  • Tiger Times SPECIAL EDITION July / August 2020
SWIMMER’S NEWSLETTER FOR PRINCETON TIGER AQUATICS CLUB Tigers are Back in the Pool! by: Aditi Pavuluri It’s been a strange past few months for swimmers across the country, and one of the few times in history where there have been no competitions or practice taking place. The Olympics were postponed for the first time ever, and competitive swimmers across the globe are wondering when they can start competing again. As of two weeks ago, swimmers have taken to the pool for the first time in months. To pass the time, they’ve been working out over Zoom, and doing as much work as they could while still socially distanced. By working on technique, starts, turns, and speed, the Tigers have been trying to get in as much swimming as they can to make up for lost time. It will be a fresh start for us, and a way to start using muscles that haven’t been awoken in months. And though we’ve been staying in shape, we might not necessarily have been staying in swimming shape. Getting back into the pool is something that every swimmer is having to experience, and know that we’re in this together. So right now is the perfect time to improve on something that you’ve been holding off on during competition season. Our perspective might have to change from “getting back to where we came from” to “how far we can go”. Take advantage of this new and unusual time to better yourself as a swimmer. Go Tigers! SWIMMER’S NEWSLETTER FOR PRINCETON TIGER AQUATICS CLUB Monthly Motivation Ready for Normal.

You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.

Agenda Item #3 MEMO To: Mike Riggle Fr: Jenn Nimke Re: Students and Staff Who Excel Date: January, 14 2013 At the meeting on January 14, 2013, we will honor the GBS girls swimming and diving team of Amanda Browder, Bailey Moynihan, Katie Iida, Sarah Grieve, Niki Wells, Kelly Cordes, Kimmy Durkin, Katie Wells and Olivia Smoliga for their 4th place finish during the state meet the weekend of November 16-18. Smoliga became the first American girls' high school swimmer ever to swim under 22 seconds in the 50 freestyle, and her time of 21.99 was not only a new IHSA state record but also a national record. Her state championship swim in the 100 backstroke also set a new state and national record with a time of 51.43. The GBS 200 freestyle relay team of Smoliga, Moynihan, Niki Wells, and Katie Wells earned a 1st place state medal and also set a new IHSA state record with a time of 1:32.98. THE TSM MONTHLY POST TSM SERVING THE SANTA MONICA BAY AREA SINCE 1955 The Official Team Santa Monica Swim Club e-Newsletter February 2016 TEAM SANTA MONICA INJURY PREVENTION High performance in any sport carries a degree of risk. Some sports more than others but even the low impact sports like swimming need a strategy to limit and/or deal with potential or actual injury. The most common injury or complaint in swimming is shoulder pain. Shoulder function is highly dependent on the coordinated function of many muscle groups. These include the muscles around the shoulder, those that control the scapula or shoulder blade, muscles in the upper and lower back, as well as abdominal and pelvic muscles. Since the shoulder is an inherently unstable joint, muscle forces are critical for maintaining stability, proper motion, and painless function. The repetitive overhead activity of the swimming stroke can result in fatigue of these muscles. This in turn can lead to distinct changes in the function of the shoulder, resulting in the pain that is commonly known as “swimmer’s shoulder.” One of the major factors causing shoulder pain is overuse and subsequent fatigue of the rotator cuff muscles, scapular muscles, and muscles of the upper and lower back. Consequently, this fatigue can lead to shoulder instability and predispose a swimmer to shoulder pain. The risk of injury and pain is especially true for swimmers who swim with poor technique. It is well established that a comprehensive program to develop strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility of the muscles is the most important way to prevent “swimmer’s shoulder".
