1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in the Guardian, June 2007
1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in The Guardian, June 2007 http://film.guardian.co.uk/1000films/0,,2108487,00.html Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) Prescient satire on news manipulation, with Kirk Douglas as a washed-up hack making the most of a story that falls into his lap. One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation. -

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF THE GREEN MOVEMENT: THE THREE STOOGES AS EARLY ENVIRONMENTALISTS RONALD J. RYCHLAK* Aristotle's Rhetoric,' written 2400 years ago, explained that there are three important aspects to any persuasive presentation. He called them the logos, the ethos, and the pathos. The logos is the logic or reason of the argument. The ethos is the character or integrity of the speaker. The pathos is the emotional content of the presentation.' In attempting to make persuasive arguments in court, lawyers are well aware of the need to draw upon all of these components of persuasion. Arguments are always structured to at least appear logical; lawyers jealously guard their credibility; and emotional appeals are common. We most often think of the emotion of sympathy, but effective advocates use anxiety, love, fear, excitement, joy, tension, anger, and even humor to be persuasive.3 Like lawyers in court, judges use emotions, including humor, to make points in their opinions Similarly, law professors often strive for humor in the classroom. -

Bob, Little Jim, Bluebottle, and the Three Stooges Stephen
Postgraduate Journal of Aesthetics, Vol. 5, No. 1, April 2008 BOB , LITTLE JIM , BLUEBOTTLE , AND THE THREE STOOGES STEPHEN DAVIES UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND Bob Solomon enjoyed humor, a good laugh. He was not a teller and collector of jokes or of humorous stories, as Ted Cohen and Noël Carroll are. He did not cultivate clever witticisms. Rather, his interest was in viewing life’s contingency and absurdity for the humor that can be found there, and the target of this humor was as likely to be himself or his friends as it was to be strangers. Bob also displayed philosophical courage. He once argued before an incredulous audience of philosophers that the Three Stooges are funny, and admitted unashamedly to being a life-long devotee. In the published version of that talk 1 he observes: “few adults in their chosen professions would dare attempt a Stooges gesture at risk of being terminally dismissed, but most men carry the secret knowledge around with them, and, in a wild fit of catharsis, display a tell-tale Stooges gesture when the door closes and the boss is out of view. I only hesitate to suggest that it is one of the most basic bonds between men, and perhaps the fact that it mystifies and sometimes horrifies women is far more elemental than the mere phrase ‘a sense of humor’ could ever suggest” 2,3 The Stooges, Bob goes on to argue, provide a challenge for the prevailing theories of humor. Of course, the point of this reductio is to demonstrate that these theories are inadequate to capture the comedy of the Stooges, not to show the Stooges aren’t genuinely funny. -
Ireland-Delfs Thesis V
Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Viking and Medieval Norse Studies Punching Up – Punching Down: Humor as a Tool of Subversion in the Íslendingasögur Ritgerð til MA-prófs í Viking and Medieval Norse Studies Thomas Ireland-Delfs Kt.: 211050-2179 Leiðbeinandi: Ármann Jakobsson Maí 2020 Many thanks to the following: Marion Poilvez for the idea Yoav Tirosh for the inspiration Ármann Jakobsson for the advice Haraldur Bernharðsson & VMNS for the opportunity And, always, Orilee for the support and love © 2020 Thomas Ireland-Delfs All rights reserved Abstract Humor is, without question, an intrinsic part of the þættir and sagas of medieval Iceland. Many of the sagas and þættir have humorous moments, ranging from physical humor to ironic comments to insulting verses. The humorous incidents that are chosen by the authors of the sagas and þættir reflect both the authors’ purposes in writing the sagas and the internal condition of the characters. They may also give a clue to the state of mind of the societies in which they take place and in which they were written. This paper proposes that humorous incidents in the sagas are not random; they serve a variety of purposes. Among the purposes these incidents serve is the subversion of people’s intentions and reputations, and of corrupt institutions. Such criticism is sharpened by the use of humor. By looking at the sagas and þættir through the lens of the Aggression Theory of Humor, posed by Igor Krichtafovich, which is comprised of Superiority Theory, as explained by John Morreall; and Inferiority Theory, proposed by Robert Solomon, we can understand how the humor of the sagas and þættir can be viewed as a subversive tool. -
