018 19 - 57 From Patinir’s Workshop to the Monastery of Pedralbes. A Virgin and Child in a Landscape Rafael Cornudella Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona [email protected] Reception: 05/04/2018, Acceptance: 23/06/2018, Publication: 04/12/2018 Abstract Among the paintings of netherlandish origin imported into Catalonia during the first half of the 16th century, preserved at the Monastery of Pedralbes, there is a small panel featuring the Madonna and Child in a landscape which is attributed here to Patinir’s workshop, not excluding the possibility of some autograph intervention by the master. Whatever the case, this article sets out to situate the piece both in the context of its production and in that of its reception, that is, the community of nuns of Saint Claire of Pedralbes. What is interesting about this apparently modest work is the fact that it combines a set of ingredients typical of Patinir in a composition that is otherwise atypical as regards his known output as a whole, above all in terms of the relationship between the figure and the landscape, although also of its presumed iconographic simplicity. The final section of the article examines the piece in relation to the ever-controver- sial issue –which still remains to be definitively resolved– of the authorship of the figures in the works of Patinir. Keywords: Joachim Patinir; 16th Century Netherlandish Painting; landscape painting; The Virgin suckling the Child; The Rest during the Flight into Egypt; Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes Resum Del taller de Patinir al monestir de Pedralbes.

  • South Netherlandish School
southern netherlandish school c.1500 The Virgin and Child oil on panel (arched top) 49.2 x 34.2 cm (19⅜ x 13½ in) HIS DEPICTION OF THE VIRGIN AND CHILD WAS a popular composition in Netherlandish painting during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, but this version stands slightly apart for several reason, not least its exceptional quality. The Virgin gently cradles the infant tChrist in both hands and stares serenely and maternally at Him. She is depicted as Queen of Heaven, dressed in a luxurious pink cloak over a fine tunic and delicate lace veil. She wears a jewelled headband, stands against a richly coloured hanging, and the wall behind her has been inscribed with detailed patterning. Beyond this wall is an extensive landscape dotted with copses of trees, and the whole composition is framed by a decorative foliate arch. The painting is exquisitely painted, with the attention to detail that characterises the best work of the so-called Flemish Primitives. The modelling of light is superb, as it picks out the hollow of the Virgin’s throat, highlights the sculptural folds of her cloak, and shimmers through both figures’ hair. Details such as the slight flush of the Virgin’s cheeks are typical of the overall subtlety of execution. The long slender fingers and rigid postures are also common features of southern Netherlandish painting of this period. As previously mentioned, the composition of the present work was a popular one during this period. Max Friedländer believed it ultimately originated from Rogier van der Weyden’s depiction of the Virgin and Child in his Saint Luke Drawing the Virgin (fig.

  • Ginsb & Weyers-Final
On the Formation of Canons: The Dynamics of Narratives in Art History Victor Ginsburgh ECARES, Université Libre de Bruxelles and CORE, Université catholique de Louvain and Sheila Weyers Université catholique de Louvain Abstract The paper illustrates the formation over time of the late 20th century canons of two schools that dominated all other European schools in their time: Italian Renaissance and Flemish Realism. Since most artists were discussed, some 400 years ago, by Vasari in the second edition of his Vite, and by van Mander in his Schilder-boeck, narratives by art historians can be followed over a long period of time. To explore the dynamic process of canon formation, we collected data on the presence and the greatness of a large number of artists in narrative works written by important art scholars at time intervals of roughly 75 years, so that the 400 years elapsed between 1600 and 2000 are spanned as best as possible. At least half of the artists in the two canons were already there 400 years ago. There are several cases of wrong attributions or of new technical discoveries that prevented some names to be canonical any sooner. There are also artists who art historians learnt to appreciate or to understand better, and who entered at much later times. Finally, the number of names that entered or were moved up in the canon because their works acquired new properties in the light of works by artists that followed them is not very large. This appears to be in contradiction with the frequent suggestion that canons are continuously moving and that no artist can survive forever.

