VOL. 46 NO.1 JANUARY 6, 2006 Academy Airmen gear up for deployment By Butch Wehry Academy Spirit staff

The medical group has been plan- ning for months to ease the impact of departing medical providers with contracted providers and Reservists, said Col. Christian Benjamin (Dr.), family practice and aerospace medicine commander. “The goal is to avoid any decrease in access to care,” said the Academy doctor who claims Novato, Calif., as home. “If all goes well, our beneficia- ries will not notice a big change, but we do ask [them] to be patient as we go through this.” The work will be a mixture of surgical and resucitative care for those who sustain traumatic injury in their proximity, and primary care for personnel stationed in their area, he said.

“The approach to surgery is Photo by John Van Winkle different,” said Colonel Benjamin. “At some deployed locations the emphasis I’ll be baaack! will be on saving life and limb with emergency procedures, while more definitive procedures are often done DeBerry stays, fine tunes staff later at Landstuhl, Wilford Hall or Walter Reed [medical facilities]. Cadets perform at Rose Bowl pre-gam

By the Academy Public Affairs

Eight Air Force Academy cadets performed in front of a national audience Wednesday at the Rose Bowl pre- game show. Cadets 1st Class Lindsey Bergeron and James Wentzel, Cadets 2nd Class Derek Bell, Monica Herrera and Jon Lohse, and Cadets 3rd Class Liz BuPane, Preston Gartner and Whitney Salo performed as part of the Academy Singers, an a cappella group from the cadet chorale. The group sang a two-minute medley of “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless America” to close the pre-game festivites. The Academy Singers is composed of men and women from all four cadet classes who represent the Academy through a cappella singing. The Academy Singers was formed in August 2000 to support the many performance requests received annually, in addition to providing an outlet for a cappella singing to outstanding cadet vocalists. Once a cadet auditions for and becomes a member of the larger Cadet Chorale, each cadet may indicate an interest in the Academy Singers, and must undergo a second audition for membership in the premiere ensem- ble.
