    Vol. 13 :: No. 3 :: Jul – Sep 2018 Message from the Chairman Dear IEEE Members, I am happy to write to you in this penultimate issue of IEEE ICNL for 2018. At the very outset, I would like to state that my experience during 2017-2018 as IC Chair has indicated that if IEEE India fraternity works in unison, many positive things can happen in the years to come. IEEE India Council is delighted to state that the "All India Student/ YP/ WIE Congress (AISYWC- 18)”, a flagship event of IEEE IC, was hosted by IEEE Bangalore Section with great pomp and show during 28th to 30th September 2018. This year, the congress was held at City of Palaces, Mysuru, and the local host was Vidya Vikas Institute of Engineering & Technology (VVIET). IEEE India Council is happy to inform that seven IEEE Sections of India extended their support to AISYWC-18. Around 450 participants took part in the Congress. Maintaining the continuity during 2017-2018, IEEE IC F2F meeting was held on 30th September 2018 hosted by IEEE Bangalore Section on the sidelines of AISYWC-18 in Mysuru. It was a very good meeting with participation from many sections, which is bringing in greater cohesion in IEEE activities in India. I put on record our utmost appreciation of the efforts of IEEE Bangalore Section in relation to this F2F meeting. This quarter was an eventful time for IEEE India Council. IEEE Bombay Section in collaboration with IEEE India Council organized a day-and-a-half long ‘Tutorial cum workshop on AI&ML’ during August 10-11, 2018.

    TCE Alumni Newsletter Know your Alumni Padma Shri, Shri NAGARAJAN VEDACHALAM ● Padma Shri, Shri NAGARAJAN VEDACHALAM was born on 28​th October 1942 at Madurai, educated at Capron Hall, Sethupathi High School and Madurai College, prior to his Engineering education at ​Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai (1964 batch). ● He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering Degree from the University of Madras in 1964. ● Before joining the Indian Space Research Organisation in 1969, he worked for four years in ​Defence Research & Development Laboratory, Hyderabad​, specializing in the development of an ​Anti Tank Missile Gyroscope​. ● He joined ​ISRO in July 1969 as Scientist/Engineer at Space Science & Technology Centre, Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram. ● In a career spanning over 34 years in Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Shri Vedachalam had held several important positions like Group Director, Navigation Guidance Control Group, Programme Director, Inertial Systems Laboratory and Director, ISRO Inertial Systems Unit at Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. S. Nambi Narayanan ● S. Nambi Narayanan (12 December 1941) is an ​Indian scientist and aerospace engineer and ​Padma Bhushan​ award winner. ● We are very proud to say that he is the alumnus of ​Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai. ● He completed his BE in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1965. 2 ● As a senior official at the ​Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), he was in-charge of the ​cryogenics​ division. ● Narayanan introduced the liquid fuel rocket technology in India in the early 1970s, when ​A. Sited about 17 km downstream of Dibrugarh town, the 4.94km bridge will facilitate road and rail connectivity between the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra in the eastern part of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The bridge is 32m above the water level of the Brahmaputra and is fashioned on a bridge that links Sweden and Denmark. It has three lane roads on top and double line rail below. Upon completion, Bogibeel will be the longest rail-cum-road bridge in India and 2nd longest bridge over the Brahmaputra after Dhola-Sadiya Bridge which is a road bridge of length 9.15 km. Bimal Jalan is the head of the committee to select new Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) The Government of India (GoI) has constituted a committee, headed by former Reserve Bank of India governor Bimal Jalan, to select the next Chief Economic Advisor (CEA). Before joining the Indian Space Research Organization in 1969, he worked in Defense Research & Development Laboratory, Hyderabad, for four years, specializing in the development of an Anti Tank Missile Gyroscope. In a career spanning over 34 years in Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Shri Vedachalam had held several important positions like Group Director, Navigation Guidance Control Group, Programme Director, Inertial Systems Laboratory and Director, ISRO Inertial Systems Unit at Thiruvananthapuram. Shri S. Nambi Narayanan (1965- Mech) Shri S. Nambi Narayanan was conferred Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India in the year 2019 for his work in the field of Science and Engineering. He completed his BE Mechanical Engineering in TCE in the year 1965. He was a Scientist in Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). As a senior official at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) he was in-charge of the cryogenics division. He was instrumental in developing the Vikas Engine that was used in the first PSLV that India launched. Padma Bhushan Nambi Narayanan introduced the liquid fuel rocket technology in India in the early 1970s, when A. P. J. Abdul Kalam's team was working on solid motors. To say the least, the delineation by the Division Bench is too simplistic. 2. The exposé of facts very succinctly put is that on 20.01.1994, Crime No.225/94 was registered at Vanchiyoor Police Station against 2 one Mariam Rasheeda, a Maldivian National, under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946 and paragraph 7 of the Foreigners Order. The investigation of the case was conducted by one S. Vijayan, the respondent no. 6 herein, who was the then Inspector, Special Branch, Thiruvananthapuram. 3. Mariam Rasheeda was arrested and sent to judicial custody on 21.10.1994. Her custody was obtained by the Police on 03.11.1994 and she was interrogated by Kerala Police and Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials. Allegedly, during interrogation, she made certain ‘confessions’ which led to the registration of Crime No. 246/1994, Vanchiyoor Police Station on 13.11.1994 under Sections 3 and 4 of the Indian Official Secrets Acts, 1923, alleging that certain official secrets and documents of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had been leaked out by scientists of ISRO.