  • EARLY NETHERLANDISH PAINTING Part One
EARLY NETHERLANDISH PAINTING part one Early Netherlandish painting is the work of artists, sometimes known as the Flemish Primitives, active in the Burgundian and Habsburg Netherlands during the 15th- and 16th-century Northern Renaissance, especially in the flourishing cities of Bruges, Ghent, Mechelen, Leuven, Tounai and Brussels, all in present-day Belgium. The period begins approximately with Robert Campin and Jan van Eyck in the 1420s and lasts at least until the death of Gerard David in 1523, although many scholars extend it to the start of the Dutch Revolt in 1566 or 1568. Early Netherlandish painting coincides with the Early and High Italian Renaissance but the early period (until about 1500) is seen as an independent artistic evolution, separate from the Renaissance humanism that characterised developments in Italy; although beginning in the 1490s as increasing numbers of Netherlandish and other Northern painters traveled to Italy, Renaissance ideals and painting styles were incorporated into northern painting. As a result, Early Netherlandish painters are often categorised as belonging to both the Northern Renaissance and the Late or International Gothic. Robert Campin (c. 1375 – 1444), now usually identified with the Master of Flémalle (earlier the Master of the Merode Triptych), was the first great master of Flemish and Early Netherlandish painting. Campin's identity and the attribution of the paintings in both the "Campin" and "Master of Flémalle" groupings have been a matter of controversy for decades. Campin was highly successful during his lifetime, and thus his activities are relatively well documented, but he did not sign or date his works, and none can be confidently connected with him.

  • Job and His Comforters : a Comprehensive Report Based on Technical and Art Historical Analysis
1 JOB AND HIS COMFORTERS : A COMPREHENSIVE REPORT BASED ON TECHNICAL AND ART HISTORICAL ANALYSIS THE COURTAULD INSTITUTE OF ART RESEARCH FORUM : CONSERVATION AND ART HISTORICAL ANALYSIS WORKS FROM THE COURTAULD GALLERY PROJECT Harriet Pearson and Alexandra Thom 2 Abstract Harriet Pearson, MA Painting Conservation, and Alexandra Thom, MA History of Art, conducted the following study while employed by The Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum from January to July 2011. Job and His Comforters , the painting undergoing consideration, entered the The Courtauld Gallery collection as part of the Lee Bequest, at which point the work was titled The Scorn of Job . It is currently in the painting store and has not been displayed since its acquisition. This report aims to contextualize Job and His Comforters , both through its material history and iconography, in mid 16 th century Netherlandish practice. At the outset, the authors will introduce the narrative of Job—as it was developed in the biblical Book of Job and in various secular sources—and its specific interpretation in the panel painting. We will then discuss the probable place and time of production, and how this particular historical and cultural context might have played a role in deciding the painting’s dramatic content, composition, style, and iconography. Finally, the authors will compare certain elements of the painting—its composition and content—with contemporary Netherlandish paintings in an effort to situate Job and His Comforters in a tradition of Northern European panel painting. This report is the product of a collaborative effort between The Courtauld Gallery, The Courtauld Institute of Art, and the Department of Conservation & Technology, and its findings reflect those accrued from both art historical examination and technical practice.

Ambrosius Benson and Studio, The Adoration of the Shepherds oil on panel 35 ¾ by 31 inches (91 by 78.8cm.) provenance: With Paul Cassirer Gallery, Berlin, 1922 (according to Marlier); Acquired by Raul Edwards Mac-Clure Esq., during the early part of the 20th century; Thence by direct descent to his daughter Mrs. Carmen Edwards de Ferrari; Thence by descent to her nephew, until sold, (“Property from a Private Collection”), London, Sotheby’s July 7, 2005, lot 110, for £70,000; Private collection, United Kingdom literature: G. Marlier, Ambrosius Benson et la peinture à Bruges au temps de Charles- Quint, Damme 1957, p. 287, no. 22 (as Ambrosius Benson and Studio). note: Though Ambrosius Benson is considered a southern Netherlandish painter, he was actually born in Italy, most likely Lombardy in the late 15th century.1 In 1518 he acquired Bruges citizenship, and in 1519 he was admitted to the guild of painters and saddle makers there as an independent master, with the comment that he was ‘from Lombardy’. He may have been from Ferrara, although he was originally called Ambrogio Benzone, taking his first name from the patron saint of Milan, the capital of Lombardy. He was probably attracted to Bruges by its commercial and artistic reputation. Initially he worked in the studio of Gerard David, by whom he was profoundly influenced, but after a few months the relationship went wrong and the younger painter brought a case against David. Benson’s first marriage was to Anna Ghyselin, who bore him two sons, Willem Benson (1521/2-1574) and Jan Benson (before 1530 – before 1581), both of whom became artists.
